Southern California - SoCal Sept 2 ride: GMR/GRR/Baldy

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Water: It is supposed to be very hot. You must carry enough water to get you to Baldy village. That's about 24 miles and 4000 feet of climbing.
Route: Glendora Mountain Rd (GMR), Glendora Ridge Rd (GRR), Baldy Rd to the ski resort. Out and back. Optionally rest at Baldy village (intersection of GRR and Baldy Rd) while waiting on those who head to the ski resort. Optionally return by way of Claremont and La Verne. Route is 41-58 miles with 4000-7600 vertical feet. (On the shortest route, virtually all the climbing is in the first 24 miles.)
Logistics: Roll at 8 AM from the intersection of GMR and Boulder Springs Dr in Glendora, CA. People--epecially faster riders--are encouraged to find ride partners from within the group and take off in smaller groups. Note that there is no water for the first 24 miles and nearly 4000 feet of climbing. Make sure to carry enough water to cover that distance without a refill.
This is a no-drop ride for slower riders. I will lead the no-drop group at least until the intersection of GMR and GRR. At that point, we may split into smaller groups as appropriate to allow those who intend to go to the ski resort to go on ahead. There will always be someone comfortable with leading the way in the last group on the road, either myself or someone else. For the no-drop group, official regroup points on the way up will be the intersection of GMR and GRR, Baldy village, and the ski resort parking lot.
Riders: All riders welcome. The following people are currently signed up. We would love to have you join us.

Is it too soon for me to start crying?
caligurl, will Reese's peanut butter cups do? I can bring you some for a snack at Baldy village. :) (Ha! Your comment is no longer off topic.) And if you enjoy a fast non-technical descent into Claremont, there's a Baskin Robbins at the corner of Mills and Baseline.
I know you don't like 8 AM. My 6:30 start time got out-voted by others. Sorry.

if we go... i'll probably do like i've done every other time we've done GMR and leave as soon as i'm ready so as to not hold anyone up! lol! especially since if i do do this ride (i said do do!) i want to attempt baldy.... i think! lol!

Ok, here's my OT, whiny post: Where's all the flat rides?!? Huh? I can't manage those ginormous hills yet. Now that my riding partner is on the down-low I need some company! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v703/jody68/lonely2.gif

tiff.... GMR itself (the boulder to the village part) is NOT a bad hill! YOU CAN DO IT! i did it as a month... month and a half???? rider! i was slow (well.... i'm still slow!) but i did it! and SO CAN YOU!
Where's all the flat rides?!?
Organize one, and people will show up. Most anytime I'm free, I'd be happy to ride with you. Or... you free this Sunday? Extort, 1955, chimivee, cjbruin, and I are considering doing a ride this Sunday. Look in the Labor Day thread.

i think it's official.... we've hijacked the thread! i feel better now!
By the way, Tiff, you're definitely welcome for this ride. As caligurl pointed out, though there's a lot of climbing, it doesn't get very nasty until the stretch to the ski resort. You could hang out in Baldy village while those who choose to go to the ski resort go.

ok..... i have a related question!??????????????????
you keep saying that those not doing baldy can hang out at the village... but doesn't the baldy part take a while? like WAY over an hour for slowpokes like me?????????????????
if there are enough people (which it's sounding like there is) that they would be better off heading back down the mountain rather than letting their legs get all stiff an cold? anyways... just a thought (only cuz i know i couldn't wait around then climb back down the mountain! lol!)

Yeah Tiff......GMR is like................Santiago Canyon. You can easily make it up to the villiage...:)

They can go ahead and start back if they choose. They should just make their intentions clear if that's the case so that no one's waiting around Baldy village looking for them. I'm not sure how many people aren't going to the ski resort, though. Last time, lsits chose to wait for us in Baldy village. (I understand this time, he's going to the ski resort.) Things might have been different if he wasn't alone in waiting at Baldy village.
Plus, some people enjoy nice long breaks. I know you're not one of them, but some might not mind lounging in Baldy village for a while. As stated in the other thread, there's plenty of options for people to pick from.

I hope you're kidding. GMR is not terribly steep, but it's certainly harder than Santiago Canyon. I still think most people can make it up GMR given time and the right gearing. The Village to the ski lifts is the only part that really makes you feel the pain.:) Unless, you go straight up Mt Baldy Rd, then hog's back is pretty nasty too.

That's why you gotta do the hilly rides... so you CAN manage those "ginormous hills." Let's go do some climbing to prep you for GMR. I'll ride with you!

I'll have to see if I can get that Saturday morning free, Saturdays are usually out for me. If I can make it, I'll start at 6:00am and meet up with you guys somewhere along GRR, and head back up with the group. If anyone else wants to start early and get some extra miles and climbing in, let me know. I'll cross my fingers that I can get out for the morning:D

Hmm.. I am thinking about going.. We have to come up to take care of my parents dog that weekend so then it would be good timing to ride GMR/GRR...
If I go then Pico will go. But I'llhave to skip the last part of it.. cause I did it last time so I have at least done it ONCE! Plus my knee is hurting from Cool Breeze.
If I go I'll be quite slow.. since i have to do it with a double compact which really wears me out fast...
This is NO DROP right? Someone will be with me?
Will have to double check with Pico if he wants to do this ride... since he will be doing one I think this weekend with OC Roadie?

You may not be...remember, I need to haul my 225 lb frame up those hills...I'm not at all what you would call a climber.

Yes, this weekend Pico and I will crush the monster that is Mt Baldy (hopefully setting a new PR), just to make sure we get the job done, we'll conquer twice:D After the Labor Day weekend, I will probably say goodbye to Baldy for the year, except for the century ride in October.
Oh Yeah, great job on Cool Breeze Mrs Pico:beer:
