what route did y'all take from newark penn to philly? i've been interested in that route myself

Not that i rode it, but I heard, Rt. 27 from Newark. Cross to Route 206 in Princeton and then cross the Delaware River in Trenton, and then possibly Route 13??? down to Philly.

Yes, that's pretty much the same route I took from NYC through Philly. Mostly flat road riding with a little bit of highway thrown in to keep you awake.

check this guy's (http://www.mattababy.org/~belmonte/Home/Bicycle/NewYork_to_Baltimore/) route. Just scratch out the Goethal's bridge part and replace with a road that runs down to 27.

So much ****ing fun! Thanks to Dailey/the PBMA crew, Mike Dee/the NYC crew, and everyone who came out.

If anyone's got pics of the kid on the blue bike with an aerospoke front (me), pm me.

last night, I couldn't find any flicks of you. Did you race?

I've contracted a horrible horrible cold recently, and really feel like absolute ****.

I guess there is another Jp in philly now, this one transplanted from boston.

maybe if you live so close to me, you can swing by in a few days when I'm feeling a bit better.

I was there and it was funny for a minute. The 'corporate guy' is Marc Maclean who ran the computers all weekend for the races and is one of the hardest working NYC messengers that I know.

He does'nt have anything to do with Puma, I think he was just ****ing with the messenguerilla.

Marc and Victor (another hardworking messenger) were sitting under the banner when two guys in masks 'attacked' yelling stuff about sellouts etc. (I did note that these guys were ex-messengers from ny who were wearing adidas and nike sneakers respectively).

When the two masked men could not wrestle the banner from Marc and Victor, more guerillas joined in. It took 5 mg's to get the banner in the end.

As I am sponsored by Puma, I felt kind of weird but did not intervene. The mg's had a camera crew filming the incident and I did'nt want to look like a heavy (!?).

I think it was meant to be in jest but it looked ugly to me overall. Apologies to Marc and Victor for not jumping in!

So in the future all you mg's out there if you got beef with Puma sponsoring my team and events, please take it to me!!

And..

Let me say THANK YOU!!! To all the Philadelphia kids who produced the best damn NACCC I have ever been to (been to a lot).

The crucifying rain on saturday did not keep 125 hardcore riders from competing. Props to all the kids who know how to keep a manifest dry!

Everything ran smooth, no major injuries. Tons of free beer and good vibes. The prize list was tops and the parties as well. Good to see 14 cities represented (including Tokyo!).

Congratulations to Dailey, Stewy, and all Phila Crew. I don't know how but they managed to stay out late drinking every night and got it going every morning.

Props to Austin for taking the Top Spot!

See you in San Francisco for NACCC 2007.

So I took some pictures of the roughhousing, thinking it was all fun and games.

Apparently it wasn't.

Granted, I know MacLean and his orn'ry ways, so I thought it was just an example of him trying to draw out attention. It was to a degree, but the reaction by certain masked participants was over the top. Wrestle, rough-house, have a good time, but don't hurt your friends or those who put out a lot of effort to make the weekend a success.

However, I don't think that the Puma banner should have been down there in the first place, they were not a sponsor of the event, and that banner was repeatedly put up at the race course, the parties, and then finally at the polo bbq. These type of actions are really very loaded in the scene these days. By bringing out the banner of a not-too-well-liked sponsor at an event that they're not sponsoring creates resentment. I'm not justifying the violence, just stating a related point. Whoever busted out that banner, be it felipe or the other mysterious dude I saw hanging it up at the Saturday night party, was not doing any favors for puma, the NACCC, or himself.

The Messenguerilla manifesto, as I have read it, does not single out any particular person or sponsor. It does not say that people should attack Puma representatives, or people looking for shade under their banner. It does say we should always remember that the fun we have at messenger events, both large and small, depends on the people there, and not the dollars that went into it. having said that, a big HELL YEAH to all the organizers, champions, and everybody I got to hang out with this weekend. There were so many faces I had not seen in years. Family f*ckin reunion. That's why I go to these things.

As an instigator of said gorilla attack, I would like to publicly apologize to Marc and Victor for roughing them up. It was not our intention to hurt anyone and it was in no way a personal attack on either of these guys. Both of y'all are friends of mine and I'm truly sorry that you got caught up in our stupid prank. Marc Maclean in particular is one of the hardest working assets that our community has. He runs the show at almost every major NYC alleycat, he was totally the MVP of CMWC in NYC last year, and he is a total trooper when it comes to putting up with our infantile BS on daily, weekly, and monthly basis (including random gorilla attacks on corporate banners and other bizarre and sophomoric pranks...).

