Whoa, just spotted these regional subforums. I know there's an army of us out there, let's hear from you. :)

Edit: duh, I should check in to my own thread. :D I live in Washington Heights, right by the GWB. Most of my in-season riding is out across the Bridge. When it's colder I'll ride in Central Park often (fewer people, much safer and more pleasant that way!).

Checking in!

I ride around northern Queens mostly when in NYC (closest to my part of Long Island). :D

Man, I'm so used to skipping the Riding Partners forum, I never even noticed til it was pointed out in Foo that it was replaced by this one. Hi, I'm Catch and I ride around the block because the tracking device on my ankle won't let me ride any further.

Nice location Oboeguy...

I live in Clinton Hill Brooklyn. If any of you ever see me in prospect park, I'm the lanky long haired guy trying to race on a silver specialized sequoia with a rack on it (ha), feel free to say hi.

Yo from Astoria.

I ride my pimped out, ancestral red Raleigh 3spd very slowly between Brooklyn and Queens, soon to other parts. No car. Other bikes in various stages of completion.

Biking in Astoria is fairly pleasant, but south of the Pulaski is filled with many "HOLY @#$%" moments. Getting used to it.

Live in Asswhoria, commute to Morris Park (with yeah all the general weekend trips to Manhattan and Brooklyn and one of these days... I swear... I'll visit my grandparents on LI's North Shore). Bald girl with a blue bag riding on the Triboro and in the South Bronx- say hello.

Oh yes, and to the hipper-than-thou guy riding a fixie and wearing sunglasses (on a cloudy day) who I saw turn onto Bruckner Blvd this morning from St. Ann's place, I am totally laughing at you. Riding on the sidewalk because you're scared to pass a delivery truck is lame. Also, that sidewalk is in terrible repair; it's way more dangerous than the road. (Witness, one split chin from the days before I knew better than to take it.)

11201 is where I start out. Where I wind up, up to the wind. You'll likely never see me in the park. I hate riding in the park. Makes me feel like a dog in a dog run. Likely I've been spotted by someone here on BF; we've probably shared a dirty look or choice word or two. I'm not as mean as I appear though... I'm like the nicest guy there is :) until you piss me off. A lot of other cyclists piss me off ...sometimes I think I prefer 'Cagers,' actually even though I'm close to murdering one of them at least once a day. There definitely should be less of both. (None of which I find here on BF!)

I've been away all summer, and was devestated to see that the South path of the George Washington Bridge is closed. Any idea when it is due to re-open? The stairs are the North side are no fun.

That pretty much sums it up.

Manhattan - near West Houston Street where it's FLAT.

Lots of riding on the Westside Waterfront Greenway. Sometimes I do Central Park (for the hills) but I don't actually like it.:o

Live in E. Williamsburg, was riding fixed for the last year (w/ a front brake). Been riding a lot more lately, esp. out east in Queens and towards Rockaway. See my post in riding partners: looking for a reasonably paced partner to go on longer rides to Nyack or L.I.

Living on the west side 10023. Usually ride the west side greenway or CP. Crossed the GWB last week for the 1st time last week. Those stairs suck big time. I'll be sticking to driving the bike across until they reopen the south walkway.

i used to live near there. and you're right, it was really nice having those riding options within a mile or two of each other. i especially enjoyed it coming back from a NJ ride...because going all the way back to brooklyn (like i do now) after a long ride kinda sucks.

Check. I live in the East Village & do loops around CP a couple nights a week and ride around Manhattan & Brooklyn. Very occasional rides up the Palisades & 9W. I'm doing the upcoming MS Ride & Tour de Bronx. I don't race, but I'm sloowly getting faster.

I live in Queens. I typically do the Shea Stadium, Flush Meadow, Forest Park Route.

Just tried the TA century, bailed at 50 when the ride went past my house. My excuse: Everyone has a better/lighter bike.

I hear you, but I still complain sometimes about being so far from the bridge! I never thought I would say this, but it would be so nice to be able to just go out the door and be in New Jersey. :D

jersey definitely has some better cycling opportunities, i agree. i think for me, though, if i ever move out of the city it's going to be a move to a place with fantastic cycling. northern california or colorado or some place like that. i long for mountains, rural roads, considerate drivers, nicer weather, cleaner air, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to move to Jersey! I'm just saying it would be nice, while I'm living in NYC, to have closer good riding. My home state of West Virginia has some of the best riding you can find. I'll be there in two weeks!

okay, checking in now, from the far far away land of marine park, the furthest point of brooklyn from, ...anything, and everything. I work at paragon's cycling department in union square so i live, talk and breath bikes, and best of all I do a nice 12 mile commute back and forth virtually everyday. I had a 05 specialized langtser, 05 Giant cypress, and an 07 trek 1000, but now I currently ride an 06 scott s50 and have a cannondale track frame thats getting built up to ride asap. Im also getting into racing, so you might see me there on the start line or maybe off on the sideline watching.

Howdy, living in W'burg, daily commute to South Street Seaport area over the williamsburg bridge. Usually ride in the parks and westside hwy on the weekends. Getting my first road bike (since 1984) in a week and getting out to NJ for some longer rides after that.

Cheers!

Man - I rode around a little this morning. Ugh. They wouldn't even let people cross the streets - totally closed down 50th street north and south. I got yelled out because I was holding my bike with my legs. Whatever.

Take the FDR. It's usually backed up w/ traffic enough that you can ride w/ traffic.

Air
09-20-06, 06:26 AM
Someone else stopped there mentioned that. You mean actually get onto the highway? Or the service road that runs underneath it at places? You know they even stopped the subways from going north and south?

jyossarian
09-20-06, 01:22 PM
Well, they were planning on closing down the FDR from 63rd to the bridge today, but if you watch it during rush hour, it's usually jam packed enough that you can hop on for an exit or two and go faster than traffic. I wouldn't recommend it since there's a riding path right next to it, except from about 38th to 59th St.

Looking forward to getting back on a back. Used to ride a lot when I was younger, mostly on hybrid-style bikes. Thinking of getting a road bile with a little more forgiving geometry (maybe a Trek Pilot or Specialized Allex or Sequoia). Mostly planning on doing the greenways and central park loop, I'd prefer to avoid the streets as much as possible. Is a road bike tough to use on NYC streets? I'm worried that handling/vision/bad roads could be a problem. Would it be better to get a road-style flat-bar, like a Cirrus or Trek 7500? Also, are any other Manhattan stores besides Bicycle Habitat having good end of season sales right now? Thanks a lot, looking forward to getting back on a bike...

Zac here, from Flatbush. I met a bunch of you during the TA century a few weeks ago. I'm also the guy that had both arms in casts last year that you may have seen walking in PP.

I mostly ride in PP during the week whenever I can catch the time. On weekends, it's usually out to NJ and Nyack/Piermont, or lately I've been going east along the Belt and then branching out. Long Beach wasn't a bad ride, but flat as a pancake, and pretty much alone unless you hit up the boardwalk there. I saw one other serious biker on my 50 or so mile trip.

jyossarian
09-23-06, 10:51 PM
Tubby, a road bike is fine for riding on the chewed up streets as long as you've got strong wheels. I'm not sure if I'd trust low spoke count wheels for everyday riding and commuting especially if you're a heavier rider, but if you have 36h, 3x rear and the rim is strong, you should be fine.
