OC Roadie and I had spoken in a thread about running the Baldy Challenge again. If you remember, he and I did this ride last year and it ended up being 104 degrees in the village and we could not hit the ski lifts... This is a very challenging ride, but as this is mid October we should not have to deal with the heat or cold and can complete this ride in style.
I'd say that we need to meet at 6:30 AM so we don't need lights (October 14, 2006: 6:52 AM, 6:16 PM, 11:24:01) and we can leave at 7:00 AM.
OC needs to be home by 3PM... so he may bolt on the group to make his deadline, but I think that this ride is going to be tons of fun since we have an official SAG and cooler temperatures that will not sap everyone's strength. 2:30 ending time is not unreasonable....

Cool, I'll mark the date on the calendar, and hope that it stays there:D I vote for the Baldy century, I've been wanting to do that one all year, plus it's closer (sorry San Diego folks:p ). Somewhere I've still got our route slip, I think I have it as an Excel file too. I just remembered I need to donate to your MS ride, good chance to tell everyone else that they should help out too;) Take Care...

He's got too many donations already. You should donate to mine!
Count me in. I reserve the right to back out if backing out allows the group to finish 1+ hours faster (if I'm way slower than everyone else).

It won't be like that:D, well maybe on the climbs:p There will be plenty of regrouping, we were pretty successful of keeping together and regrouping on the Pie Ride, until we started running out of daylight.

No kidding. These guys are already light years faster than me and to top it off, every time I see them I seem to be losing ground on them. .
Despite that, I would have loved to do this ride but I'll be in New Jersey (for work) or Colorado (moving there soon). I'll have to try to find something as equally torturous and scenic (which is highly unlikely :( )and ride w/ you guys in spirit.

which other forum? the cycling.whatever one?
i think we'd still have the traffic here.... it would just be all grouped together and easier to find... plus we still can visit the other areas!!!!
where we would lose traffic... is if we tried to take it completely away from here... to another forum... another url... altogether!

Oh, of course, that's a given. No one is suggesting that...
Extort and/or OC Roadie, would you please comment on how the Baldy challenge compares with the Pie ride? Both by the numbers and subjectively. (No 1000 foot climb at the 100 mile mark this time?) Thanks.
But wasn't that fun, everyone jumping in the sag car for the last climb
But wasn't that fun, everyone jumping in the sag car for the last climb
 It was a fun throughout. But I'm hoping my next century might be a closed loop century.
The Baldy Challenge ride that OC and I did last year started at the 91 and Imperial Highway and worked out way northeast through Carbon Canyon (some people call it a climb , but this early in the day it feels like nothing ;) ) and into Pomona. We continue north to San Dimas and up to Glendora Mountain Road (so everyone that does the ride on Labor Day has a great preview of the challenge :D), taking that to the village and the lifts  . From there we head down Baldy Road to Claremont and lunch with plenty of choices. We finish the ride by dropping back into 'the OC' by way of Brea Canyon.
Total climbing on the day..... somewhere around 10k (OC, ?)
Total Mileage, 103 without the lifts, 111 with...
total exaustion.... in 104 degree heat, YES :o ... this time, we should be fine :) . Remember that this is an all day ride as we will be gone from about 7 to 4... and some people might need lights this far into the year.
We need to think about t-shirts this time! :D

It shouldn't be too hard if I'm in CO and if I'm still working in Jersey then I should be able to get in a nice foliage ride. It's just that I'll miss GRR and Baldy quite a bit.
I'm most likely to the Denver area or perhaps Fort Collins. If any of you you are in Colorado and have a bike, then you can use my place to crash -- seriously. You can load up the VW bus w/ BFers and bikes and take a road trip to Colorado for some great riding.

Yeah, these threads are getting impossible to follow...maybe if we all make sure to pony up for membership, Joe can help us out.

By the numbers: When Extort and I did this, we turned around at the rest stop, just before the Icehouse Canyon bridge, we had 103 miles with 8,000' of climbing. If you go the lifts, figure another 7 miles and 2,000' (you probably know the elevation gain from the bridge, better than I do;) )
Subjectively: The Pie Ride is a nicer ride. The terrain and scenery is better. On the Baldy ride, there's a fair amount of urban riding. The Baldy Ride has some cool sections (Carbon Canyon, San Dimas and the GMR/GRR/Lifts climb, but I don't think it compares to coming down Palomar into Lake Henshaw and then cruising country highway. Also Bandy Canyon is one of my all time favorite areas, so it's hard to top that. As far as difficulty goes, the Baldy Ride is probably a little easier, the numbers are really close, but after the Ski Lifts, it's really just cruising on the way home, nothing like Lake Wohlf*** Rd at mile 90:p This should be a great ride, there's the option of hanging out in the Village and cutting out 2,000' of climbing, but still ending up with 100 miles. I'm really looking forward to this one, it should be a great time:)

I bought my van in Denver! I just might take you up on that sometime. I like CO. I hear there's some good MTBing out there too. Rocky Mtn NP is awesome.
I'm definitely in for this one.
Also Bandy Canyon is one of my all time favorite areas, so it's hard to top that.
True...but given that Highland Valley/ Bandy Canyon is by a good margin the best stretch of road within 40 mi of my place, I'll be happy to see somewhere else. Pretty much every longer ride of mine passes through there...
Guess I've never done that side of Wohlford so far into a ride...but is it really that bad? It's a somewhat ugly climb with usually heavy traffic (drunk casino traffic no less) and no shoulder..but not too long or steep. I would think the Baldy ride is significantly harder. We'll see =).
After 90 miles and 9500 feet of climbing... Lake Wohlford is fairly mean (not difficult, just mean).
It is like my double last year in Death Valley, mile 170 I looked at the route slip and saw that the next rest stop was at mile 177... and that hill up to Hell's Gate nearly exploded my heart!
* BUMP! *
Anyone else interested? This will be a fun ride. :D

That's a big ride... but I'm interested...
Just realized I'm supposed to attend a wedding that day with my sister. I don't know the bride and groom, so hopefully my sister will let me out of my commitment to going.
I've confirmed with my sister that it's okay if I don't go to the wedding with her. So I'm in. :)
I'm free that weekend, but this looks to be a pretty tough crowd. If I do decide to go, I'll definitely be the back marker!

Look what I found on my computer! the route slip!
Hey Extort,
I'm trying to remember if there was an error on the route slip, or if we we're just boneheads (the likely option), but I remember getting off course near the Fairgrounds. I think it was around mile 25 or so, we we're supposed to take a right, and we missed it. If we can figure out what the deal was, it would be nice to fix the route slip, or if we missed the turn, we should make it bold or something, so it doesn't get missed again.
Also- Mr Pico, when are you going to chime in, and put youre name on the list :P
I really only remember that there was a lot of traffic around mile 25 because of the LA County Fair (should not be an issue this year). However, I can map this out via g-maps and validate the route slip...

it doesn't fall on one of my MTB races, so I might try the challenge, we'll see how I fair after Tour de Poway.
