General Cycling Discussion - Shuttle bike Kit (water bike), this is too cool!!!!

First you start with this:

What looks like a regular backpack. After about 10 minutes, you end up with this:

WOAH! That's pretty cool!

It's called the shuttle bike (http://www.shuttlebike.com/) and it's basically a portable kit that converts your regular road bike into a water bike. It's made in Italy and except for the homepage which doesn't have that much info, I can't much info on it like pricing, importers etc.

Visit their website and check the videos. It looks like a pretty stable and reasonably quick personal watercraft.

Of course the best part is that it's portable. So you could bike from your home to the beach and then use the same bike to have some fun on the water. And you can probably use most bikes on this thing as well. So if you don't want to get that expensive bike to get wet, you can probably find an old junker that'll do.

And obviously eBikers like myself can probably give it a try too.

As a fan of watercraft and bikes, I'm really loving this thing. :D

Could be used in kinetic konveyance races. The site said 10 minutes to set up. I can do that with my folding kayak. But then I have to paddle instead of pedal. However I can also carry two other adults.

The thing looks top-heavy thus prone to flip over.

Did you check their website? They have a video of a stability test. Seems to be stable enough. At least as stable as any kayak or canoe. Probably more from the looks of the video.

Can you store your folding kayak in a backpack and bike it to the beach?

More than just a bike on water, it's the whole backpack thing that's really appealing to me.

Looks pretty stable to me too, but I noticed it was a lot of forward and backward motion that showed the stability, and not a lot of side to side... I think it would be worth a try!

This is pretty funny. While looking up cycling items today, I came across a side for bicycle pontoons. Unlike this kit, these were two foam pontoons that folded up along each side of the bike. Pull a pin, the pontoons drop, insert the pin to lock them in place, and then hit the water.

Ok Ive seen this is an old thread but:

I can't find ANYWHERE to buy these things apart from an Austrailian website that seems to list the price of a Shuttle Bike @ $1495 AUS which equals about £700 - they must be cheaper than that tho.

I've emailed Shuttle Bike US and also direct to the Italian company who makes them today so will post back here any replys I get.

The Pedal Paddle basic model is listed on thier website at $500+p&p so about £300 to the UK i guess but I really like the look of the Shuttle Bikes portability and looks more fun tbh.

Has anyone had a go on/own one of these?

I am down in the Charleston,SC area (at the moment) Someone around here has one of the Shuttle Bikes. We saw it a couple of weeks ago when we were out fishing. It was too far away to really get a good look at it, but it was trucking right along and the guy pedaling was wearing a life vest:thumb:...but no helmet:rolleyes:

A couple of years ago, there was an article in the local paper about a commuter who used this product to pedal across about a mile's worth of Puget Sound. By doing so, he cut something like 20 miles off of his trip.

This latest design has a disadvantage--you have to take the wheels off. I realize there have to be some differences for the NZ product to be patentable. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see a patent problem affect marketing of this latest product since the Italian version was first to market and probably properly patented to protect their rights internationally. That's certainly nothing new as far as international product development goes.

Disadvantage? A couple of weeks ago we raced the Akwakat against a Shuttlebike and a couple of Hydrobikes and over 23km cleaned up with a 45 minute winning margin. So impressive the Shuttlebike owner has ordered a couple of Akwakats :-)

As for patent infringments - apart from the fact that both kits have inflatable pontoons and are designed to be ridden with a conventional bike, they are in fact nothing alike with totally different propulsion systems, drive assemblies, and frame make up.

The shuttle bike is very stable from all directions, it's wide, making it very difficult to tip. well designed. Probably won't outrun dedicated water craft but they don't fit into a small back packthat you ride away with.
