Huge huge fan of the book and J Heller's other fiction, just wondered if anyone who has read the book and seen the film has any advice as to whether or not to watch the film version?

Perhaps the funniest book ever written.
The movie is not really worthwhile watching as it falls short of the book by some way. It seems to have been made in the late 1960's or early 1970's as it has that (anti-Vietnam) vibe about it. Very difficult to make a film about it anyway IMO.
Catch 22 was a great book and a decent movie. I tried to read Something Happened and couldn't get through it.

i've never seen the movie but i heard it was pretty much a (valiant effort yet a) failure , which is understandable.
if you think catch-22 is good though, you should read gravity's rainbow. it ****s on catch-22 the way catch-22 ****s on slaughterhouse five.
The movie is very difficult to follow unless you have already read the book. I did it both ways, watched the movie, didn't understand it, read the book, then watched the movie again.
Bit of side information: My father flew one of the B-25 bombers in the movie and can been seen on screen for a brief moment in the opening sequence as the bombers take off. He had the opportunity to buy one of the B-25's after the fliming concluded. Still kicks himself for not doing so (along with selling a few other aircraft he did own once upon a time).

Yikes, Pynchon is opaque as a welding glass.

Yikes, Pynchon is opaque as a welding glass.and not a little pretensious, as far as I can tell, from the 3 I've read by him. Vonnegut may not be as artsy-fartsy as the others, because he has fun and doesn't take himself too seriously, I guess. Also, he's written about 10x as much as the other two combined.

I've never heard of this book. What's the main character's name?

It's a sly wink of acknowlegement that the answer to the original question was already known and that the question itself was meant to be self referential.
