I was driving at about 60 mph on the freeway yesterday (hauling a trailer of all things). Suddenly about 4 cars ahead of me folks start slamming brakes, sliding around, crossing all lanes, etc. A near accident right before my eyes. How those cars didn't hit, who knows, but I am counting my lucky starts that I could slow my vehicle and trailer in time (barely). Turns out the whole situation occureed when a bicycle wheel apparently flew off of a bike that some guy was hauling in the bed of a pickup. He had a whole bunch of bikes--like childrens & adult recreational bikes all piled back there in a big heap. One of them must have had a wheel just spin right off the frame and go flying across the freeway, hitting cars before it finally came to rest. One of the cars was a small compact car like a Honda civic or such. I think it got hit like right on the hood or windshield--the driver stopped on the freeway and was P.O.'d big time. He looked ready to slug the truck driver.

Moral of the story--secure your wheels. Also, for you mechanics out there--could a bike wheel just spin its way off a fork, or do you suspect this wheel must have been detached to start?

The truck driver needed to secure his load. No, a properly attached wheel will not come off.
