So, my superior hires this little 19yr. old ratbag kid to help me for awhile. Well, this kid is absolutely useless. He won't shut up, he has no initiave whatsoever. I feel like I have to run after him all the time, it's like he constantly needs me to f*****' yell at him to keep him going! He couldn't care less if he's here, cuz he lives with his mommy 'n daddy. I don't know if this is karma coming back to bite me in the ass for how I acted 10 years ago, but man, I could literally throw this kid off a bridge.

LOL

When I was about 28 or 29, I had an intern hired to work with me as well at my old job. I think I could describe him about the exact same way.

He was hilarious......he was going for the degree that I had just completed. Yes, still he thought he knew 10x more than me about the field and would constantly bring up topics just to debate them with me because he thought he knew better. It was freakin' hysterical because he was clueless on most of the subjects.

My favorite was this: All semester long he had seen me carrying around my "Algorithms" book and studying it in spare time (I was in 2nd semester of grad school for same degree). He was always calling himself names like "Programming guru" and "Software Engineer Extraordinaire" and such. Well....finally at the end of the semester, Mr. "Software Engineer Extraordinaire" asks me "So what is an algorithm anyway....is it kind of like a logarithm? You must be stupid to have to have an entire class for that.". And NO he wasn't joking.

Just today I gave up my job title of crew cheif and went back to the next lowest job just to get away from having to babysit grow men on the job. Some of these people are so lazy it pathetic. The stress wasnt worth the extra money to me.

I was in a similar situation a long time ago. The woman wasn't lazy; she just had the intellect of a dead flashlight battery and was industriously incompetent. I also learnt from a friend who worked for her former employer that she was asked to resign, tantamount to being fired.

My boss refused to fire her. She insisted on giving her lots of chances and didn't seem concerned that a lot of others' time was devoted to controlling the damage from her output. When my boss discovered I was negotiating for another job, she gave me a promotion and a 21% salary increase to induce me to stay, which I did.

After I left that company, I learnt the reason my boss would not fire incompetent employee was that she was having an affair with the owner of the employment agency through which this employee was hired. I was paying for my boss's #@$%! stud service by putting up with this nuisance!

I imagine it's a lot like being a babysitter for the "special" group at the kindergarden...

I read this really interesting article about how the younger generation has been coddled by parents and schools and they expect to be coddled at work. It's a social experience for them. While I don't think this bears out across the board, I have seen people who could be poster children for the article. Co-worker here.....I can't tell you how many times he told our bosses we had nothing to do when it was simply a matter of him not having anything he wanted to do. It's annoying. Slap the kid and slap him hard. :p

What you do w/ people w/ a sense of entitlement is you give their job to an eager, hard-working illegal immigrant. Afterall, "illegal" is just something da Man came up with to keep everyone else down.

i once worked for this really weird office (entertainment industry). We shared an office with a woman who is a successful talent agent, but she had her ****** son working for her. The guy was utterly useless. He would sit and look at porn sites all day on his computer, and then act all irritated if someone actually called him or asked him to do actual WORK. He also did a lot of cocaine, would sit there sniffling and jiggling, clicking his pen- he was revolting. He wore the same dirty clothes every day, sit at his computer eating spaghetti and looking at photos of nude teenagers or reading porn chatrooms. Often he'd refuse to answer the phone and let voice mail get it.

His mother was aware of it, but she obviously hired him because he'd otherwise never be able to find a job. She was in total denial. She also began to lose clients because people stopped wanting to deal with her loser son. I didn't work there very long anyways, it was a temp assignment. The woman I worked for was quite insane too. Boy was i glad to get out of there.

He may be a handful, but he will mellow out over time, and start doing his work.

Problem is the illegal has a sense of entitlement as well, since they aren't supposed to be here in the first place.

If the person reufses to work, replace them....if they are just difficult, they will mellow down after a while, if not fire them. Sometimes a person needs to be fired, it does wonders for humbling some folks.

I'm lucky. I would quite possibly have been the same had it not been for my first construction job. I had a boss who screamed at me and all the other workers like it was marine boot camp 100% of the time we we're working. Nothing is a surer fix for lazyness in a young person than getting screamed at and belittled constantly. It builds character.

Well, the thing is, I don't have the authority to fire him. I could go to my boss and say what an idiot he is. Worst case scenario is that I could make him decide: this kid, or me? I know he would probably tell the kid to go take a hike, because I'm very good at what I do, I know the operating system , I work efficiently, and plus, no one else would be able to decipher any of the crap that's on my desk or computer anyways :) Plus, I wouldn't want to do that, that's low. I think i'll just keep on him, not really negative or anything, but see where it goes. No improvement in 2 weeks? I'll recommend that he's gone. Some of us actually have lives & bills to pay..;)
