Introductions - London England

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

New member from the wet side of the Atlantic.
3 bikes at the moment, Cannondale R1000 for sunny weekends, Dawes tourer for commuting on battered London streets and a Marin hardtail for muddy fun.
My wife can't understand why I need another bike but a singlespeed is next on the list. Great new idea in the Uk is that you can get your employer to buy you a bike "for commuting" and then pay for out of salary before tax. Save loads.
next trip? To France next summer with a bunch of mates to ride some of the Tour cols. Seems a good idea now, might not then.

Welcome Paul. I too suffer from multiple bike sydrome. I'm afraid it is incurable. Drop in at the Commuting forum and visit with the rest of us commuters. I wish we had a before tax deduction for bike commuting here, no luck so far. Once again, welcome, and enjoy.

Welcome aboard Paul. I'm a commuter/day tourer myself. My job pays me $25 US to ride my bike to work every month. You'll find a wealth of information here at BF, (bike forums). Your France trip with mates sounds good.

Welcome Paul. You know the other Paul? Swift Paul as we like to call him. He's a radio presenter for the BBC. We've known him a long time now and he's been a huge contributor despite having just joined a couple mins. ago.
Check out the SS/FG forum. Lots of good info buried under the jocularity.

I borrowed my daughter's bike when I was in London last month, and found the drivers most considerate to cyclists - even the bus and taxi drivers.

considerate bus and taxi drivers? Not in my part of London, its pretty much a dogfight for road space most mornings.

I didnt ride in rush hour. I went from the north side of Bromley to Greenwich, without a map. On a couple of occasions taxi drivers told me where to go - and it wasnt "get on the pavement." Narrow congested streets are a pain for both cyclists and motorists. I didnt like the narrow bike lanes marked in car door zones.

yeah the car door zones are a nightmare, don't you have them your side of the water? car drivers think they can open doors safely as the traffic is a yard away. I ignore them and ride in the road and take my chances that way

Bike paths here are usually separated from the roadways, but sometimes they are down one side of the road (bikes in both directions) with no parking on that side. I have seen door zone bike lanes in the US of A.
