Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone have any info on this Miele Julian? Approx. year? Frame material? Quality? Value? I can't find anything online, and the seller has no catalog info.

Hi! I recently purchased a gray/silver Miele that looks identical to yours. The serial no. is LS 562710. The handlebar, crankset and seat post are Sakae; the brakes and brake levers are Dia-compe; the front and rear derailleurs are early Shimano (i.e. friction), and the wheels are a combination of Ambrosio Elite (Extra) rims and Suzue hubs. Best I can tell by dating the components (i.e. the hub, brakes, seatpost and derailleurs), the bike appears to date from between 1984 and 1986. Unfortunately, the sticker identifying the tubing has been removed. If you still have a sticker on your bike, could you let me know what it says ? I'm fairly certain that the bike was made in Japan or Taiwan since I understand that Miele did not start producing bikes in Canada until 1987 and it doesn't say "Made in Canada" on the head tube. Hope this is helpful.

Just one clarification to my earlier post - when I said that the derailleurs are early Shimano, I also wanted to say that they are Shimano "Z" series (RD-Z501 and FD-Z401). I believe, but I'm not sure, that they originally came with the bike. As well, the back of the brake lever has 03-83 stamped on it while the Suzue hub is stamped 4 I LPF.

Hi again. Just a brief update on what I've learned about my Miele road bike since my last post. First, after dating some more parts, the oldest of which are the Sakae XS cranks, which are date stamped 3-85, it appears that the bike was probably sold around 1985 or 1986. Second, thanks to the magic of forums such as this one, I met someone who worked in the Ottawa bike shop (Pecco's) that sold Miele's like mine in the mid-80's. To the best of his recollection my silver/gray Miele was marketed as a Miele Tempo, with doubled butted tubing for the main triangle, probably Tange Infinity or its equivalent Tange 900, or possibly Ishiwata 022 (T-Mar - Any corrections or further information you may have would be welcomed.)
Over the past winter and this spring I fixed the bike up. Since the rear rim was shot, I replaced both wheels with a new set: Alex AT-450 rims and Shimano Tiagra hubs. The rear derailleur was also past fixing, so I now have Tiagra front and rear derailleurs, as well as a Tiagra triple crankset (the granny ring is a must at my age) and a new bottom bracket. I managed to buy everything on ebay for just under $200. I bought the bike locally for much less. It's a joy to ride, and the exercise I get as a result is the best upgrade of all. I hope the info is of interest or useful to other Miele riders. Ciao.
