Bicycle Mechanics - Is my hub toast?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Here it is:

I was told I overtightened it. It looks like it may have been this way a while, though. It's a track hub. That's not rust in the pic, just grease. It seems to me the bearings won't have a nice round place to sit in... If you can't tell, the top left side is kind of flat like there's no metal there rising up at all.
It might be easier to see if you removed the dustcap and cleaned the grease away...

That's what I was thinking too but, if the metal inside of the hub shell really is deformed, I wouldn't waste any more of my time trying to make a useable wheel out of it.

Clean the hub completely and check the condition of the race. If it's pockmarked, deformed or scored, the hub should be discarded. If the race is clean, round and free of damage the hub is usable. We can't tell anything from your photo at this point.
It is deformed, that's the part I was describing as flattened, and you can see it bend over near the bottom. Oh well, I wanted new wheels anyway...
