Bicycle Mechanics - URGENT - Seat Post moving

Bontrager carbon carbon seat post with the metal saddle plate. The saddle plate is twisting -moving left and right- within the carbon seat post. I cannot see any adjustment to tighten or how the metal plate is attached to the carbon shaft. It appears that maybe the metal saddle plate is just glued into the carbon shaft of the post. I can move it about .25-.50 inches with my hand. This .25-.50 inches is greatly exagerated when the saddle is attached. 2004 Trek 5000 is three years old now. Planning to ride a big ride in the morning...movement started a week ago and I thought it was just tightening a screw...not the case. Anybody know what's happening here? Thanks.

So0unds like the bond between the saddle clamp and the carbon post has come "unglued". I'd contact Bontrager (aka Trek) about a warranty replacement.

"Hope it holds"?! They said that to you? And if it doesn't hold (and it won't), will they hope for a speedy recovery for you while in the hospital? Criminy...

Wow :eek:!! I'd put my foot down and give 'em hell for that. If it's under warranty, they are OBLIGATED to replace it, whether or not it is convenient for them to do so.

Makes me glad that my bikes are made of metal, all the same.

I had a similar issue with Trek in 1992. They would not replace a bad rim nor would they help me in any way. I swore that I would never buy another Trek. Not that they are not good bikes but I do not care to be treated that way. I have bought 10 to 12 bikes since that time but no more Treks for me.

I'll be keeping this in mind as well. I've owned 2 used Treks and been very happy with them. But if that's how they treat customers who pay retail, then forget it.

Write to Trek directly, sometimes the dealer is the problem, especially during the summer cycling season, when they tend to be busy. If the company tells you the same thing, then you have a problem.

Teammate just picked up a brand new Madonne. On the first ride the fork dropouts became unbonded. Luckily we stopped to adjust his front brake and realized it before something dangerous happened. Trek sent him a new bike, but after one week the seatpost became unbonded just like the OP described. C'mon man, Trek needs to stop using Dollar Tree glue sticks to build their bikes. I'll stick with my Klein (a real one, not a Trek produced model).

The bike is three years old. The seatpost is not under warranty so stop hating Trek or the dealer. I would laugh and point my finger at the nut that told you to use gorilla glue though.
