Hi,

Just wanted to introduce myself... Eugene here. I'm pretty much a beginner with a just a week of commuting under my belt. I've got 2 rides: a Dahon Mu SL and a KHS Moca/BionX PL350 combo. Via car/train/bike I make my daily commute from Altadena to Culver City. I wanted to improve my health, make use of mass transit, save Mother Earth, and have fun while I'm at it.

In my spare time I enjoy fishing, kayaking, playing guitar, and bowling, but most of the time I'm just trying to keep up with my 3-year old girl. ;)

See ya on the road!

I'm new to this forum... I'm in the LA area.. looking to join up with some slow riders who can set a pace I can follow without cardiac arrest. I normally ride around the Rose Bowl area, been up Angeles Crest once, glendale/pasadena/arcadia...

here are some pics of my road bikes..

Kestrel 200sci with a great big mishmash of components - currently in pieces as I'm doing some upgrading..

and a Kestrel Talon SL which I'm in the process of building..

Hi Larry, I'm also looking to join up with some slow riders in the Pasadena area.
I want to ride every Saturday morning (10 am) at the Rose Bowl. If anyone is interested,

Welcome, Ben! :) I wish I knew of a good group in that area. Of course, if you go over there, you may just meet the riders out doing laps.

Relative noob here~ My name is Brian, and I live in Fallbrook (N. San Diego County). I took up Mt Biking again in May of 07. I was at a very unhealthy 265 lbs. With Mt. Biking and doing intervals I started dropping the lbs. I soon realized I wanted to be able to ride from my house, and although I abhorred the idea of me being a road weenie I bought a used bike on Craigslist. It was a decent bike, and during a business trip in Oxnard I realized I really love my road bike. I built up to a 100 miles a week, and then started jonesing for a new bike. I bought a 06 Felt F4C last month and am getting that dialed in... I will be riding cyclevets on a semi regular basis once I get comfortable on my new ride... Would love to ride local in N County with some folks. I have set some modest goals for 08, my first century... 200 miles in a week, and getting down to 185 (currently 220).

Welcome, Brian! :) Good job on losing down to your current weight! I'm back on my diet and I know it isn't easy. You're well on your way, and you will do your first century this year. You might want to consider Palm Springs as a large contingent from here will likely go and it is more fun in a group. Also, it is relatively easy as far as riding 100 miles goes. Congrats on your new bike.

Thanks! When is the Palm Springs ride? I am considering the Tour De Cure in N County.. Its in mid April, but I am not sure if I want to do the 50 or 100 mile version.. I am hoping to find a group to ride with for that event.. Nevermind, googled the Palm Springs ride.. February is right around the corner.. not sure I am ready for a century.. I have never been over 35 miles... I could do the 55 miler though..

Well, all you need to do is 50 miles and I'm a firm believer that you can do 100. It's mostly pedaling and fueling. But if you want to start out with the 55 mile route, that would be a good way to get started!

BeeDee
01-03-08, 02:32 PM
I am confident I can do 50... I hear the last 25 of a century is all willpower.. so I am really just worried about getting thru the 50-75 part... It may seem vain, but the only reason I want to ride a century is so that I can drop that fact casually in conversations at parties and family get togethers... lol

Hello Everyone...I made an introduction in the general roadie forum, but thought I'd put one here since I'm a SoCalie (IE, in particular). :)

I grew up in Southwestern Oregon, riding my 10-speed to school and back, about 8 miles round trip. I remember thinking how awesome I was that I was the only kid riding his bike when the other kids were driving. Now, 15ish years later, I've climbed back on a roadie, and I'm hooked. Hooked!

I did some research about 5 months ago to see what was out there, what was good, and I picked up this bike, a 54cm Specialized Allez Somethingsomething from CL for $350. It rides like a charm, and I'm already up to 45 mile long rides on the weekends on the San Bernardino part of the Santa Ana River Trail.

I live in Loma Linda (very near the University) and my usual daily/quasi-daily ride is down Barton into Redlands and back, about 14 miles round trip. I'm doing this at between 15-20mph, but I'm not sure if that's slow or fast or neither. Saturday mornings, like I mentioned, are on the SART, to the end of the pavement and back.

Here's my introductory question, I guess: The idea of riding a century fills me with glee (and honestly, not many things do, these days), but I'm not sure I'm ready for one yet - I've only been riding consistently for about 5 months, and only done 40-mile+ rides about four times, with the last two feeling really good at the end, like more miles wouldn't be a problem. The Tour de Palm Springs is coming up, which I would *love* to do, but I think I should probably only do the 55 mile route, as 100 miles is more than double my usual ride.

Oh, right...there was supposed to be a question in there...:) Could I be ready to ride a century a month from now? Or should I just stick with the 55 miler, since this will be my first long and first group ride?

Here's my bike; I've since raised the saddle and angled it slightly, which seems to fit better, but I won't know for sure until the rain stops.

If I am reading your post right, and you are 15 years out of high school, you might well be ready for a century in a month. I think Herbm is going to have a ride on the San Gabriel River trail on Jan. 26...it's 71 miles...come along and see how you do.

