Southern California - how's about some new RED STARS

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This may sound strange but the reason I don’t is I do not believe it is a sustainable business model. To charge a one-time fee will generate inconsistent cash flows. There may come a critical-path time when the new revenue does not exceed expenses.
So, I would rather use the advertiser model. I click the ads at every opportunity. I feel this will provide more consistent and long-term revenue.
If it were an annual fee, I might subscribe.

Done.
Star me.
Even if bf.net folds next month, I've more than received $25 worth of information here. The friends I've made alone are priceless.

He's talking about moi...that's his new pet name for me. I couldn't get him to stop calling me that on Saturday. :p

This is very interesting to me. You would rather do an annual fee rather then a one time payment? What do you think a fair annual fee be? This is something I am considering, but I'm not a big fan of recuring fees.
I don't expect to get rich running this site, but upgraded memberships, googles adsense ads and affiliate links have been paying for the site for 7 years now, it seems to be rather sustainable. Costs to run this site have gone from $25 a month to over $1200 a month. The site was in the red for the first few years I havent had a loss in the last four.

By the way, there's nothing stopping you from making contributions above and beyond $25. I know many members have, and I've been considering it myself. I know I sure do take up more than my share of bandwidth!
No, I said "restless".
Umm...I'm pretty sure it was priceless. It's okay if you don't want to share with the class though. ;) :p

Done. Not sure how long it takes for the star to show up. In fact, I don't recall putting anything into Pay Pal that said my membership name...duh, probably skipped a step. I guess I'll send a PM to Joe with the payment info.
I'm actually pretty ashamed that it took me this long to do it. Joe's done a very cool thing here.

Joe, I think an annual fee is better than a lifetime fee. I am sure I am not going to make any friends around here saying that. (that being said, I did just upgrade mine). However, I would rather continue the ads so your subscriber rates can continue to rise. Also, you are probably getting a 'per click' payment and I do click the ads.
But the point I was trying to make, imagine if television stations offered a one-time fee for ad-free viewing. Initially, gobs of revenue would come in but then it would start to taper yet production costs would rise.
So, Joe, I have no problem with the fee, just continue to give me the ads!!! Perhaps make it optional for Red-Star's. Your success is all of ours success.
[Edit] Hey, where is my star?

doesn't matter to the current red stars if he makes it annual.... we've already paid for 32 years! lol!
my fitness board is $7.00 for 6 months or $12.00 a year if you choose to pay.... but that gets you not only the fitness boards... but ALL the forums on that system....

Thanks for the support!
I'll be doing a minor upgrade to the software in the upcoming weeks, at that point donating members will beable to turn some or all ads on or off. Until then, your stuck without seeing any advertising. :)

I'm so EXCITED!!
But you know what -- I've got my eye on that blue star of Joe's. I sure like blue. I'd chip in an extra fiver to choose my star color :) Oooh, or maybe a beer icon next to my name! Now that defines me as a person!!
[edit] .... <fiddles with monitor knobs> ... or is that a purple star?
Ok, I did it!!
But now what? How do they know who I am? How do I get my special star? It's special majik, known only by the Keebler Elves. You should have your shiny new star delivered straight to your browser within 24 hours.
Thanks for the contribution!
PS - If you don't have it by Friday afternoon flash me a PM and I'll rattle Joe's cage. ;)

Joe, I think an annual fee is better than a lifetime fee.
thomson, if you feel an annual fee is good for you, you can do what some altruistic soul did for the ever popular MERTON..... they paid for his red star, knowing he's a major fun contributor to the site and that he's not cash-laden enough to get one himself.
So.... pick a favorite user who doesn't have a red star and secretly buy them one!
You'll be a hero.

I got my star!! I got my star!!
Oh happy day :)
Additionally, I set a new land speed record today on my favorite part of my commute: 29.2mph on a flat in full work clothes with a full trunk pack. Is it the new trekking bar setup? Is it the tune up that I gave the bike last night? No.....
It's the STAR!!!
You look very nice in red Brian, it's soooo becoming. :)
