Southern California - Sunday, Aug 27 ride planning

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yep, great shots, James. Thanks to Extort for arranging the ride and to everyone who rode. Had a blast.
Nice pics, James. :)
Nice report Jchen... I wish I could climb like you

Nice pics, James. :)
Missed you on our ride... I could have used your help chasing down Extort.
Sounds like you put in some good riding today. You're so scientific about it. :p
I could have used your help chasing down Extort.
Sorry. You do realize, though, that I can only keep up with Extort going downhill?
You're so scientific about it. :p
Excessive analysis is one way I keep myself amused during solo rides. I think having a cyclocomputer spewing data at me was one of the reasons I initially found cycling so addicting.
By the way, many of the backgrounds in the pics look awfully familiar. Would I be correct in assuming that a large part of this ride was a selection of roads from TdSS stage 3, two weeks ago and from the ride extension (the bike path and descent of Shady Canyon)? Looks like fun. Maybe I missed it... what kind of mileage did you guys end up doing today?

You are correct! Lots of overlap from TdSS3, including Shady Canyon, Laguna Canyon, PCH, Newport Coast, and Vista Ridge (that short but steep climbing detour - some dude in a polka dot jersey was doing repeats up it. jerk.). Total distance was about 48 mi, ~2600' climbing. It was a great ride. (Oh yeah, and Melissa did Newport Coast TWICE!)

Ride Report (well...sort of). The ride didn't go exactly according to plan for Mrs. Bruin (Rose) and me.
Thanks of the pics, CJ. Sorry you had to split off from the group, but glad you could bring Mrs. Bruin out.

I don't think Flickr let's you upload video...? But there's quite a few others, like YouTube and PhotoBucket. I don't like YouTube because of all the other garbage in the window when you're watching a video (fun if you're just browsing though). I saw Fixers PhotoBucket video posts and thought they look much cleaner. Just keep in mind that whatever site you use, it's most likely gonna really compress the video and degrade it - but, hey, it's free.

Thanks. This time I'm mounting my camera on one of the fork blades. This should be interesting....:D
You could get a shot of descending into Manker Flats, accelerating from nothing to ~50 MPH in under a quarter mile before having to slow down because of all the cars and people you're fast approaching.

i'll try to remember to upload it to night (WHY didn't i put it on the key?????????? dummy!!!!!!)
19 MPH average?! Was that speed solo? Yikes! Why exactly was I the one doing the pulling in the early part of our ride together two weeks ago?
Hey Jason,
No, I didn't ride solo. The ride started with five of us and three of us ended up finishing together, one only rode part way and one other fell off of the back a few miles from the dam. Also for about the last 8 miles I stayed on the wheels of the two strong riders I went with and on the last 5 or so, Greg and I both hung onto Lenny痴 wheel. We had waited for our friend Francis a few times when he let us go for the last 5 miles.
It occurred to me that I picked up a bug while in the Dominican Republic in the beginning of July. There is no caution about drinking the water in the resort but they do say it's not a clean as the water in the good old US of A. I did get the typical reaction from the water to a minor degree that went away after about two weeks. But I guess it really did hang on to me more than that because even though I felt better on that ride with you and Dave I was very tentative and afraid I would die out quickly as I had been for the last month or so. I can稚 say I値l be able to help you next week, but the next time we are on the flats I promise to do MOST of the pulling.
Also, I知 sorry I missed this ride, but I was dead the next morning, I知 just not recovering all that well now that I知 over 50 years old (yeah, yeah I know all about you older guys, but I知 talking about me here).:D
Okay, since 19 MPH average was in a group, we can share pulls. If it were a solo average speed, I'd probably tuck in behind you all the time.

Good, I was hoping you'd turn me down.:)
We should have gotten Voltman to flex with "Mr. Serious" in-front of the sign. I still think the burrito is as large as Voltman's bicep.....and Voltman you have great biceps. ;) That burrito is just CRAZY BIG!!!!! Did you finish it yesterday or did you save it for today?
I had a blast on the ride too! I really enjoy riding with you guys. My goal was to just keep Chimivee and Extort in view- you guys are so freakin' fast. I am in AWE!!! I lost my view of you guys on LCR...however I had DaveSANYYZ to pull me to the end....we were able to keep about 21-22 MPH at points! :D (thanks Dave!!!) I cursed all the way up Vista Ridge...but I am glad we did it. Newport Coast the second time around was not too bad- just really warm. I was dripping sweat....no breeze:mad: Not even the cars going by provide any reprieve....sucked! I just kept my 8-9 MPH up the hill....I may be slow- but I am determined. Next time we will ALL do NPC twice....maybe we should try repeaters too?! Hahahaha....we would need polka dot jerseys and we may have to cash in our red stars (no way!!! especially with all of the hard work James has put into the jerseys!)
James, thanks for the great pictures. Voltman and Chimivee thanks for hanging with us after. I am glad I got to experience Mr. Serious and to see Surf City Cyclery....what a great store.
I can't wait to try my new seat!!!! :) I want to ride today....but I am stuck at work!
Hope you are all having a great week. I will miss you guys on Saturday. Matt plans on joining you guys. I am sad I have to miss it!:(
See you all soon--
Melissa
PS- CJ it was good to see you and meet Mrs. Bruin! :D

8-9 MPH for a second climb of Newport Coast is slow? Oh dear... I'll have to bring myself a tow rope next time I ride with you guys.

You are too sweet! I know you could climb NPC at that MPH....if not faster. You are too modest regarding your riding abilities!!!! ;)

Ralph can verify that two weeks ago, on my second climb, I was averaging mid- to high-8's. On my first climb, much earlier in the day, low- to mid-9's. I'm not all that much faster.

8.x mph is my typical 1st time climbing speed when I'm fresh. :p Hmm 5:30pm already, I better head out to my closest hill (TP) for some serious training...
Dave, be sure to wave as you pass by my building. :) The traffic light on N Torrey Pines just past the intersection with Genessee is for the parking lot of my institute. My building is the one at the north end of the lower parking lot. (It's attached to the hospital by way of another building attached to it.)

Great photos, Extort. I'm going to steal your behind the back technique next time.

Yeah, and each time I moved out of my comfy aero-sphere to try and take a pull, I drifted backwards like the feather I am. You were movin'! It was fun.
