I am pretty sure you can park on Sierra Madre, I will ride by there tomorrow and check it out..
Thanks Erik. Meeting in a parking lot would be nice, but otherwise, meeting on GMR and Sierra Madre probably would do just fine.
We could just park at the top in Baldy. It would save a lot of time and sweat. :D
Plans have changed with my daughter and I am now free to join this ride!!!
Jason, I'd like a reservation for one please!
Great! Your former spot on the list (right after voltman) has been restored.

Take the 101 to the 134 to the 210 and exit Grand, it's past Hwy 39 and the Miller Brewery, probably about 35-40 miles from VN. Anyway, exit Grand and go north (left) about 3 miles to Sierra Madre, turn right and soon you will see GMR, go left and look for cyclists. I don't know how far up they are parking, but there is a gate.
thanks man! thats perfect! nice and easy....

Maybe, but before I met you I thought you were a 16 year old Japanese girl.
It just makes me think of those Japanese cartoons...red hair or not.
Yeah, caligurl, I thought you might be Asian initially, too. I was a bit afraid you might be an ex-girlfriend since you share her birthday. I was very relieved when I first found out you live out in the desert.

Me + 1 plan on joining the group for this ride. Is the hill to the ski lift harder than Calihill after the 100 mile mark? Longer and/or steeper or both?
Look forward to it.

That's really funny, guys......I initially thought she was Asian too!
Okay, one more to add to that list. Welcome aboard.
4.6 miles from village to ski resort, averaging 8.6% grade. Averages about 9% grade if you factor out the shallower portion within the village. About 10% average grade for the last three miles. 15% grade right at the end.

Alrighty then!
My buddy will be in for the lifts for sure. I'll decide from the village.
Thanks.

As 50,000 more people join this ride every day, I'm even more bummed that I can't go. Fixer, you're gonna have a tough day taking all those pics on your own!

Sorry you're gonna miss this ride but there'll be more. I'm actually envious of your mtb camp trip.
I'll just plant myself on one switchback and start snapping away. My new 1GB card should handle most of the riders and short downhill vid clips I plan on shooting...:D

One of our SAG drivers (ie: friend's wife) cancelled, so things are kinda up in the air as we try and recruit an alternate. We'll make it happen, though.

NICE! I keep meaning to bring my little REI tripod like yours to a ride... but I never do.
Relayer, is that where you're riding to? Better bring your MTB. :D

Some of us understand your fear of group riding. In fact I'll even ride with you at the back if that'll make you comfortable. I'll take pictures of you climbing and even make them look like you're out at the front with the lead group.....:D

Is anyone lilely to come down Baldy road and either end in the Claremont area or ride back to Glendora? Or is everyone going to make it an out and back ride?

i don't think it's decided???? i know i plan to do out and back.... but with that many people... who knows... may get a group for each????? jason will know better what's up!
Anyone who wants to head back via Claremont and La Verne (or ride back to Claremont without heading back to the start) obviously may do so. Just make sure those riding around you know your intentions so that no one is looking for you. I'll lead the way if necessary, but that only helps you if you're willing to wait around Baldy village until the last of the riders are leaving Baldy village.

OK guys, I did a "training ride" for this and it has me a little concerned. Does anyone know the grade of Ridge Park at the top of Newport Coast? I rode it this evening and if GMR/GRR/Baldy are anywhere near the same grade, I know I can't handle it for that many miles.

OK, maybe it's not as bad as I thought. According to my Garmin, Ridge Park ranges from 9 to 11%. Not sure if it's accurate but it makes me feel better anyway.
Funny thing though. I started and finished at my house and the data from my Garmin shows a total ascent of 1,356 and a total descent of 1,262. I think I would notice if I was floating 94 ft above my house.

Ridge Park ranges from 8-15%, total gain is around 400-500'. GMR isn't that steep, it just goes on for a while. You'll be fine, the stretch from the village to the ski lifts is kinda like 4.5 mile of Ridge Park, if you don't feel like going all the way to the lifts, all you have to do is turn around and it's all downhill:D

Where/When :D
cjbruin, you'll definitely be fine up to the village. It's like climbing Newport Coast all day long. From there, based on your reported grade for Ridge Park, you should be able to at least make it to Icehouse Canyon, where the switchbacks start. The 3 miles after that average 10% grade. If you've been holding back and pacing yourself, you may well make it. Just ride tempo up to Icehouse Canyon, then ride what amounts to Ridge Park back to back to back, taking breaks as necessary.

Now you got me scared. I would love to join you guys. Count me in, although I am not 100% positive if can make it. I have a boss that loves to say "go here and fix that" on a very short notice. Hopefully no AOGs.
if it makes anyone feel any better, I will be suffering more than most because I am only going to have the 12-25 cassette...
at least I love hills.

39x25 is pretty much needed for the Switchbacks at the end, a 27 would be nice.. the Mt. Baldy TT course record was set using a 39x21..
