Southern California - Sunday, Aug 27 ride planning

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
In no particular order, Extort, 1955, chimivee, cjbruin, mel44, and mateo44 are thinking of doing something this Sunday. Let's work out something. So far, it's been proposed that we could join Extort's MS training ride, then continue on for a ride extention afterward.
[EDIT] Funny how I never mentioned myself in the first sentence, huh? Well, unfortunately, I'm bailing on y'all. Sorry.
Start time: 8 AM
Start location: See post #23

I should be in.

Yeah, Mel and I are in, and aren't picky about the route. If it helps, we're also glad to sweep/corral the newer MS riders, per Extort's request.
Lookin' forward to it.

awwwwwwwwww i wish we didn't live so far away http://www.smileycons.com/img/Fun_pak/car.gif
caligurl, so plan a ride out there already. I'd be happy to go out there to ride with you once in a while. I love driving.
Let's see what others think, but riding with Extort's group and then extending somehow afterward sounds like a good plan to me.
I know...you all want to ride down to Rosarito so you can visit Tiffanie and yours truly! :D
Would your husbands approve of a bunch of fit cyclists joining you in Rosarito?

They'll be drunk...they won't care. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/BrandyMama/drink.gif
That's adorable. Umm, which one's which? One of them seems to hold his liquor a lot better than the other. You and Tiff want to run off with me to Puerto Nuevo for some lobster? ;)

That was already in our plan...so it looks like you'd be running off with us. ;)

We already had the plan to get the lobster in Puerto Nuevo. However, we buy live from the boats and bring them back to the house. The more the merrier!!! :D

I should be in as well.
Please provide more details/map of the meeting point since I have a habit of getting lost while driving.
Thanks!
Dave, we could just carpool again. Unless my driving scares you or something. :p
Oh wait... Brandy and Tiff inviting me to run off with them? Why did I commit to this ride before determining their plans? I can't possibly abandon all the guys.

Sure! Just feel guilty having you do the driving.
For the other one (GMR/GRR/Baldy), I think I'll drive in case I can't make it up the top and need to bail out mid-way. :p
Well, for GMR/GRR/Baldy, I won't be leaving from San Diego, so you have to drive yourself. I'll be at my parents' place before and after the ride.
As for having me do the driving, I couldn't care less. I love to drive.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/BrandyMama/laughcover.gif It's okay...we see where your loyalty is. We'll think of you while we're drinking margaritas from the deck of the beach house.

easy to get here... (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&addtohistory=&address=3353%20Michelson%20Dr&city=Irvine&state=CA&zipcode=92612%2d7622&country=US&geodiff=1)
From the 405, exit Jamboree.
If you were heading towards San Diego while on the 405:
get into the middle lane of the 405 exit (there are 5 lanes at the light) and turn right onto Jamboree
and get into the far left lane and turn left onto Michelson. (first stoplight)
On Michelson, pass through two stop lights and turn left on Riparian.
Riparian leads into a large parking area where you should see the group.
If you were heading towards Los Angeles while on the 405:
get into the left lane of the 405 exit and turn left onto Jamboree
stay in the far left lane and turn left onto Michelson. (second stoplight)
On Michelson, pass through two stop lights and turn left on Riparian.
Riparian leads into a large parking area where you should see the group.
Okay, since no one's actually decided anything definitive yet, here it is...
We're joining Extort's training ride and helping him out a bit. Roll at 8 AM. Directions in the above post. Afterward, we'll keep riding, route to be decided.

Extort, what is the approximate route of the MS training ride?

I'm hoping this isn't just joking, and someone will want to have lunch at Las Primas post-ride!
Needless to say, I'm in!

Extort, what is the approximate route of the MS training ride?
Well, my name is not Extort...but it's basically a ride down the coast from Irvine (near where the training ride is going to start) for the people who do 50 on the first day. The route takes you through Camp Pendleton so you don't need to ride on the 5. The 100 mi people take off into the hills in Carlsbad and come back after all of the food & drinks have been consumed by the 50 mile riders. The next day is the final 50 to Mission Bay.
Oops...I misread your post...I thought you were asking about the actual MS route. Sorry.

The route will be from Park Place down harvard... then through UCI to bonita canyon. R on BC to MacArthur. L on Mac to PCH. L on PCH down to Crystal Cove. The route back is similar but I think they go down to Jamboree and come back up Back Bay and the bike trail to Park Place.
I know a couple weeks ago they came back Newport Coast.
I should be able to make it.

Cool, thanks!
better sign up for the actual MS150 soon... they are almost sold out. (max of 2000 riders)

madmike has the route correct, from there I believe that we will tackle Shady Canyon and over to Laguna Canyon for the brand new road that cars are not allowed on yet :D which will put us at about 30 extra miles beyond assisting with the newbies...
Then we will have lunch wherever people want... (as long as there is  )

Extort, how many riders from your group will there be? Just a suggestion, but what do you think of riding up San Miguel from Bonita Cyn to Newport instead of MacArthur? There's much less traffic and you end up in the same place.

Hey Jason, the Orange County Rebel Riders are doing a GMR ride this Sunday. They are encouraging virgin GMR'er to attend. Said they are going to have some of the better riders hang back for the newbies. They usually have nearly 20 riders everytime they go up,all levels.
Not sure if Gina wants to go, I'm working on it. Says she'd feel better if we try it alone first though.
I thought you guys had already gotten your personal invitations!:D
Just an idea!
GMR's next Saturday for me. A more social ride seems good for this Sunday. (Hard to be social when strung out across ten miles of hilly terrain!)

when we were planning the route for this year's ride we needed to consider the newbie's that would be on the ride, and San Miguel and other routes were considered too steep... so we put people into heavy speeding traffic instead!
We are using these training rides to show everyone the new starting route to PCH, because this year the ride is starting at Park Place instead of Huntington Beach... My company helped to make that happen and that saved the MS society almost $20,000.
Last week, there was about 25 people there and we expect more each week.
I hate to do this to a ride that I helped make sure happened, but I might be backing out on you guys. With some long daylight hours still available and nice moderate temperatures, there's some rides I was thinking of perhaps trying. So I might take this Sunday to try one of those rides. I'll let you guys know soon.

Sorry Jason, but I'm afraid that we just can't allow that to happen, see you Sunday morning.:D

I think you mean San Joaquin...San Miguel is a very gentle grade. No worries, I'll ride wherever. Especially since Murphy's Law would probably have something happen if we changed because of my suggestion and then it would be all my fault.
