Southern California - Who are you? Where do you ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

No prob-- I appreciate your advice. I kind of also wanted to warn other cyclists who ride in Sierra Madre about the incident. There really was no traffic around, which was why I was so surprised when the cop pulled me over. I do consider myself a considerate cyclist.
Welcome to the forums ... Sierra Madre ... especially if you are going through Sierra Madre Blvd, you should stop at stop signs, and even go as far as unclipping, and putting your foot down. They seem to target cyclists more here than most other cities. There are various stop sign traps in SoCal, but this is very notorious.

Hi everyone. My name is TJ, I live in Pasadena, and I just bought my second road bike, a Cannondale SixThirteen, Team 2. I'm just getting back into riding, so I'm doing short, 15-mile rides near Pasadena. I want to gradually go on longer rides, but I also have a 17-month old daughter who needs my attention.
Last weekend, I got a ticket for running a stop sign in Sierra Madre (I didn't see the cop, and went through it at about 5mph because there was no traffic.) Does anyone have any advice about whether I should try to fight the ticket and reschedule the court date, or pay bail and go to traffic school?
Anyway, I've had my bike for a month, and I'm really happy with it. I'm looking for biking buddies, too. So if anyone wants to email me for a Saturday morning ride (NOT thru Sierra Madre) or early Sunday morning ride (I like starting my ride before 7 am), email me! Thanks.
Welcome, TJ. Which street were you on in Sierra Madre when you got the ticket? I ride through Sierra Madre a lot, but I try to do it up on Grandview.

Sierra Madre cops are somewhat agitated by the large number of Saturday morning riders that regularly run stop signs.....mostly, riders from the Montrose pack which finishes its ride in Sierra Madre.

Welcome to the forums, Chris. :)
OK I am still getting use to this. I did my intro on the main Introductions thread not realizing there was a separate one for so cal.:o
I joined a week ago and went on the July slacker century.:):) I had a great time meeting so many of you but had a hard time keeping up with Tortise45, 1955 and Ziptie on the way back. I am looking forward to more group rides like the July slacker century.:):) Did I mention I enjoyed the group.:)
I had originally joined under a different name less than a week ago:) but I am taking advice to use a different name.:( SO I am just going by Keith:D
I ride the Santa Anna River trail quite a lot with Tortise45, 1995, actel188 and others. I and going on the Amtrack century in September. I also really enjoy mountain biking but have been doing road rides mainly for the last six months.

Obviously not. Looking at all the pictures of the ride back, it looks like I rode with the wrong group.:( I can say that I held last place of the large group for a while on the way to the first coffee stop. So there is hope for me after all.:)

I think the majority of the tickets given are on Sierra Madre (especially the area where you got ticketed, since it's going downhill).

Hello everyone,
I've been floating around here the past couple weeks and decided I might as well introduce myself. i did make an introduction in the intro section, but figured I'd do another one here. I just started biking a couple months ago, I usually bike on weekend morning here in Long Beach. I bike on the San Gabriel River trail, I start on Del Amo Blvd in the city of Lakewood/Cerritos. I started biking because I registered with my workplace to do the MS Bike Tour in october...ever since then I've been addicted to biking. I hope I learn a lot of great things from here because i am a total beginner. Also hoping to maybe finally do some organized rides with some other beginners because I have yet to learn to ride in a group.
Other interesting things about me, I love martial arts, currently studying Kendo. I also am a car lover mostly import cars. I even started my own car team! so yah, that's my short intro.
Thanks.

Javier...you could do the 6 faces of Soledad. I hear that's pretty easy.
:roflmao:
Seriously, though, heading up and down the coast is a great ride, and as difficult/easy as you want it to be.

NOS? NOS? I'm using Venomx
I just put a 150 shot on my ride yo, I started spraying and instantly the intake manifold flew off then the floor panel flew off with it.
By the time I knew it, my whole car was coming off in pieces I was going so fast.
Then I hit the warp speed.

I agree with Mo'Phat on the coastal ride. I just moved from San Diego to Temecula, but would hit the coast almost every week when I lived in PQ.
BTW- I am new to this forum, and if there is anyone on the SoCal board who lives/rides in the Temecula area, give me a shout. I am sick of riding alone in the heat!

Lots of us ride between Escondido and Rainbow...The hills of Fallbrook and Ramona. Keep a lookout for when those rides go.

man, why would you move to temecula? sh*tty people, terrible roads, and almost nonexistent bike lanes.

unfortunately work/lifestyle changes forced us out...sold our little ghetto home (1850 sqft) and traded up to a 3,000 sqft 5 bdrm for @ 600 a month less. Since my wife and I work 85% from home, it just made sense to have the home office, rooms for both kids, big yard, great schools, and a 3 car garage to hold all my bikes...but enough of the finances...
You are soooo right about the rest...cycling here sucks compared to SD...the drivers are even more clueless, the roads are bad (lucky for me there is some good mtn biking), and it is Africa hot for 3 months a year...I really miss Torrey and the coastal breeze!

Just joined.
I usually spend my riding time on Peters Canyon Mountain to Sea trail in Irvine. Just getting back into the swing. Currently my ride is an Electra 7 speed cruiser. I do at least 10 miles a day, stopping to feed the ducks just south of the 5 in the mornings.
Having been into touring in my teens and early twenties and doing all day rides I have found it difficult to resume cycling 20 years later. Comfort and endurance are the main issues. I am planning on a new bicycle here very soon and have some tough decisions to make.

Just found this site,
Name is Andrew, I kind of quit driving. Ride to work 48 miles round trip. Like 4 days a week, sometimes 3. Ride on weekends but mostly on the mountain bike and mostly on the single speed. Was racing for awhile on the mountain bike but took this year off. I live near temecula. Ride around there try to stay away from the coast highway. I think my first century ride will be breathless agony next year I want that jersey
Dang, I'm gonna have to read this thread again! Tons of new people!!!

I posted a blurb in the Intro's and several in the Vintage section, but this seems like a good spot to be...
My name is Lew and I am a victim of the Tour de France mystique every summer. I watch it. I get addicted. I think about riding again, and then reality sets in. This year, though, I actually got out my bike and dusted it off. It's still in the living room so maybe there is hope.
I am a 62-year-old retired middle-school teacher - starving, I might add - living in the Carmel Mountain Ranch area of San Diego up near Poway. I used to be a roadie and have several long distance rides under my wheels, but I've been out of the bicycle scene for years. Now that I'm interested again, it seems that I'm a little intimidated by the carbon fiber, titanium, state-of-the-gut nutrition culture out there. I just have an early 80's Picchio that reeks of passe' technology. Maybe it's just right for an aging jock like me? Anyway, I had hoped to hook up with a few of you who have more crust than muscle tone - maybe there is a small group of you out there who would tolerate a back marker who has some steep hills and some steeper learning curves to climb.
Here is my antique. Please don't laugh. I can't afford anything else.

I like that bike, Lew...but wow, I'd need a trampoline or something to get up on that saddle!
That gearing might be pretty rough for the Poway, CMR, Escondido surrounding foothills. Looks like a 42/23 low gear? That hurts my knees just thinking about.

ps. The most important improvement over time vis-a-vis roadbike technology has to be kevlar tires for flat protection.
Just my opinion...
