Hey guys, my husband and I went into a small town bike shop and the guy was building up a trek 300. Silver in color with lugs on it. He said he thought it was from the 80's but didn't know when. The frame only has one scratch, no dents or dings or rust. What would something like this be worth? I thought it might be an interesting project for my husband and I to try and rebuild. It is actually a complete bike but the components and tires and rims are not original on it. Any guesses as to what it might be worth being we are thinking about buying it? Thanks for any info :)

The Trek 300 was made in 1985. Mine rides pretty nice, but I probably wouldn't spend over fifty dollars on one. I got mine for $30 at a pawn shop, and have been slowly replacing the original components with 600 Ultegra.

In NYC, any vintage, lugged 80s Trek goes for a minimum of $125, usually $150 and up. In a discerning, vintage-loving but vintage-ignorant market, they're much-prized, even the lower-end models, I think basically because of the brand/quality recognition. Course, just about any 80s bike with alloy wheels sells for $100 here.

Wow thanks everyone! I just thought it was a pretty cool looking bike and it seems to be in really good shape for it's age. I think I will make him an offer on it and go from there. Thanks again!

Madison must not be adiscerning, vintage loving market

I got my daughter's '83 Trek 400 for $25
She rides it as a single now
and it has turned her into a bike mechanic

Well, weren't the original treks built in WI? I'd guess you have a lot more per capita out there. And I didn't mean "discerning" up there; more like "vintage loving but undiscerning." Even vintage Rosses, Royce Unions and St. Tropezzz will get you money here. But that makes the Treks far pricier. Madison would be great if not for that little thing called winter :D.

Madison
42°30'N to 47°3'N

New York
40°47' N

Well Madison is further north... by degrees
Really, Winter ain't too bad here. We are even with Milwaukee and just a shade north of Chicago... which is downright balmy
Duluth? The Twin Cities? International Falls, Min? now you are talking winter
Madison is basically southern Wi

Yeah, proximity to Waterloo, the Trek headquarters is something, but not much goes on there any more except admin stuff. Great Bike town, tho (Mad-Town) Miles and miles of paths and bike lanes.
