Southern California - Who are you? Where do you ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Um... you wouldn't want to host a Bike Maintenance Party at the same time, would you?
I'm just askin'... cuz, err... M.E. wants to know!
Well, ya just never know! As I get to know peeps, I may indeed extend some invites. The Ribfest is usually between 40 and 80 people, depending on where it's being hosted that year, how many folks they can accomodate, how many can make it on the proposed date, etc...etc...etc... :)

Wow, I figured that would be something to be proud of here. I know I'd be. Hmmm, maybe I should host one. I like parties.

Hello all: Jeff here. Live in the South Bay -- mainly ride PV and surrounding areas solo -- looking to change the solo aspect on occasion.
Welcome Jeff! I'm a SB'er, too! :D
Aren't baaaaaaadddd girls in reality good? :D
Yes. That makes us very, very, very.... good.
Well, ya just never know!
Yay! Bike Maintenance Party (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=290804) at Greg's House! :D
Hello~
I am Joe (Won-Jin). I just moved back to Southern California from Korea, saw the raging gas prices (allbeit they are much much cheaper than Korea) and decided I would rather get into biking. I am in the Riverside Area, specifically UCR as I am a student. If you see a newbie looking rider near UCR toppling over cause he forgot to flick his heel out, give a shout.

Sup all, wanted to poke my head in here and check it out. Just started riding, about 2 months ago on my mountain bike. Threw some slicks on it and away I went. Been mostly cruising through Huntington Beach. I am currently shopping for a road bike....which I hope to soon have. Hope to see some of you out there.

Hello all,
Name is Ken. I've been reading this forum for a short while and decided to join in on the fun. I'm located in north county San Diego and have been riding since 2000 when I bought a Specialized Allez.
Here is an old pic of me from the Tour de Palm Springs:
My mileage has been off lately but I somehow managed to do the Cool Breeze century the past two years. I'm signed up again this year with a goal of having a decent amount of fitness by August.
The Specialized was a good bike but it fell victim to bike lust when I started ramping up the miles this spring. I'm now on the carbon bandwagon:
So, what happens now?

Welcome, Ken! :) Nice pics. What happens now? Come join on a ride. This Sunday is the LA River Ride if that would interest you, and I believe quite a group of BFers are joining.
Hey guys (and ladies),
The name is Jason, i'm in Temple City -- first post here but i've been lurking quite a bit just trying to do my research and all that good stuff...relatively new to the Road Bike scene coming from a MTB background.
I usually ride with my mom/dad/sister along the SGRT off of Encanto Pkwy (was actually there this past Sunday to take my mom out on her new Trek Navigator) just to cruise around but a few months ago I started to see more and more road bikes and they really peaked my interest. So after scouring the information superhighway I landed here and i've found more than a fill of helpful information. Of course I started out wanting an entry level bike but quickly caught the bug and looked towards something a little nicer to motivate me to stay with the sport.
I pick up my Scott CR1 on Wednesday, which is my first ever road bike and haven't been this excited for something in a very very long time. Hopefully I can get out and go on some of these group rides that i've been reading about--would really like to meet you guys and make some new friends.
Thanks!
So, what happens now?
we provide you with your 200 lashes as part of your membership.
Please join us on the next ride for your gift.

Thanks--yea a good friend of mine at work who is a sponsored MTB rider for Santa Cruz has been riding his 05 CR1 for quite some time and he wouldn't stop talking about his. I figured first hand experience is pretty key and he could help me out with anything on the bike in the future.

I'm Jerome and I ride a bunch of different bikes, though not all at the same time. My current favorite is a 1977 Schwinn Super Le Tour and I ride it all over SoCal. Weekdays I frequent North Orange County via the Santa Ana River Class I Bike Path and weekends can be found just about anywhere that's legal to ride on the pavement or dirt, day or night.

Thanks! The Sierras in the second and San Gabriels in the third. The mountains are where I feel at home.
I shunned the road until moving back here two years ago. When in Rome, right?

