I was just on the cycling forum and
found out about Endurox R4 or somesuch.

I am gonna order some since it looks like
a 1 scoop serving would offer twice the
sodium and potassium of Gatorade, as
well as amino acids including 2 grams
of glutamine and a couple of others.

Looks like it would be great, and it comes
in Lemon Lime too, so I don't see how I
could go wrong.

Anyone use this stuff, and if so, do you
use it DURING your rides, like half way out
before returning... and does it do the trick
on a hot day (110 degrees like) to keep you
hydrated?

I just started using it. I was really surprised the next day. Now I chug it after every workout. Helps control my appetite too.

Endurox R4 is strictly a recovery drink. It provides all the essential nutrients needed for a fast recovery and should be consumed immediately after a ride (dont wait until you shower). It should not be used before or during the ride.

As a runner, I used it as a post-run recovery drink. If mixed per directions, it is like milk, but sweeter. It doesn't mix well. You need to use a mixing cup or a blender to get it completely mixed. If you pre-mix it and stick it in the 'frig', don't mix too much at one time. To me, it tastes like the protein degrades after awhile.

But, after all of that, if it was cheaper, I'd use it again, because it did seem to help recovery (or, was it placebo effect?)

Now, I just drink skim milk.

I use it for recovery. The only flavor I like is vanilla. Chocolate is ok but gets tiring. The other flavors do nothing for me. Cost is obviously an issue, as with any of these sports drinks. You can get the same general muscle recovery goodness by eating simple carbs like a bagel, corn flakes, rice milk, white rice, pasta, etc. For proper recovery though, you need a lot of carbs. This is just one of 4 delivery methods I use after every long ride. A lot of people find drinking something after a ride is easier than eating.

Endurox and Accelerade contain way too much sugar for me. I have found that the Hammer products work much better and are better for you. HEED, Perptetuem, Sustained Energy during and Recoverite after.

endurox is going to be cheaper than drinking milk. my $24 jug of endurox has lasted half the summer. if i drank that much milk it would probably cost me at least twice as much. if not more.

Let's see... $24/$4 (price of 1 gallon of skim milk) = 6 gallons

A 28 serving container of Endurox R4 makes 12oz. x 28 servings = 336 oz. divided 128 oz (or 1 gallon) = 2.6 gallons of Endurox R4 (if mixed as directed).

Not quite 6 gallons, eh?

I like Endurox R4 as a recovery drink. Might be okay as a ride drink w/1 scoop per large bottle, or if you're riding easy. I couldn't handle lemon-lime, tho'. Damn the cost, I had to give it away. I generally go for orange or fruit punch. Fruit punch is pretty sweet tasting if that's a problem.

Oh, btw, it works pretty well, IMO.

Carb difference in each isn't close. 2 scoops of Endurox (12 ounces) would be the same as 4 cups (32 ounces) of skim milk. Actually 4.166 cups, 33.333 ounces. Ironically, that would make the cost roughly the same, with Endurox slightly cheaper. But then we drink organic milk, so the cost would be a little off that.

If you weigh 200 pounds and use the recommendation that you eat 1g carb/lb body weight after exercise, that would come out to 17.333 cups of milk. Hope you're not lactose intolerant.

we're at about 3.50 for a 1/2 gallon of milk in NYC, which brings it closer in cost for me. technically it looks like you're still correct. this is what it breaks down to per serving (cheaper in your area for milk obviously):

$24/28 servings = .85 cents a serving
$7(gallon of nyc milk)/10.5 servings = .66 cents a serving

so, i guess for the extra .19 cents i get 52grams of carbohydrates (compare to around 10-12 for milk), 13g of protein (compare to 6-8g for milk) plus all the other stuff endurox has. i still think it works out better for me.

FWIW, there's always Joe Friel's homemade recovery drink, 12 oz skim milk w/5 tablespoons of sugar. Doesn't have the E, C, etc., but I think carbs & protein are the key recovery ingredients.

For best recovery (for me, for me, ok), the high GI foods work better. Milk is way low, which leads to slower rebuilding of glycogen stores. Hey if it works for some people that's great. But if I skimp on recovery food I really feel it the next day, and the day after that.

I just started using it a couple of weeks ago. I take it right after every ride and it seems to be helping. I don't feel as fatigued or lethargic at the end of the week like I used to.

I hope I do better with the lemon lime. If it
tastes like the Gatorade L/L I will be ok.

The buying point I went for was the 220 mg
of sodium and the 110 mg of potassium in each
serving in addition to the protein. I suspect I
will find this stuff to be great for a ride drink.

No way man. Mine still tastes better. That DPS price is on the small can. REI has the big can on sale.

I got my order of Endurox Limon Lime
and was initially apalled at the taste.

It tasted like CHLORDANE the bug or
weed poison smells IMHO.

But, I mix it with Lemon Lime Gatorade
and 1 22 gram scoop of Whey Protein
powder and come up with a palatable
drink that does work wonders for recovery
during a ride.

Next time though, I am gonna buy
the Vanilla flavor. That sounds like
it would be good.

I recommend the stuff though
for its high salt and potassium
content. Higher than any other
recovery drink available that I
know about. And it has Glutamine
and another Amino Acid in it too.

i think the tangy orange is the best tasting energy drink i've had. i actually look forward to drinking it. the key is not to put too much water in...the more diluted it becomes the worse the overall taste.

I found a great way to drink Lemon/Lime
Endurox. It really tastes GREAT and
it packs a punch against thirst, dehydration
and 'bonking.'

I start with a half gallon of Lemon Lime Gatorade
and add 2 large scoops of Lemon Lime Endurox.
To that I add a large scoop of plain Whey Protein
Powder, blend well and put in a Thermal lined
container and take it in the basket on the back
of my Rhoades Car.

I went for a 25 miler today in 101 degree heat
and drank about 6 or 8 ounces of that stuff
about every 20 minutes and never felt thirsty
or depleted of energy in anyway.

And it tastes so damned good. It tastes like
a gourmet smoothie or fountain drink.

I imagine you would get the same effect with
the Fruit punch or the Vanilla flavored Endurox
too if you used a corresponding flavor of Gatorade.

Try it, I guarantee you will love this stuff, and
it works GREAT!
