Touring - j&g touring shorts -- any experiences?

anyone had any experiences with the j&g touring shorts? how did they feel and look off the bike? has anyone swum in them? and finally, this a real question, is their fit a real baggy one, or is it sort of more "stylish", ie a little tapered, a little more fitted?

I just bought a pair and am happy so far. They're very comfortable on and off the bike. They have a thin pad that helps a bit on longer rides, but not chamois level. The pad dries amazingly fast, so I guess you could swim in them, just haven't had a chance yet.
Hmmm, baggy or fitted? Well they're kinda in between. Definately not baggy. If baggies are a 10, and fitted are a 1, call these a 4. If your after comfort, these are pretty tough to beat. Though you could beat them by ordering the J&G patrol short ;-) HTH

dewaday - very helpful! i like the 4 on scale to 10. i'm looking for something i can wear in the city and not look like a suburban doofus, which all normal super-baggy shorts make me look like.. i like the more tapered look, ie imagine tighter jeans cut off above the knees. something like that, would you say the shorts *approximate* this? i know i'm getting detailed here but hey, what can you do :-) if you wear it all day you want it to look ok.

no no, definitely not the baggy thang. Eh, but not tighter cut off jean territory either. Non-descript? Vanilla? Utilitarian? Wallflower? what's the word? Wallflower i think, no one will really notice them either way.
Couple other points, since we're into detail...Very lightweight fabric, so very little shape, but comfortable. No back pockets, very deep zippered front pockets, but comfortable. The pad does have a little weight, so it hangs a bit when walking. Never bothers me, but it's there, but comfortable.

I have two pairs of them and like them a lot. They are a little short on me, but I'm a tall skinny guy so it is hard to get things that fit anyways. They are a simple no nonsense short that is definetly a looser fit than a lycra short, but not super baggy. Think of like a running short or soccer short. I felt perfectly comfortable walking around in them and they felt great on the bike too.

These are now my absolutely favorite touring shorts. They are lightweight with just enough, but not too much, padding. I can wash them out under a campground faucet or in a sink, wring them out, and have them dry as a bone the next morning no matter how humid outside. They have two zippered side pockets that are extrememly deep. I suspect that they might be a little on the short side for guys, but if you favor comfort over looking cool they should be fine.
The padding is different from most cycling shorts. They used to use a synthetic lambswool type fabric. Now it seems to be more of a fleece fabric. The ones I just received were very fleecy--sorta weird feeling at first but absorbant and comfortable for a long day on the road.
BTW, this company (J&G) makes an awesome cycling cape for rainy rides.

I have a pair of their "baggy" shorts, (baggy compared to regular cycling shorts) and I have their rain cape.

The cape gets a 10 and the shorts get a 2 out of ten. If you are just going up to the corner store, the shorts are fine, but for a full day of saddle time they do not rank high for me. For real touring, use real cycling shorts, just my opinion. I have worn a lot of different shorts looking for the most comfortable and pick Boure Classic as the best, http://www.boure.com/index.html . I have two pairs and like them. An inch or so longer would be an improvement, and the padding comes way up in the front, which feels a little weird, diaper-like, but not uncomfortable and doesn't get in the way of anything. Fabric is light and comfortable, and the pockets are useful on tours. I rode in them for 30+ miles a day this summer and they felt fine. They look pretty normal (not too tight, not too baggy) if this is an issue.

I think they're actually made in Oregon, and I like the feeling of owning one of the few items of consumer merchandise still made in the USA...