I live in East Hollywood/ Thai Town.
I'm surrounded by big ugly heavily trafficked streets on all sides.
On the other hand there are tons of amazing social rides that start not too far from home and I am really close to the subway ... so that extends my range a bit.
Right now my big weekly adventure is my Monday commute to Westchester (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1071822). I never would have considered riding there 6 months ago ... now I never even consider driving to work.
I've been living in LA for almost 10 years and riding regularly now for about a year. I have to say, that cycling has been a complete rediscovery of the city for me. I used to completely avoid going to the westside when I was car/bus dependant ... now I get excited if there is a errand in venice or santa monica.
Before, getting around was a just a big chore. Now I see traveling as this special treat that I get everytime I need to go somewhere.

I gotta give massive props GG. He rolls out from Ojai to Silverlake to do a 30+ mile fast ride that starts at 10p and ends as late 1 or 1:30 am.
He truly is as crazy as his moniker.

Hi to John (JPConrad) and Mary (merider1). Mary....in case you have no idea who this is I'm John's friend and rode up Chantry with you twice. Are there any group rides in the Escondido area? I was driving down from Ramona on Hwy-78 last week when I was out there looking for a house and seen some guys cranking up the mountain......not sure if I'm ready for that yet, (or ever!). I would think a 12-27 cassette might be good for out there vs my current 12-25 cassette.

Hi, CaptDon! A 12/27 (or compact crankset) is a great idea for Escondido. Pretty much everywhere you go, there's a hill that'll kick your butt. There are two main groups that leave from Escondido: The Ranchos Cycling Team (http://www.ranchoscycling.org/index.html) (not so much a 'club', but a bona-fide race team that is acceptable of all riders...you'll learn on the first ride whether you are actually fit enough to enjoy their rides). Their organized Saturday rides leave from the Westfield North County Fair (Via Rancho Parkway and the I-15), and normally go for 50-60 miles. In-season rides are fast. Off-season are still fast, but called 'base miles training'.
The other is the North County Cycling Club (http://www.northcountycycleclub.com/roadies.htm), and they have organized rides all week. Saturday is their main ride, and leaves from Old Restaurant Row in San Marcos for 35-50 miles. Longer rides branch off from there, and other groups have a different starting point. This is much more of a social club, and caters to riders of many different fitness levels. There's also a link on their site to route maps throughout all of the North County.

Thanks for the information...... I'm not a fast rider, just an old guy who enjoys riding and trying to keep fit. I'll have to get in touch with the North County Bike Club.
Thanks again,
Don

Hi guys, my name is Chris. I live in La Palma (that's that little city next to Buena Park) and I want to start riding to get rid of my belly and for fun. I just bought a used diamondback mtn bike off CL then went to bicycle kitchen to learn how to fix it up. Maybe in a year or two I'll splurge some if my interest in biking remains strong (which I hope it does).

Hi everyone. My name is TJ, I live in Pasadena, and I just bought my second road bike, a Cannondale SixThirteen, Team 2. I'm just getting back into riding, so I'm doing short, 15-mile rides near Pasadena. I want to gradually go on longer rides, but I also have a 17-month old daughter who needs my attention.
Last weekend, I got a ticket for running a stop sign in Sierra Madre (I didn't see the cop, and went through it at about 5mph because there was no traffic.) Does anyone have any advice about whether I should try to fight the ticket and reschedule the court date, or pay bail and go to traffic school?
Anyway, I've had my bike for a month, and I'm really happy with it. I'm looking for biking buddies, too. So if anyone wants to email me for a Saturday morning ride (NOT thru Sierra Madre) or early Sunday morning ride (I like starting my ride before 7 am), email me! Thanks.

You freely admit running a stop sign? Just because you're on a bike doesn't make it any less of a crime. One of the biggest gripes motorists have about cyclists is the fact that there are a lot of cyclists out there who don't obey the law.
Suck it up. You might be able to talk down the fine and take traffic school for it if you show some remorse and understanding about how your actions reflect poorly on the rest of us.
EDIT: Dang.. I sound like a safety nazi. Sorry about that. And welcome.
I get pissed at motorists who don't obey the traffic laws. But it would be hypocritical of me to break the same laws when I'm on a bike, so it really peeves me when other cyclists ride with as little concern as motorists. That's all. I'm sorry I sounded so harsh about it.

No prob-- I appreciate your advice. I kind of also wanted to warn other cyclists who ride in Sierra Madre about the incident. There really was no traffic around, which was why I was so surprised when the cop pulled me over. I do consider myself a considerate cyclist.
