Mountain Biking - New Dirtjumper With some Q's...

Hey all you mountain guys/gals. I just got into this sport and i love it already. Im acctually a unicyclist at heart but Dirtjumping has really gotten to me. I just got home with my new Kona Scrap. Its a beast i love it.

So heres my questions:
1. Are there any other entry level Dirtjumpers out there in the Hamilton Ontario Area?
2. Does any use clipless pedals for DJ riding? What are the pros/cons of clipless?
3. Can i use the new Scrap for light end Downhill or Freeride stuff? And what mods would i have to make so that it could run some DH and still be good for DJ?

i think most of the people who DJ wear like... jeans and skate shoes...
clipless pro... you wont lose your pedals in mid-air?

2.Don't use clipless for DJ, too many bails and too little time to unclip. Use Platforms.
3.Yes. Longer travel fork would help.

2) If you use clipless that limits your tricks and movment in the air. Plus if you have to bail.
3) Try to keep it more and the DJ side. If you make it to DH, then your going to have a heck of a time trying to DJ with it.

I got a nother question...

What kind of padding should i be wearing for DJ? I already plan on wearing: A helmet(duh), 661 4X4 Leg armour, and DH gloves. (This is all stuff i have from DH unicycling). Should i invest in a full face? Ive got a 661 Mullet now.

bmx platforms?

1) not sure i live in california
2) i tried clipless one day and i sprained both my wrists and twisted my ankle from not being able to bail out fast enough, so now i just wear my vans and try to jump with my mallet c's... it works alright i get enough grip with the long spikes. but just dont jump with clipless
3)well you could get a pike like me... i put it down to about 100 or 95mm of travel and then i crank it up more when i actually mountainbike.

I was watching NWD the other day and love to watch the Unicyclist jumping of rails and stuff. Do you do that? How many wheels hat you taco'd?

1. I live in hamilton, but i dont do dirtjumping, i could try though haha, we should go riding sometime...
2.Platforms are much better for dirt jumping, you can't get off the pedals quick enough if you have to bail with clipless.
3. Longer travel fork maybe some thicker tires and a better wheelset.

The mullet is good for DJ, if I am thinking of the right helmet. Shin gaurds are good, but if you look in mags in stuff alot of DJers will only wear a "skid lid". No gloves or shin gaurds, that is how I ride anyways.

YAY, people actually from roughly the same area as me! (Im in ancaster)

1) Yes, dundas has some nice jumps (not exactly beginner though)

3) Yep, Ive seen several people ride a stock Scrap at blue mountain and do fine.

Nice more people from around the same region as me. I was out biking in ancaster today, got a flat tire and had to walk all the way from the trails by the old mill to ancaster cycle. They put a new tube on for free so that was pretty sweet, all i had to pay for was the tube and it only cost 5 bucks..

1)No idea, so I'm guessing yes.
2)clipless and DJ=Huge potential for a snapped ankle.

I'm going into grade 10. I think i might know who you are, you work in Pieriks right. I think i've seen you bring your unicycle to school a few times. You might have seen me in pieriks once or tiwce too.

Yup thats me...You wouldnt think of me as much of a DJer eh? I dont exactly fit the rider "Profile"lol.

I would think of you being more of a downhiller.

I ride trials unicycling and DH unicycling...Ive never tacoed a wheel but ive put mine a hell of a lot outta true on several occasions. Its probly time for some new spokes.
