Fifty Plus (50+) - I was Brutalized!!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I "attempted" the Blue Ridge Brutal 100 yesterday out of West Jefferson, NC and got Brutalized big time!! It was advertised as 12,000 ft of climbing over 100+ miles. I had done this ride the previous two years but they replaced a nice 8 mile flat stretch along the river in the previous years' route with 2 more climbs......
Anyway, I wound up leaving the century route at 71 miles and doing the 76 mile route. Without going into too many details, I severely cramped early into the ride and knew adding 25 more miles of mostly climbing would just be TOO unenjoyable. I'm really upset with myself for not hydrating properly leading up to the ride but in fairness I had the flu earlier in the week.
Anyway, it was a frustrating and very discouraging day but I'm optimistic I can get it turned around soon. I'd better because it doesn't get any easier with another ride called the "Hilly Hellacious" coming up next week. It's 100+ with just as much climbing!!!
Keep your chin up...hills make us strong, wind makes us mean. I pulled out of one yesterday because of snow above 8500 ft, and am damn glad I did. We learn with each one we do...if they were easy they wouldn't mean as much to us after finally completing. Hit the next one as hard as you can...

You probably couldn't have hydrated enough to make up for the debilitating effects of your recent flu. We have to face it: at our age, recovery from illness simply takes longer. I'm amazed you could do that much!
Hit it hard next year.

That's a tough one jppe. chalk it up to a bad day, or since you were recovering from the flu chalk it up to experience. Perhaps you should have skipped it in favor of a simpler century like your Morrow Mtn ride.
Anyway ride some this week and I bet you'll be back in top form for next weekend.

Not glad to see someone else failing- but if it ain't going right- then cut it short. I had a ride planned for today but a few aches and Grumbles from the body made me decide to cut the ride short. There's always next week- or the week after- by which time the weather over here will change and I can get back out on the MTB offroad. Now that will be a reason to cut a ride short. All that mud- the hills with no grip, and the falling off. After a summer on the dark side- I don't know if I want to do that so first ride will definitely get cut short- with no other excuse than I want to go home.

I rode around Lake Tahoe on Saturday. 73 miles and 3330 ft of climbing. I was with a couple of other people and we left the Casino at 7:20 and got back at 1:15.
Nice ride with nice people, great scenary and I didn't have to pretend that the only thing in the world that is important is being able to ride the hardest possible ride in the shortest possible time.
All three of us were riding out C40 Colnagos as well.

Take solice in the fact that your 76mile break off was harder than most people, including me, have ever done. I'm sure next time you will eat that ride up
