Mountain Biking - Slash resistant tires?

So, I've blown two tires in the last 10 rides. That's full-blown 2-3 inch gashes in each. Both rear tires. They were both WTB Motoraptors that came with my bike. I think they're the race version with kevlar beads. They were 2.14's if that matters. http://www.wtb.com/tires_motoraptor.html Both of the cuts seemed to originate in the sidewall and move up into the tread blocks a ways, resulting in instant blowouts.

Here's the problem. My favorite trail goes through an area that Native Americans used to quarry flint out of for their arrowheads as far back as 12,000 B.C. That should tell you something about how hard and sharp the rock is. It's all chert (flint). I obvously need a tire with a thicker, more cut resistant sidewall. I also wouldn't mind going up in size a bit. I need all the help I can get when the climbs get loose and manky. Maybe a 2.25 or 2.3. I think 2.3 is about the max that will fit.

Anyone have any ideas on something that won't blow out every 5 rides? Cost isn't super important as long as they hold up well. The terrain I normally ride is smooth, fast single-track in places and slow, pedal pounding, rock bashing in other places. The knobby moto's seem to hook up ok, so a knobby design with more cut protection is probably what I'm looking for. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Anyone have any experience with the WTB Weirwolf in "Team" trim? It comes with their "Inner Peace" sidewall that they claim has a stiffersidewall for good handling at lower pressure and is less prone to damage.

Pinch flats aren't my problem. I'm getting 2-3" gashes in my sidewalls. I'm not thinking Stan's, Slime, or anything like that will help once the tire integrity has been destroyed. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Any maxxis tyres, Slime tube protectors, and mega dh tube or something.

Continental make tires with slash-resistant weave on the outside of the tire for this reason.

I checked out the Maxxis and Conti tires. The freeride Maxxis Minon's looked good, but they're only available in single ply. The DH Minions are 3-ply, but the smallest size is 2.5, which is too wide for my frame.

The Conti Slash looks good. I'm not too keen on the tread pattern, but the construction looks like what I'm looking for. Size and weight are good too. Anyone have any experience with these?

Any other suggestions? I can get good pricing on most tires, but not Specialized. I'm tempted to look at them too b/c of their Armadillo armor. Anyone using these?

One other word - if you want to fit flataways opranythign like to the Contis - you have to wash the wax off the inside of them first. Conti reccomend brake cleaner or gasoline, but a scrubbing brush and detergent will work, too. Just not too hard....

Yes, thanks. I'm looking at a couple others as well. Do you know why the Pro Tection tires would be lighter than the standard models of the same dimensions? I find it odd that the weight of the standard Vertical is 730grams and the weight of the Pro Tection model is 630 grams. Light tires are a plus, but 630 seems light for 2.3" tires. I'm just wondering which one is more durable.

Sidewalls are built diffeerntly - with that external kevlar lattice representing an identical section at those points where the kevlar is, but the gaps in the lattice are thinner.
Second, kevlar beads.
Third, the carcass I am told is laid up differently and uses a different TPi for ProTection from normal....

Those look real nice. Damn heavy, but real nice. Not sure if I can fit a 2.35 back there. Guess I'll have to measure. Anyone know if they run close to specified width? I know some manufacturers post widths that aren't exactly accurate.

they aint light, but they are by far the best tire Ive ever run and dont ride like heavy tires . I TRY to make them tear or pinch flat and cant do it. even at 18psi and Im 200# they dont flat or tear. the only tire Ive ever not torn in the mountains of western Va.
