I backpack a lot so I have a lot of lexan nalgene bottles that I use for everything. I find them really convenient so I was hoping there was a way I could take them with me on the bike. The problem is that they're pretty wide. I don't have one with me to measure, but I'd guess that they're about 4'' in diameter. Are there any cages designed to take such a wide bottle? Any better way to carry them? Thanks!

I have an adjustable bottle holder. It's got a rubber strap that you can strap around anything from a glasses case to a 1 liter bottle, and I usually ride with a big 1 liter nalgene in that and a smaller nalgene in my regular cage.
I think I got it on ebay but I can't find it there now. I'll snap a pic for you if you want.

I can't find it anywhere online... Guess I'm glad I got it when I did. It's a nifty thing.
Anyway here is a picture of it in action, you can kinda make it out with the big red nalgene in it

Those adjustable holders are sold at wal-mart and k-mart for about $7.
Nalgene sells a lexan bottle that will fit a bike water bottle cage, but it has a cap that need two hands to open easily. I am not sure about opening it one handed while riding.

actually I have that OTG bottle, it's pretty easy to use one-handed while riding. I worry that I'm gonna break that plastic cap though... They shoulda made it out of metal or something.
The OTG bottle is wonderful, and it's all I use at the moment. It's the easiest bottle to drink from when I want a lot of water. I have no trouble working it one handed, in fact i think it's easier that the regular kind. I use a standard metal cage with it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll give them a shot. I have been looking for a water bottle that didn't taste like plastic.
One thing that hasn't given me a problem but I have heard reported is that if you pack them upside down they may leak. There is a saft seal that presses onto the spout and maybe it leaks, but it isn't a problem in normal bike storage. Should only be an issue if store upside down in a bag.
To use i just put my index findger through the hole lift it up and when I want some water, I rotate the lid with my thumb, I'm sure it would be obvious to anyone who tried it. The spout is the size of a cigar tube so the water flows with ease. Unfortunately kids want to borrow them and then they loose them...
You can flip the top open with one hand for easy drinking, on the go. But, this easy, one-handed access means the OTG can't be 100% leakproof. Yeah, we know, you have come to expect everything from Nalgene to be 100% leakproof. In order to bring you this hybrid bottle that combines the attributes of a standard bike bottle (easy access to your liquids) and our original PC bottle (indestructible, taste & odor free) we were tasked with designing an easy to open lid. So, what we're saying is enjoy the indestructible quality of the bottle, enjoy your liquids without the "dreaded" plastic taste & smell, enjoy the fact that this quality bottle was manufactured in the USA, but don't put it upside down in your backpack.
Yup definitely not leakproof.
You might also want to check out the bottle called 'Elite Higene' that claims not to leech plastic in the water and inhibit bacteria.

I love my OTG. I am going to get two more eventually, one for each of three cages. Works great one handed. Yes, you can drink half the bottle at one stoplight because of the wide spout. I have actually had it full in the cage with the bike hanging upside down all weekend without it leaking. I wouldn't try putting it in a backpack upside down, though.

I got a similar one but with a dome-shaped guard on the spout to keep the muck out!

If you are touring with panniers, Nalgenes go perfectly in those back pockets on your read panniers. Then put long bike bottles on the down tube. 2 Nalgenes plus 2 long bottles is about 1 gallon - enough for most areas (except the most remote parts of Nevada).
