What is the likelihood that the B sample results are a false negative?

Low given the 100m dash is probably the event in which EPO is the least beneficial in all of sport. That thicker blood from EPO might even be a detriment to a sprinter.

It appears to be a false positive. The A sample would have been negative per the 2005 EPO testing threshold. With the lower positive threshold for 2006 they should expect to get more false positives.

Could of course be something new beneficial to sprinters that tests similar EPO or some masking agent that tests similar to EPO.

There is no justification for an agency that exists to enforce a code of ethics (which is what the anti-doping effort is) to act in an unethical manner themselves. It cheapens and sullies their image and gives an aura of hypocrisy to the whole effort.

Whether Jones (or Landis for that matter) were harmed financially or socially by unauthorized releases of A tests is irrelevant to the issue that the A test results shouldn't be released. If the code an agency works under says something shouldn't be done and they do it anyways it does lessen the overall credibility of the agency and its goals. That is an inescapable conclusion.

To be fair, it does appear that the people at the USADA "get it." If only they weren't so unique.

The EPO test takes 3 days min. She wouldn't have received the results that quick. Besides, she competed in other events later in the summer.

Your use of pronouns is confusing yet you seem to be furthering my argument that withdrawals from events do not necessarily indicate a positive PED test. Any way you approach the issue, the leaker was wrong (for multiple reasons).

Can Dick Pound sink any lower? The sleeziest man in sports, and the sleeziest lawyer in North America wants an investigation. He wants to investigate the UCLA lab to find how why the "B" sample came back clean.

According to Pound, the clearing of Jones was "disturbing". He wants steps taken so that such things will not "happen in the future".

Of course, it is Pound who, before ANY hearing, has said Floyd Landis should stop claiming that he was injected with illegal drugs by Nazi Frogmen, and confess to being a cheater. And, he says Floyd should stop requesting to see the evidence against him.

If Floyd is eventually cleared of the allegations he used drugs, Pound will call for an investigation. Of the people who allow Landis to be found innocent. To make sure "such things do not happen in the future".

It is mind boggling that such a cretin is in charge of cleaning up sports. The first step in eliminating the foul odor that lingers over athletics will be to get rid of that big, stinking pile of cr*%p named Dick Pound.

You are right. Withdrawls do not necessarily indicate a positive PED test. But any unexpected and unexplained withdrawl does indicate a good chance that there is news to be had. Even if it is as boring as a slight muscle pull or a twisted ankle it is enought to make the back pages and alow for speculation on how long a runner will be out of competition.

Of course if it turns out they uncover a positive (or even borderline) drug test they have front page stuff.

Have Dick Pound and EURO ever been seen in the same place together at the same time? These folks are so psycho that any evidence of someone NOT doping is cause for alarm. Dick has made a living of hunting witches, and any time the witches appear to be just regular ole humans, he gets very agitated.

He survives and lives a very comfy semi-celebrity lifestyle hunting the dope-witches. I believe more and more as I look at this play out that although doping is a serious problem and very poorly enforced, that the hyseria of a doper under every bed is overblown. The hysteria is driven by these folks because enforcement is a harder thing to do and if the problem looked smaller and more manageable, he might actually have to do some work, or may be out of a job and could be off the cocktail party circuit. By the looks of him, he has his own addiction that he must continue to feed.

I guess Pound, needs some way of monitoring the effectiveness of his messages and proposed defenses pending against witch hunts.
