Foo - My Little Girl's First Birthday..........

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Is this Friday. I rediscoved a love for biking and my health this past year. I have lost 50 lbs and done some crazy sh*t like ride 160 miles in one day. Blah, Blah, Blah, I know. The question is; I want to get my little girl, who is yet not walking, this Giant Trike (http://www.giant-bicycle.com/us/030.000.000/030.000.006.asp?model=11365), in Pink of course. I think it would be cool to get her first bike on her first birthday. What do you think? Later.

you realize that she won't be able to use for a very long time, don't you? why don't you wait until she can really enjoy it? AND get a kick out of getting it. That "face" that kids get when they get something they really want is priceless. At one year old, that "face" may not be joy....you may have to change a diaper....he he.

congrats on your little one's b-day. you sound like a proud papa!

Do it man! Just use plenty of Duct Tape to hold her on. :)

That seems like an awfully hard object with lots of corners and pokey parts for a 1 year old to me. CycleMagic makes a good point too.....it would be better to wait until her face will light up when she sees it rather than it being something she can't really enjoy right now.

FYI, my 21 month old, who has been walking for a year now, has a tough time on trikes. We just got her a $10 plastic trike from Target or somewhere. She likes it, but still is too short to do the pedals. Be PATIENT, man!!

Just buy her a bunch of cycling videos and play 'em instead of that Wiggles garbage...

Or if Litespeed is not your slice of birthday cake.... you could always commission a Vanilla trike with custom Phil Wood hubs...

....though with Vanilla lead times, your girl will get to enjoy it probably when she's about 11 years old.... :D

That made me laugh. The boys on my block could trash that trike so fast from regular use your head would spin.

Hey, if you got the dough, there's a custom gold-plated crapper out there somewhere for you.... probably....

Hmmm...... a good idea came from explody pup? It makes me quite leary as it may be yet another scheme originating from his moonbase....but it does "sound" like a good idea!

Not mad. Just watering the yard and pulling weeds. Got to get things looking pretty for the big party on Saturday.

I just thought that pink trike was sooo cute and perfect! I like the little infant jersey idea. Maybe one that says My Daddy can turn it up to 400 watts!!!!!!!! If the trike is out then I am off to Toys-R-Us later today for some ideas. Later.

Siu, aham knows what's up. He's a funny cat. Back in May he had never ridden more than 50 miles in a day and then proceded to drag my lazy self through his first century, yakking it up all the way.

He's just dipping his toes into The Foo, it seems.... don't get him too wound up! :)

Okay cool! Well everyone is welcome in foo with open arms. We are just....just.....we're awesome, man!. :D

But I do think she may be kind of young to appreciate it. But we all know it's really YOU that wants it - hee hee. Too bad they didn't make a bigger one, huh? ;)

Why not try likeabike (http://www.likeabikeusa.com/). It'll not only develop her sense of balance as she begins to walk, but she'll get into the idea of cycling. I know several kids who have them and they love them.

If YOU can bear to wait for delivery have a look at a Early Rider http://www.urchin.co.uk/catalog/toys-and-games/kids-trikes-bikes-scooters/p_36700.html, we got ours from a UK company called Urchin. it looks alot like the Likeabike (see above). Very nicely made and a bit different. We still use our Bike-Tutor (front mounted carrier) for longer family rides and this as next step towards riding. Look up first bikes on this forum and you will see a number of people advise this sort of thing, ie childs bike with the pedals removed so they can 'paddle' them selves along while learning balance. lots of fun.

Get a bike trailer and haul her around. Fresh air for her, more exercise for you.

I have two girls (7 and 3) and the fun we had together going to the bike store to buy their first bikes was something I'll remember for a long time. Just a thought, but maybe waiting a year or two might be worth it.

I remember how happy I was when I bought my daugher her first bike. She was thrilled when she got it. Sadly though she doesn't ride it anymore right now. Hopefully she'll get into it more when her siblings get older. One can hope.

I would wait, she is only one which means that very nice present of yours will not be used in the short term future.

Try finding a used one... none to be had anywhere!

ok foo nation. time has come around again. my little girl is turning two. is that old enough for that pink giant trike....HERE. (http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bikes/kids/598/24444/) later.

Two or three is the age for a trike. Personally, I prefer one where I can lock the steering straigt ahead and push with a handle from behind until they learn to ride. Trying to carry a stubborn two year old and a trike home from a walk is not that fun.

I guess it depends on how tall she is. I got mine this thing when she was 16 months. She can't reach the pedals, but she loves "Fred Flintstoning" it around! I like its low center of gravity so it's harder to tip and when she does, she doesn't fall far. I put some blocks on it and now, at almost 18 months, she's just about able to push the pedals through a rotation.

And it's pink, to boot!

As for the Litespeed Trike... alas, they don't make them anymore and you just can't find any used ones. Much to my wife's relief. Of course, this just means she'll get the cool fancy bikes when she gets older. :D Just look at that smile!!

aham, if your soon-to-be 2-year-old daughter was cool, she'd be building up her own fixie from parts found in a dumpster, you know. brakeless, of course.

get her some non-conformist conformist Rapha gear to go with that fixie.

Go for a Burley D'Lite trailer, one of the best things we ever bought. Plenty of time for a trike, bikes, and all sorts of cool bike stuff. If you buy stuff to early, they tend to loose excitement, I still have a "Choppa" hanging in our garage that I bought for my 4 yr old a couple years ago. But the Burley Piccolo was a huge hit. He's been off training wheels for a couple months now and wants a mini road bike, but he's still a few years away from that.
