Southern California - Who are you? Where do you ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Heya Everyone, My name is James i am a student locomotive engineer, been with the railroad about 2 ½ years. I decided to cut and run from being an emt and ended up there. I currently reside in Brea, after living in the mountains of San Bernardino with my parents for almost 20 years. I recently started seriously riding the past few months, I currently ride a Felt f80. Most of my rides are whatever I feel like at the current time, although most are either through carbon canyon or up brea canyon. I promise a picture soon enough.
hmm 13th page... maybe this isnt so good =P
Welcome James! I'm superstitious about 13 too, so to make you feel better, I'll post here as well. We'll "split" the bad luck. ;)
Switch to 30 posts/page (very convenient for the ultra-long threads) and you're at the top of page 11 instead. ;)

i am billy and i used to ride raod bikes with my grandpa when i was younger then i got into skateboarding and then kickboxing and i think i have come full circle back to the bike. i like to lift weights, play music and ride a bike. i just got a mtb and i ride on the streets around my house (la sierra area of riverside) very early in the morning mostly (need some slicks) but someday i will have a roadie to do that with. i try to make it out to trails on the weekends.

I'm Stephen and just started reading these forums. I work in Buena Park and live in Cypress and have been using my Cannondale F500 for commuting since I smashed up my car a couple months ago and found I have no desire to fix it or buy something else. I've also been riding Coyote Creek, SART and the San Gabriel River Trail on the weekends and a couple days during the week. Here's a pic of the 97(ish) F500 commuter and I just won a 90 vintage Cannondale Black Lightning last night on ebay. Guess I'm going back to my roots as a roadie.

Well...I took a wild guess! Performance calls that location as "North Torrance". I've never heard of a section of Torrance referred to as "North" before....:D

Welcome! If you're old enough do you remember the Aero Mexico jet that crashed in Cerritos back a few years ago? That's the first thing that came to mind when I saw your location.
I've heard about it, im only 20, but it crashed like less than 1-2 miles from my house.

Hello all, my name is Cole. I’ve been riding my Marin Bolinas Ridge for about 3 years now as an exercise routine. I ride during my lunch hour 3X-4X a week on the S.A.R.T. Got my first road bike last month, an 06 Felt F3C at Performance during their double points deal. Use the double points to get pedals and shoes. After a month of test rides and shopping for the right shoes (Sidi Genius Mega) I went on my inaugural ride this Saturday from Long Beach to Crystal Cove via PCH. I’m still a noob at road bike and don’t have enough mileage on this F3C to have an opinion about it yet. I’m Hoping to learn from you all and this forum because this F3C is too much bike for me. Looking forward to meeting all of you on the many group rides.

OK,
I'm Dan, from Cosa Mesa, Ca.
I consider myself a Mt Biker and ride whenever I have the time.
Some of my favorite rides are here in OC. The local ride for me is El Moro ( crystal cove), but do others. One of my favorites is Satiago truick trail, but I need to have a high energy to finish is. Also regular rides for me are Bell view trail, this goes from the entrance of Dove canyon to Caspers wilderness park.

A big thanks to Caligurl for telling me about this forum!!!
I'm a new road bike rider, got a road bike as a present back in Feb of 06 but haven't really been able to do consistent riding until the past few months. I ride about 10 miles each morning M-F and at least one 50ish mile ride on weekends. I ride in Santa Monica in the mornings-- mainly just San Vicente loops (I'm the slow one on the purple bike in the obnoxious orange jersey) and on weekends Santa Monica to Palos Verdes.
My bike isn't great (Specialized Dolce) but then again, I'm not a good enough cyclist at this point to really notice the difference between my bike and a really good one :)
I hope to become a better cyclist as the weeks and months roll on. That's what I really like about cycling, there's so much to learn and there's always stuff to work on.
Nice to meet you all.
No pics on the bike yet-- I ride alone mostly too.

hey guys, i've met some of you this past saturday at the chino hills meet, but for the rest of you, my name is jee-soo (pronounced G-Sue). I live in Irvine and um...well yeah.

it was cool meeting a lot of you. i hope we can all ride together again sometime soon.
Also question:
where can i find a fairly cheap set of pedals/mtn shoes around here? i don't even mind if they're used, i just can't afford to put down >$100 on a set but I really want a pair (i HATE it when my feet slip off my pedals). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome G...for pedals and shoes...if you want new, www.Performancebike.com (http://www.Performancebike.com) will generally have the best deals. You can pick up some Forte (Performance house brand) SPD pedals for about $35 and I think the cheapest shoes are about $45. Sign up for the Team Performance and get a 10% (or more) discount.
For Used, you can always try craigslist.org.
If that's still out of your league, just pick up a set of toe cages or Powerstraps, which attach to your platform pedals and you can wear regular shoes. Maybe $20 total.

Hey mrdick-- i usually do take the bike path from the marina to its end in pv-- it's a little congested at times but i hate stopping for lights so I just deal with the traffic on the path. give a little wave if you happen to blow by me-- i usually do the trip to pv on sundays.
while we're on the subject-- do any of you guys know a good route to get from the end of the bike path in pv(or from palos verdes blvd) to hb? i've heard things can get a little tricky between those two spots.

I've been on this forum for awhile, but I never filled out anything on this thread, so I thought I should finally just do it!
My name is Rick and I live in Whittier, so I ride Turnbull Canyon, La Mirada Loops and Coyote Creek bike path from home. On weekends I ride with the Orange County Rebel Riders (hence the OCRR) out of Irvine. You are all welcome to ride with us:) . Check out the Ride Schedule tab at: www.ocrebels.com and print the route sheet for the ride you'd like to do. All the rides are free, and the only rules are 1. Ride Safe and 2. Wear a helmet.
Other than Rebel Rides, I ride centuries and double centuries, esp. the doubles that are California Triple Crown approved. My wife Jackie also rides centuries and CAL Triple Crown doubles, plus organizes double century training rides for women every winter / spring.
I usually ride a Ti GT Edge, but also have an 853 GT Edge, a Mercian Vincitore touring bike, an old Masi ('77) and an even older Hercules 3-Spd ('57). My wife rides a Redline Conquest D (D for disc brakes) or (less often) her Paramount.
All our bikes are pretty much Shimano (the Masi has some Campy) and I'm building up a new frame with SRAM Force.
Best Regs,
Rick / OCRR

Also, Nashbar has Crank Bros EggBeater pedals for $50 (and check the coupon forum for an additional 10% off code). I much prefer EBs over SPuDs.