To squid, felipe, and the rest of team puma, sincerely, nothing personal, just theatrics that got out of hand. I got love for you guys, and I know that the team is a rare opportunity for you and I understand what it makes possible for you guys to do with racing, the track and everything else. Squid, I truly respect your contribution to the community and I understand your decision to build relationships with various sponsors, big and small.

By way of explaining the incident, the whole idea started Saturday night when a member of team puma hung the puma banner at the awards party. It was hung in a way that made it look like puma might be one of the sponsors of the goldsprints (which it is not). People from the Philly organizing crew approached us and told us that the banner was bothering some people and that they, as the organizers of the NACCC, were not comfortable with it being up. Some one from Philly took it down and threw it on the floor. the next day, the banner was still on the floor when we were cleaning out the party space. We pulled it out of the garbage and decided to give it to the messenguerilla as a trophy. It later got hung up as a sun shade, but it was once again looking like puma was a sponsor of the event (which to my knowledge it was not). We instigated the gorilla attack as a spontaneous prank. We intended only to take down the banner. Marc and Victor were entirely innocent bystanders caught up in the collateral damage.

The whole thing was meant in jest. It got out of hand. Sorry.

BTW, I paid actual american dollars for my adidas (not my sponsor!)... Shoes are pretty much made by corporations, seen. So are bikes, bike parts, messenger bags, gloves, goretex, tires and many other things that we need to use every day. So what?

OK Cool- Thanks for clearing all that up!

Personally I was not into putting up that banner, specifically because it was not a Puma sponsored event.

We do use the banners on our trips including sun and rain protection.

Felipe is a livewire and has been decorating cities with stickers and banners for years, I have a hard time saying no to him, in the future I will be more assertive in these types of situations!

As for the shoes you were wearing, I thought it was notable that you were wearing big company sneakers and protesting the promotion of pretty much the same thing!? I was thinking that anti corporate sponsor guerilla types would be rocking shoes made by their own hand:p !

I have been to a lot of events where people hang their team/sponsor banners, that was my reasoning for not taking it down this weekend. Did not catch all the action at the party space but I agree with you on taking it down there.

That being said I have always and still do support community sponsored events, DIY is hella fun.

Over the past few years my posse in NY (including guys like Chris, Mike, and Hodari and you too BLDZR) have grown our events and gathered more and more people time and again.

Growing pains? I feel them. I hope we can all communicate and if we don't agree, can we try to keep it friendly.

I want to see a better life for NYC Bicycle Messengers and I want to see more Americans riding bicycles.

OOFAH!

Squid,

Dog, that is some discipline from you guys, especially Marc! I just read the last post, why didn't anybody approach Squid about the banner?

It would have been better to explain what people felt, than to display what i am reading.

I'll start making my own sneakers when I'm done raising my kid, making my movie, paying off my student loans, paying off my mortgage, building an addition on my house and installing enough solar to get off grid, learning how to build my own computer, growing all of the food that my family consumes, figuring out how to fix my car myself and convert it to bio-desiel, welding my own bike frames, machining my own components, etc.

Squid, it's all love, man. Big corporate sponsors are a necessary evil, and some are more and others are less evil. I think the "anti-corporate" manifesto is really about controlling our events, not necessarily about making our own shoes. Your sponsor makes it possible for your team to race all over the place and for you to put together cool events like the three city track tour you did this year. Puma was a huge supporter of CMWC last year, and it might not have happened (at least not the way it did) without them. Having said that, CMWC in NYC would definitely not have happened without you, marc maclean, judith, ken, joanne and the dozens of other folks from the NYC crew who volunteered their time, energy, and imagination to making our CMWC an amazing event regardless of what brand sneakers we were wearing at the time...

Def saw some photographers taking pictures of me, yet I haven't been in any of these! I guess it's because 70% of them are hanging out pictures with all of the big NYC/Philly people, but there have to be some out there of a guy in a Brooklyn-style jersey on a plain steel frame with a blue frame pad and nitto drops with blue grips. Help me out!

The jersey is as follows, but without any of the logos, hence the Brooklyn-style:

http://www.bicyclebuys.com/productimages/GIBRKJER.jpg

The frame is considered plain steel because there's no paint on the frame. Actually, here's a picture:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/itsacosbysweater/IM000675.jpg

Obviously the rack and sleeping bag weren't there during the race and the saddle was different, but that's generally what it looked like.
