This is my first week in NC - I have been relocated to RTP.

Any good clubs around here? My riding has slowed down for the last few months and I want to start riding again!

almost too many clubs

In CH, depends on what you want.

the tricyclists (http://www.tricyclists.com/) are v friendly and a good developmental racing club with regular group rides. Their level of male racers goes from cat 5 to cat 3/4
doughnutboys (doughnutboyracing.com) are friendly, but less well organized. Their level of racers covers the full spectrum.
franklin street cycles (no idea on web page) tend to be the harder core racers

there's also racing clubs through all star in raleigh, cycling spoken here in cary, duke, and unc.

finally, the tarwheels are a friendly all-inclusive, non-racing club.

Happy to answer more specifics on these as I know them. For a racer trying to get back to shape, recommend the tricyclists.

seems like most of the good rides are in Chapel Hill...

last time I went home I was really disappointed and didn't do hardly any riding and couldn't get in touch with anyone. There any rides close to Raleigh(North Raleigh, just north of Crabtree) that do long brisk base to tempo rides over the winter? I should be home from around the 28th through the 31st. Any recommendations?

I think the gyros are close by, but I didn't see a ride schedule...how do I find out ride times?
The tricycles seem like the best bet, but they're a fair ways away.

thanks in advance for any help

Does anyone know which group sponsors Night-time rides on the American Tobacco Trail? All I know is there was a group that did this last year on the Durham side of the trail. I'd like to join them if possible. Thanks for any help.

Under the Stars on the ATT
Looking for a unique way to experience the American Tobacco Trail? Every Thursday at 7:30, a group of cyclists sets out from The Bicycle Chain in Durham (formerly the Durham Cycle Center) for a ride down the ATT. This is a no-drop (you won't be left behind) ride at a social pace, and is for anyone interested in biking camaraderie, fresh evening air, and maybe burning off a little dinner. The only requirements are working front and rear lights on your bike. For directions to The Bicycle Chain http://thebicyclechain.com/map.cfm?StoreID=3
If you have any questions about this ride, contact the [Durham] Bike & Ped listserve http://groups.yahoo.com/group/durhambikeandped/

I'd call The Bicycle Chain before showing up: (919)286-2453 - I think participation is spotty this time of year.

I go to State but am from Asheville and mountain bike. Right now all I really bike is the Lake Johnson area. Are there any trails in the area that are more technical and jump oriented that resemble mountain trails.

I have just started riding again and am really enjoying it although I just bought a cheaper 21 speed "comfort" bike for right now. I live in N.Raleigh out by Falls Lake. I have recently learned there is an NCDOT maintained bike route that goes from the mountains to the ocean and would love to get in shape to ride it. I'm pretty ignorant on how to train or equip myself for it though. I'm a full time entertainer so my schedule and hours can be odd and varying therefore I'm not a great joiner but fortunately my daytime hours are often my own. Plenty of places to ride around here I'm discovering. I'm looking forward to talking with people more experienced and skilled than myself and learning some things about riding in this area and across the state.

I currently live out in north Raleigh, past 540 near the Trek store.

The majority of my riding is the daily commute to work, about 10 miles each way towards downtown. Occasionally get out for some longer rides on the weekend, but haven't really gotten into the group thing yet, but might be intersted in checking it out. I prefer not to drive, and don't have bike racks. Anyone know of groups that leave from my general area?

The gyros left from the trek store today. Leave from there or Pleasant union elementary. Also road dogs at Blue Jay point. Theres the slow spokes, don't know much about where they leave around n raleigh.

Plenty of options just pick your speed...

Hey guys and gals,
Checked out the link tha jack posted above and seen the Durham Comprehensive Bicycle Transportation Plan which I thought was great! I just moved to Durham from New Hampshire and have been finding out more and more cool stuff about the area as the days go by...I just wanted to say hello and urge the forum members from Durham to check out and support the bike plan that was presented to the Durham council. I just sent them an email supporting the plan and hope many of you do as well as it would make Durham a great place and differentiate itself if they make downtown Durham very bike friendly. How awesome would it be to take a 5, 10, 15, 20 mile ride to downtown Durham and park your bike to have an wonderful cup of coffee, have lunch at a funky place, watch a ball game, or just go to work and never have to worry about where to park your bike or not finding enough room on the road to ride in the streets of downtown!

So you know, the ATT (~7 miles paved another 5 miles including unpaved portions) joins up with the North-South Greenway (another ~8 miles paved). We're lucky enough to live a few blocks from the northern ost tip of the N-S Greenway, and are able to do a 40 mile ride (roundtrip), almost completely off roads, with plenty of places to stop for coffee.

Welcome to Durham... Enjoy!

Any one out there do the TTA survey? I just did it yesterday morning...I urge you guys living in the Triangle area to participate as it gives us bikers an opportunity to voice our opinion on having bike accomodations made for us on buses...I also threw some comments on there about the train system plan that came to a halt...Hopefully with more and more community interest, we can really push for this plan...

Today was very nice indeed...Everyone was walking/running/riding on the ATT...I took my time again and let the weather sink into my skin...:) I usually bring a wind jacket for the AM and pack the jacket in the backpack for the ride home in the PM

i am new owner of a recumbent, training for 11 day ride in texas next month--looking for 30-60- mile rides with little traffic, few turns (i'm afraid of lots of intersections)
hills are fine
any suggestions??

