Commuting - Wtf?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm driving tonight and this guy is on the left hand side of the street bicycling with no lights and his earphones plugged in. On the right side of the street there is a nice and wide bike lane...I think "maybe he is VC or something" but then wouldn't he be just outside the lane? So I pull up, because he was difficult to see, and I say there is a bike lane over there. His response? "Alrighteeeee." and he keeps on biking on that side of the road. I imagine he is posting somewhere about how he avoided yet another confrontation with a cager... though he may not of made it home alive to post anywhere. I'm just wondering WTF?

my mom aggrivates me she wants to travel on the sidewalk and the sidewalk only she will even go against the traffic on the sidewalk and she still believes she is safe because she is on the sidewalk. I try to tell her about the risks of sidewalk riding and how it is annoying to other riders and it is dangerous for her and other users because there is not enough room for a bicycle and other users. I just give up there is no arguing wither her

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink....but you can light a good-sized firecracker right behind him... :D
If I'm feeling in an extra punchy mood and I'm on my bike, I'll sometimes yell "WRONG WAY CYCLIST!!" from across the street. They don't know what in the hell I'm talking about, and I don't try to cross to stop them for a philosophical discussion about how to ride on the road...but it makes me feel like I've made a public service announcement anyway, albeit an obnoxious one.
I don't ever yell from the car though, because then I may just come across as a hostile cager if they don't understand my words/point.
I figure if somebody wants me to teach them something, they'll ask me.
other than that, they're pursuing their own wisdom and mine's not likely to fit them.
Try teaching by simply doing it right yourself. I've been having close calls with a guy who was habitually riding the wrong side of the road, but never tried to correct the guy. This week, he's been riding the correct side, maybe I had some influence there, I hope so.

...even if you hold his head underwater!
Yep. It's amazing how some of us get so set in our ways about stuff that we can't hear a differing viewpoint. Y'all are right. Yelling at the guy, or handing him a stack of statistics, research, and literature aren't going to convince him. Maybe being sideswiped by a car might get him thinking.

Maybe it's just my moonbat tendencies but I could care less. I have no desire to tell anyone how to (or not to) live his\her life. The exception being if this fool would endanger me in any way shape or form. Then it would be time to play chicken.

I would have to disagree DataJunkie. They are endangering you. People associate you with this guy riding on the wrong side and may end up taking their frustrations out on you. By helping others with riding correctly, it might end up helping you later down the road. Just a thought....
Sounds like he is the typical uninformed cyclist. Thinks he should ride like he's a pedestrian.
I wonder if he ever considered this situation?

In that case you\me\we would be better served improving cycling education. A more active method of combating the moronic ride the wrong way riding concept many person's parents taught them.

This guy wasn't in the other lane. He was in my lane. It was a two way with a median and he was biking on the left hand side where I could easily hit him with a bike lane on the other side of my lane! So when I drove past him he was literally right next to my window but only because I swerved into the bike lane to go around him!

Well, he DID say he COULD care less, so it apparently does matter to him.
One early morning I was traveling the wrong way on lower 2nd Avenue. I was feeling relaxed and easy when a cab bolted from his parking space, shocking the Sh-t out of me. I swerved extremely with my eyes shut waiting for the impact which miraculously never occurred. I did have my eyes closed, but it must have been a matter of inches.
This was an easy lesson. Ever since I always go with traffic, as neither I nor anyone else ever fully anticipates movement in the opposite direction. Period.

I was coding most of yesterday. Consequently, my grasp of english slips a bit. I meant I could not care less. :p

Another embicile using the road. What a novelty.

I think you have the right idea, Sidhartha.
