Hey everyone,
I'm in Dover, PA. I work in Mechanicsburg.
Hi, siz. . .
Some nice evening/weekend rides out of Mechanicsburg if you're interested in sticking around after your work day. Check the Harrisburg Bike Club website - http://www.harrisburgbicycleclub.org/ - or shoot me a pm if you have questions.
Welcome!

I'm from the Lehigh Valley, but I was in W-B on Saturday to pick up my new custom bike from Rich Adams at Around Town Bikes. Rich and Tom run a great shop up there.

I live in Wilkes-Barre.... And one of these days I may convince myself to splurge on one of Rich's bikes... In the interim, I'll just have to keep going in to buy the small stuff when I need it. In fact, I think I'll drop in tomorrow to get a chain.
Minichamp31, what kind of riding do you do?
Is anyone doing the Eastern PA 200k in quakertown? I'm tryin to see if I can get a ride from philly.

Looks like fun. Do you know anyone else planning on riding it? I could possibly be persuaded. I live a short train ride from Philly.

One other guy pmed me, he's got a small car but no bike rack. If we can't get one I'd definitely be fine with takin a train or just riding out there. I also have to ask some other people at the bike co-op on sunday evening, so I'll let ya know if more people want to come.

Sounds good. I have a car and a bike rack although if we could manage without using either I'd prefer to go that route.

The Harrisburg Bike Club scheduled evening rides begin next Monday, the 2nd - will you still be in town?
If you're looking to just get out for a quick spin, head over to the riverfront. Starting at Front and Market, take the bike path all the way up to Division St., head south back to the Walnut St. bridge (the walking bridge), cross over to City Island, loop around the path on the island, head back over to Front St., back up to the path, head South into the Shipoke area and loop north again to Market St.
I don't know the condition of the path down along the river - whether it's been swept or not - so you might fare better staying up on the path in riverfront park. When I lived downtown I rode this loop quite a bit - quick and dirty, about 8 miles for the whole loop. Just head out and keep looping it til the sun sets :)
I coach a Spinning class at the Y (Front and North Streets) at noon a couple of days a week. If you can't get outside and want to get a workout in, stop by on a guest pass.
Have fun; pm if you want to find a group ride next week (possibly Saturday as well).

Unfortunately I'm leaving friday :( I saw all the HBC rides start next week!
I will definitely head out on the greenway though tomorrow(still got some saddle sore that needs healin'). I'm assuming the riverfront you're talking about is the greenway I keep hearing about. Thanks again! I hope this weather persists!

Actually, you might be hearing about the Capital Area Greenbelt - a ride you'd be better off doing on a hybrid. The loop I'm talking about is all riverfront - all the way north to the city line at Division St., south to the line in Shipoke, and over and around City Island. No way possible to get turned around in direction :)

Beth, I think that is part of the Greenbelt.
Finding a ride for you, branman1986, might be a bit of a challenge from center city. Do you have a car? I think a Clark's valley ride is a better representation of our area. And once there, there is no chance of getting lost. Beautiful scenery along the creek, but has low-volume yet hi speed traffic.
If you could be there outside of "rush hour", I think it would be fun. The route is here (http://www.routeslip.com/routes/16457)
Mapquest directions to are here... Should be plenty of parking at the intersection of 225 and 325, as this creek is popular with trout fishermen.

I ended up riding north up Market Street in traffic then cut west to the river and headed down the greenbelt/riverfront path, past a few bridges, then when the path ran out I took a left and went back on Market street. I did the loop a bunch of times and it was great.

Im pretty new to mountain biking, have done a lot of bmx in the past at chicky's rock in lancaster and some local places. Switchin over to mountain biking and looking for some trails and stuff to start off on. Ive ridden at pinchot park just around the lake, no real fun terrain tho. nearly died there over the spring break, would have been a shame.
Im lookin to buy my own bike, not a new one tho. I broke my brother's rim and am not allowed to ride his bike anymore.