You might want to consider going to the Capital Area Greenway and riding. I cant think of a route near you in Cary that would be suitable.

You could park at Crabtree Valley Mall and get on the greenway right there and go probably close to 30 miles if you do all the greenway and you'll only have to actually get off the greenway once in a VERY light traffic neighborhood.

You might also consider a route from Cycling Spoken Here in Apex if you don't want to go to the greenway but I think even those routes may have more traffic than you would be comfortable with.

I live in Clinton... about halfway between Raleigh and Wilmington. I work in RTP, and commute to the triangle 3 days a week. I used to be an avid MTB'er. Went to school at UNC, so know all the old trails in that area. Have bought bikes from Performance, Franklin Street Cycles, the Clean Machine, and REI. The Clean Machine gets my vote for #1 LBS. I stopped MTBing when I graduated and started sitting at a desk --- so, now I'm an UberClyde looking to drop some weight. I'm just getting into road cycling and having a ball riding my new 2006 Novara Randonee.

Anybody else from the Clinton area?

I lived there for a while in the 90's and wouldn't go back for anything - not that the town would have me back either.

Well, you should definitely come out to the co-op grand opening on Sunday.
It's from 1-6, with a potluck cookout, bike polo, and a downtown cruise.
There are quite a few fg/ss riders in Durham, and some will be there, I can assure you!
We'll be glad to help you build up your track frame once we get established.

It's not too bad. My wife's family lives here, and mine did live in Wilmington, though my Mom just moved up here to be closer to her new grandbaby. My wife is a Family Med Doc and opened a solo-practice here. She wanted to be in a small town and be close to family. So here we are. The commuting really blows, but since it's only a few times a week, it's livable.

SATURDAY, APRIL 21
City of Suspects II

$5 race / $5 show, show free w/race entry.
All proceeds to the Durham Bike Co-op (www.durhambikecoop.org)
Prizes generously provided by Black Sheep Cycles (http://www.blacksheepcycles.com/), Charlotte, NC

1:00 p.m. - Registration outside the Suntrust Building
(tallest building), downtown Durham.

9:00 p.m. - Show at Bull City HQ (723 N Mangum St) w/
Gun Metal Black, Idea of Beauty, The Lineage.

So here's the deal: instead of an all-out race this one's gonna be a sort of deranged omnium:
Test your prowess, be prepared for the absurd. All events weighted evenly; to the victors, the glory ...

The Events:

-Tractor Pull: A drag race. Two easychairs on wheels, with someone sitting in each. Tow yours across the finish line as fast as you can. Format: Time trial.

-Crooked Crank Racing: Two laps around a track, 2-4 riders per heat. Only your cranks are at a 90 degree angle instead of the usual 180. Format: Time trial; single elimination semi-final and final for top four times.

-Bike Polo: Street (axles of evil etc.) rules. Three people per team, teams chosen randomly. Format: single elimination tourney.

-Hill Sprints: Ride to the top of a parking garage as fast as you can. Do something devious of our choosing. Ride back down again. Format: Time trial.

-Huffy Toss: Some spin hammer-throw style. Some underhand it. Whatever: just toss that thing as far as you can. Format: distance, not decapitating your friends.

-Tube Change: Change out an innertube: quickly and without blowing it out. Format: Time trial.

-Footdown: Tiebreaker as needed. Ride around in a circle w/your opponent(s) and try to push them off their bike. Dabbing (putting a foot down) or riding out of the circle eliminates you.

*Track events: So that all can compete, track stands, backwards circles, and skids will not scored for the omnium. However, time and interest permitting, these events will be held between bands during the show.

I need to get back out and do another Gyro ride.

The Road Dogs ride out that way as well but theyre considerably faster than the Gyros.

Some other rides to consider:

Slow Spokes (http://www.slowspokes.net)
Selma Cyclepaths (http://www.selmacyclepaths.org)

Cycling Spoken Here has a bunch of rides at both stores as well. Here's a link to their website.
Cycling Spoken Here (http://cyclingspokenhere.com/page.cfm?PageID=327)

I dont think any of the other shops around have weekly rides. The Trek Store has some rides occasionally I think. Im not sure about their schedule.

Best rides in the Raleigh area tho are the Selma Cyclepath rides. The area is desolate so traffic is minimal, sag support on every ride and fluids provided at the rest stops, not to mention a great bunch to ride with. Speeds range from 12-20+.

Depends on where you live and how much you want to ride. I live almost in Benson and was routinely driving to BJP and Cary to ride over the winter.

The drive to the Cyclepath rides is pretty mild with minimal traffic and again, depending on where you live, it might be faster to come through back roads anyway.

The Slow Spokes rides are good rides too.. they're usually faster than the advertised pace BUT there is always a group riding at the advertised pace. Just a handful of people show up for the rides that are faster.

Coming down to Cary for an interview in a couple of weeks and am trying to look up an old friend.

Cary was the head mechanic at Full Moon Vista up here in Rochester but moved down to (I believe) the UNC area last year with his wife an newborn. His wife was going to school there and I'm guessing he's probably still turning wrenches. If anyone knows what shop he's at I'd appreciate if you could forward the info on to me (or tell him there's a stalker on the forum :D) and he can get in touch with me directly.

Thanks,
Steve