Here are a couple of articles from bicycling magazine about last-minute century training:

Welcome, Cheeken! :) Nice bike. The rule I went by: if you can ride 50 miles comfortably, you can ride a century. You just need to fuel more and have a true desire to do it. You'll see. ;)

Ok, I'd better fess up. So here I am. Been on the forums since last summer or so. To be found in the San Diego area usually riding solo unless it's something organized. The pic is from the Amtrak Century. Had my Carradice because I was up in LA visiting a friend and did the ride as my way home. Maybe I'll post some more pictures when I take some, or if you beg, I got some good ones of me off the bike, or even done up for the club.

Hey there everyone. Introduced myself in the intro forum, but thought I would come by here too. So here it goes. My name is Mike and I am from Seal Beach, CA.

So after years of trying to hit the gym and ride the stationary bike and do the occasional weight lifting, only to lose interest after a few months, I decided I needed to find something that would hold my attention and be healthy. So this weekend I test drove my mother in laws Trek bike and I was hooked. Saturday went out and bought a Trek 2.3 road bike and yesterday took it out for a 25 mile ride from Seal Beach, CA to Huntington Beach and back.

I have to say I am hooked. Riding is such a rush. The speed on a road bike is incredible. At one point yesterday I was pushing 25 mph and it was great feeling the wind blowing on my face. Not to mention the scenery at the beach is beautiful. I think I may have found my new love that combines being healthy and getting in shape with something truly fun and exhilarating to do.

I just wanted to say hello and how great it is to find this very informative forum.

Thanks for the welcome Thomson. It really is a great activity. So nice to have finally found something physical that is not tedious or boring. Normally I would fight going to the gym, but with cycling, I can't wait for my next ride. I am psyched to ride tonight. Probably going to do a 10 mile ride after work from Sunset Beach to Huntington Dog Park and back along the lit path.

Hey, gang-

I said hi earlier (previous post (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=379416&highlight=)), but didn't get a chance to share a pic of my new project/lifestyle plans.

I recently moved to San Clemente for the coastal atmosphere and with the intention of train commuting most of the week to Irvine (especially once we get past these few rainy months), and enjoying the 3.5 mile jaunt from the Tustin train station to the office. I've made the trip about 10 times now on a friend's bike and have learned a lot about bike commuting (through experience and BF threads;). Who'd have thought turning left would be such a big deal!

Last week a co-worker gave me their spouse's old Peugeot which needs a little TLC but should be a great daily ride. Here's a pic of the bike--1986'ish Peugeot that weighs a ton. I've got plans to get it in shape to suit as a good daily-commuter and able to carry me 50 miles on a weekend run (If I get the bike bug beyond that I'll probably just buy a dedicated performance cycle). So, any suggestions are welcome! I've got a halogen on front and a little 3-LED flasher on the rear plus reflectors on the messenger bag. I'm going to start by getting a non-crotch numbing seat and find a nice rear-rack and pannier set-up so I can lose the back-pack. Not sure what to do about the wheels/tires, but the front is a little bent up so I'll see what my LBS says when I drop it off for some TLC this week. Also if anyone has any suggestions for a cheap pedal/shoe setup for semi-casual riding I'd appreciate it. I'm definitely comfortable and sensitive enough on bikes to know that I'm losing a lot on the up pull.

Cheers!
Steven

My goodness, I am very impressed by all of you posters/riders. I am Ingrid from Long Beach, self employed (DomesticExperience.com) and ride a Trek 7000 Hybrid and a K2 Mach1 road bike. I use my hybrid to commute to work, markets, malls, and just for cruising. The road bike is used for longer and straight through rides.
I run races and have done some half marathons and will soon compete in my first triathlon. If it all goes well, I am more than certain that I will be hooked. I am looking forward to doing some fun rides in the upcoming months.
If anyone is in the North Long Beach area and available to ride during the week or weekends, give me a shout!

Greetings All,

I usually ride in Griffith Park, Los Feliz and Hollywood Hills. Try to ride to work as much as possible when call time permits. Work long hours so riding home solo late at night doesn't really thrill me.

I am 52 and have been married for 12 yrs. Started riding in the 80's then stopped in the 90's. I have a arthritic condition that is fusing my spine. Cycling not only relieves the pain but helps with my mobility.

My pal Eddie C. has re-ignited the cycling bug about a year ago. He has since introduced me to Mark J. & Herb M., some forum members. Great Guys.

I have a Specialized Allez Comp w/ a compact double otherwise stock. We also have a Lifecycle that gets good use.

Looking forward to some new routes and group rides.

Cheers,

Andy Flores

Hello, I ride out of the San Fernando Valley, and sometimes do rides out from Redondo Beach with a friend from work. I've been doing laps around the local park now for several months and have moved on to doing 30-50 mile rides at least once a week which is a lot more fun! I still do laps if I'm short on time and I just need a quick 15-20. I'm getting ready for my first metric in April and hopefully soon after, a real century. I have a 2006 Felt F80 which has been an awesome first roadbike for me.

I also have a Specialized Hardrock MTB that has been converted to a singlespeed. It is mostly used for local short runs and shredding pavement etc.. I have recently started taking it out to some easy dirt trails which I have found to be a blast and plan on doing some more in the near future.

Also, just picked up (for free) a 1985-ish Univega Gran Rally. I am very excited about this bike. It was sitting in my dads garage for who knows how long, in near awesome condition. Filled up the tires and took it for a spin and all of the Shimano 600 components work beautifully. With a few modifications, I plan on turning it into a reliable commuter and getting some extra saddle time. Thanks!
