My 10 year old son won a trek 4900 mountain bike last year at a race raffle. It's a great little bike for him but the Judy C shock is very stiff. He barely weighs 100 lbs. Is there a way to "loosen" the shock a bit. I was told the elastomer in it was the softest they had as it's spec'd as a womens bike.

Thanks,
Jerry

The dial on top of the fork leg is the adjuster. If you turn it clockwise, it will increase the tension; Counterclockwise will loosen it and decrease the tension making the fork less stiff. Check out this link and you can find a manual on your fork if you don't have one.

Thanks. I have backed off the pre load as much as possible but it's still quite stiff. Much stiffer than the entry level shock I have on my old Kona lava dome, probably a 96 or 97 model.

"SPRING: NEW! Dual Stage coil/elastomer spring
Adj: Preload"

If it is an 03, looks like you will need to get a ride kit for your sons weight. Most shocks if it is setup with springs or elastomer stuff comes setup for middle weight people (160ish).

With air shocks you would only need to pump up the shock to the specific weight of the rider.
