Greetings,
I"ve been riding since mid April of 2006. I'm doing about 20 miles a day and have ridden about 650 miles this year. My long ride for the week in now up to 30 miles. I'm wondering would it be possibe (without killing myself in the process) to be able to work up to an eight day, 400 mile tour in about 9 and 1/2 months. Is this goal unrealistic?
I have been on two tours this year and am currently getting ready for 50 in the HHH 100. I have managed to avoid the SAG wagon, but there has been a time when it was hovering around me like a hungry buzzard.
:(
If you are healthy you shouldn't have any problem just hitting the road and giving it a go. You need a bike that while it doesn't have to be a special thing, it needs a realistic low gear. After that if you put in a full day you will cover tons of miles. Just set out and never go any harder than you feel is consistant with your next day performance. All the training you need for a tour can be done in the first few days, as long as you aren't trying to match someone else's pace. You will be nailing 100 mile days within the first week in favourable conditions.

It is certainly possible. You will need to dedicate time to ride multiple times per week, including a long ride once per week. You should keep pushing your distance on the long ride until you are comfortable doing 60 miles or so. You'll need to be able to manage 60 miles per day for multiple days, so at some point you'll need to do consecutive long rides.
Get some winter riding clothes later this year so you can keep at it.
You should be able to do that kind of distance now. 50 miles a day is only 4 hours of riding. Very doable. I think you'll surprise yourself if you give it a try.