Beth, I know that you are a member of the Harrisburg Bike Club and I recently read an article in the Patriot-News that listed the top personal trainers in the mid state area. The top spinning instructor was a lady named Beth, also a member of the Harrisburg Bike Club, is that by any chance you? If so, congratulations.

Air Force heh? My kid got out two weeks ago after 4 1/2 and a year in Korea. Now he's home and helping me get ready for the Cat Classic MTB Race up near Williamsport PA.
The event features a MTB, an Off Road Run and a MTB/Run Duathlon.
Featuring a College MTB Team Challenge too.
Gnarly and beautiful course. Great Prizes. $2,000 Exp/Pro money. Great spectator course.

Yup, that was me - it was a very nice honor from a great group of people I work with at the Y.
Spending most of my time behind the camera or on digital retouching of images (the day job that supports my cycling habit ;) ), I had to get pretty far out of my box to do those photos. It was fun, though, and was humbling to be considered in such a talented and diverse group of fitnes pros.
Thanks, papedaler - perhaps we'll run into one another on the road somewhere this year!

My suggestion would be to do both. Riding alone will make you stronger mentally and physically - no one to pull you along through tough spots; and group riding will teach you all sorts of riding tips and handling skills. Hang in the middle of the group, watch and listen. You'll pick up a lot!
Check the websites for both the Harrisburg Bike Club and the Lancaster Bike Club; they post their ride schedules.

You won't be the only "kid" there - the age range is pretty wide for the group rides. It really is all about the bike!

So I finally got my bike! Its pretty great so far. I dont know if I should try to find a group to ride with or just ride by myself for a long time and get in better shape. I live in Lancaster and Harrisburg. The Harrisburg Bike Club has a number of really nice ride for "beginners". My adult daughter is a beginner so we often go on these rides. They are great little rides with really nice people.
The club web site (http://www.harrisburgbicycleclub.org/) says “Introductory Rides - This is that beginner's ride you've been looking for. Nice and easy, no one gets left behind, and all questions are welcomed along with new riders. These rides are perfect for families, with the kids on that bike seat or on their own bike. The Wednesday night rides always leave at 6:00pm and are 8-10 miles long at an 8-10 mph pace. They have resumed.”
If you are an early riser there is also a Sunday Morning ride that starts at City Island and goes all around the city. Since it’s before 8 am the streets are empty and you get a taste of riding in downtown. There is a breakfast at a local restaurant after the ride. We’ve been on this one too and it’s a blast no mater how experienced you are or aren’t.
Go to their web site (http://www.harrisburgbicycleclub.org/)and click on he newsletter archives to download the newsletter. All the details are in there.
Yo don't have to be a member to ride with us. You just need a bike and a helmet. Hope to see you on one of the rides.
Thanks i'll look into both of those...

I live in Lancaster and Harrisburg. One more ride to look out for is the "Greenbelt" ride. It's a big ride (hundreds of riders - many young). It goes around Harrisburg on a bike path called the "Greenbelt". It is really a fun day with snack stops and food at the end. Go to http://www.caga.org/tourdebelt/TourHome.html for details.

If it's nice next Wednesday we will probably ride then. I don't often get to the Sunday morning rides, but I like them.
If you are a little faster there are rides out of Mechanicsburg High on Saturday and Sunday that I like.
Maybe I'll meet you when spring REALLY gets here. You'll know it's me - I ride a red Trek with wodden fenders and a bike license plate that says "Mike"
Royersford PA here, about 15 minutes from King of Prussia. Im pretty new to cycling and have stuck mainly to fairly easy trails like the Thun and Perkiomen. Anyone near ride those?
I'm in Phoenixville/Spring City. I'm also new and ride on those trails.

Yup, frequently - one of my favorite loops is out of Hershey thru Palmyra, Cornwall, Cornwall Furnace, up the mountain and down into Mt. Gretna. Depending on the group, an occasional breakfast ride with a stop at LaSorrelle is an option. Otherwise, it's out and back.
The State Police Metric (next Saturday, the 28th) route goes thru Gretna. Wanna ride?
