View Full Version : Cyclist Battering Pedestrians
This story has been in the Bee this week. (http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/story/6190406p-7145257c.html) Seems some idiot on a bike has been riding through Midtown and randomly punching pedestrians in the face and then riding off. The pedestrian-punchees have all been female and there have been complaints that the Sac. P.D. hasn't taken their reports very seriously.
Punk.

One woman, who asked that her name not be used, said she was swatted on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper by a passing bicyclist. The attack occurred at 7:30 a.m. on Riverside Boulevard, south of Broadway, on Jan. 14.
Folks have been killed for less than this in Detroit. In my neighborhood this clown would receive a "Darwin" award very quickly.

The "Man Bites Dog" interest/humor that sprang to mind when I first spotted this thread, dried up very quickly when reading the article.
This creep will get what's coming to him.

I'd like to punch the guy for giving cyclists a bad name!
But I'd especially like to beat him within an inch of his life for unprovoked attacks on women! (Call me old fashioned!)

At first it bugged me that he was doing this in areas through which I regularly commute to work. And then I thought, maybe I'll have the opportunity to catch this guy and give him a taste of his own medicine.

And give him a good poke in the eye from me. We don't need this type of publicity!!

L8R Nope not old-fashioned. I TOTALLY AGREE.

This is the side of it that really bugs me. I have said for some time that society is way too tough on petty crime and not nearly tough enough on violent crime. This is exactly the sort of thing they should be taking seriously.

Personally I get a little tired of hearing things like this. For one thing, assault is assault, irrespective of the method of transport someone uses to get to and from the crime scene. The fact that he's a cyclist should not even come into it, he deserves years in prison simply for the fact that he's assaulting people. "Giving cyclists a bad name" isn't even relevant as far as I'm concerned.
Secondly, anyone who is stupid enough to stereotype all cyclists on the basis of the actions of one lunatic is not the sort of person I want to impress. I couldn't care less if I have a bad name with someone like that.

Yes but these are the people who will door you because you might be the guy.
Chris L is right. Yes, it is a stupid stereotype.
And no, I probably wouldn't really give the guy a beating if I saw him. I'd love to do that but it's just Walter Mittying on my part: The Bike Vigilante of Midtown!
I hope that if I do see this guy on my commute I'll call the cops and stick around to make sure the victim is okay and be available to testify.

Or are they people who will door you first, then attempt to use the stereotype as an excuse afterward (as opposed to the usual "I didn't see him"). I'm sorry, but that's no excuse. In any case, as far as I'm concerned, assault is far more serious than giving anyone a "bad name".

But never will because there is neither money nor glory in stopping this kind of crime. The money is in writing traffic tickets and the "glory" is in making high-profile drug busts of some poor schmoe who's growing a little weed in his window box. (BTW, I don't use drugs, not even alcohol, and I'm about as conservative as they come, but this so-called "drug war" that "my" government has been waging against its own citizens for decades is an expensive, preposterous farce with no genuine purpose beyond ensuring the constant growth of an already out-of-control law enforcement "industry.")
Our prisons are overcrowded and well over 50% of those doing hard time are up on non-violent drug possession (not even trafficking) charges.
Now, ask me what I really think ;)

Lighten up guys! I think a2psyklnut was being facetious when he said that, meaning the guy should get what he deserves. The stereotyping, however, is serious, as people do overeact to that type of thing, and paint us all with the same brush, in the heat of the moment.
Let's hope he gets caught, and is dealt with properly and severly.

:) I still say this guy needs a good old fashion butt kicking. This person is a women beater and likes to pray on people that are weaker then him. All just for his enjoyment. This guy needs to be stopped. The next time he strikes he may have a baseball bat or a gun.
Update: (http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/story/6196809p-7151554c.html) It seems that now, due to the publicity of the Bee story and the local tv newscasts, Sac P.D. is beginning to take this a bit more seriously. Troubling that quite a few people seem to have been attacked by this punk.
A local bike messenger said he'd been stopped and questioned 3 times by the boys in blue. But, like the rest of us, he said he just wants to see this guy stopped too.

It would be pretty easy to take this guy out and claim he ran in to you while fleeing the scene of an attack. I sympathize with Chris' point, however, I'd do it.
Update. (http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/story/6213870p-7168500c.html) Police have identified a suspect, searched his apartment, and seized his bikes. He remains at large, however.

So why don't they got to Large and arrest him? :roflmao:
Seriously though, around here the police would have waited at his apartment for him to return if he wasn't there.
Yeah, I think they tried that: "He obviously saw something on television and split," said his landlady, who asked not to be identified. Based on an anonymous tip, police began watching the yellow house Saturday night. Officers camped out on the stairs of a neighbor's house all night, but Jiron never showed up, Risley said.
Oh, those cwafty cwiminals! :)
Update! (http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/story/6361244p-7314220c.html) They've caught the suspect in Des Moines. (Maybe he was training for RAGBRAI....);)
