Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Any Fixed Gear riders???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yes, yes. I have an old 80's road bike that I converted to fixed this past fall. It's mainly my commuter...fenders, gray spray paint job, fat 35mm tires. It's a kick to ride but I've had to walk it up a couple of the hills here in Seattle. Currently using 42x16 gearing.
Just putting my fixed-gear back together, in hopes of soon being able to ride...
Currently it has 42x16 gearing and is riding on nokian studded tyres (700c x 35), but I'll be switching things out so that it will be riding on the 32 pasela t-servs and with a 50x16 gearing soon.
50x16! Power hound huh?:D
the Schwinn...shake down cruise was yesterday!!! Smooth!
50x16! Power hound huh?
I built it mostly for riding on the long, flat trails and paths along the canal locally. The trail near me is about 90 miles long, and only has hills at the locks. It varies from fine gravel to paved.

I'm converting a Miyata 1000 to fixed. Have an old Dura-Ace EX track crank with a Shimano 7610 BB with a spindle length of 109 mm. Brooks Team Pro saddle. Will be using 47/16 with Dura-Ace track hub. Hope to get 2 rolly poly tyres to go with the Mavic Open Pro rims. Just ordered a Parks Tensionmeter to build my own wheels (hopefully!)

I converted my old horse, an '88 paramount w/ durace, into a fixie.
Sweet, nibble, like a body extension. Now if I can just get the cardiocutters to leave me alone long enough to lay down some base miles before the season.

I have a fixed gear CCM which is being eaten away by road salt as I write this.
This was definitely the right year to try a fixed gear for the winter.
Yeah, I have several and they are posted at Fixed gallery http://www.tc-homes.com/bike/forum/fg-bikes/ Nice site with a lot of drool

I am such creature of habit I hadn't even noticed this SS/FG Forum. How long has it been here?
Anyway, a month or two ago I finally got to build up an old ('70s era) Trek fixie after a year without one. Right now I have a little 39/17 on it since it is mainly for working on spinning. I have an early '80s Schwinn set up ss freewheel with 48/18.

just bought this one, replaced the old madwagon we sold at a garage sale
That's a Phat ride shoot.
My rides at the fixed gear gallery are under Tucker Bennett, there are three, my Schwinn, my Cannondale, and my MULE, actually I think there is a fourth, my Raleigh. Since I've been posting that link on the forums it's grown in size. I don't think Dennis had any idea what he was in for. Help him out with the cost too.

I love all your fixie bikes! Here's my bike at the Fixed gallery site (http://www.tc-homes.com/bike/forum/fg-bikes/andycarpenter.htm)
Currently the bike is on a wind-trainer and will be back on the road soon. I have a new job with a 30 mile round-trip commute with lots of traffic. I've scoped out the route and plan on starting back on the bike commute real soon. Still debating on whether I should ride the fixie (kind of rolling terrain) or go back to the MTB with slicks. Maybe I'll try the fixie and see how it goes. If it kills me, then I'll reserve this special bike for flat rides and training.
Have fun with your fixies people.
Ive a dolan track frame, plannin on courier work so no carbon!!!! Miche primato crancks, Dura-ace rear hub, running 48-13 gearing mavic rims etc... As an owner of a multi-speed racer i'd definatly recommend fixies they're just better and more fun and if you can make it up a hill u'll do it faster then you wud on a racer....!

I ride a fixed gear. Even with my gray hair and aging look I get stares from teen-aged girls. I never get that on my geared bike.
Anyone, anyone?
haha what? have a guess...

Oh yeah! I've been commuting, running errands, and exercising on my Pake for about three weeks now. At first it gave me sore knee caps. Standard remedy for that is to raise the saddle, but I was already at the seat post insertion limit. Instead of tweaking the bike I focused on making smooth, deliberate circles with my feet. Knee pain vanished. :) Big test was yesterday, when a front brought freezing 20 knot winds out of the north. I left the house, four miles south of the office, worried that either I or my knees would be d.o.a. Half an hour later, I arrived hale, hearty, and refreshed. Plenty of energy, no pain. I will enjoy the silence and efficiency of fixies forever more, and always wonder why I putzed around shifting and coasting for all those years. A fixie is the better bike and it will make you a better rider.
I know. The above lesson could have come from SS, although at least one account (http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed-knees.html) asserts that using the legs to slow down, as on a fixie, can be therapeutic.
Then there's the fact that the free hub on my hybrid was about ready to give it up after less than a year in the weather.
I could go on, but it's time to ride. Ciao!

jeez--i dont know if there are any fixed gear riders in the singlespeed and fixed gear forum----i think you may need to dig deeper watson!
ok, if you look at the post, it was made on February 27, 2003. it for some reason just got moved into this forum or pulled up to the top.. was there a singlespeed and fixed gear forum back then?
Man, people don't know how to read dates, do they? Notice RainmanP's reply asks how long there even was a fixie/ss forum? Or how the link to FGG is from when it was a sub-site of a real-estate site?
And, no, I don't ride fixie. Brakeless freewheel all the way!!!
