Yep, conditions sucked during the first half of that ride. As the route passes within a few blocks of my house after about 15 miles, I came pretty close to just going home and back to bed. I've gone down Portrero several times but it's really only the top portion that is bad. After the first 3/4 mile, it's just one long run out to the bottom. Unfortunately, the road itself really needs re-paving. That part is scarier than the steeps.
Problem with going up that road is some blind corners. I'll have to try it one day.
Sheldon
I heard it has just recently been repaved.
Ok, looking at the route profile that starts with 2000 feet of climbing in the first 5 miles or so. I'm reconsidering my options and may do the lowland century. What I was told today is that the highland route climbs forever, and has something like 7600 feet or so, but seems like more. While the lowland route has 5000 feet and seems like less.
I heard it has just recently been repaved.
Went down it yesterday and yes it has been repaved but only on the 'hill' section. The rest is still marginal. Bone
Hiya folks,
For those planning on riding, just passing along a tidbit:
A large brushfire has been burning for nearly two weeks in the corridors towards highway 5. That fire has advanced courtesy of Santa Ana winds southwest closer to the coastal foothills and is now threatening Ojai and the Santa Paula area. Several roads in these areas are now closed.
While it may pose no immediate threat to the route, the smoke from the fire has descended upon our area. Even here in the Conejo, it's a bit thick and stinky from time to time. As we get closer to the ride date, the fire may get closer and air conditions iffy.
Keep in touch with the news so you are aware of this. Doing a long, labored ride with significant climbing is going to be nasty if this fire keeps blasting ash and toxins in our direction.

I'll be bailing if that's the case. No amount of Albuterol is going to counteract smoke and ash.

It worked for me. Signed up for the double metric. Now to convince myself I can do the climbing. :)

OK....the link works.....but now how do I get the group discount? Do I click for $30 and discount is applied automatically? I'm not clear.
markw....how did you get your group discount?
caligurl

that's just it.... the discount ($20 is gone... was gone EARLY!)
i emails mj grove and he/she? not sure if mj is a man or woman?) anyways... mj emailed back and didn't give me any answer! except to go ahead and send the names! so i emailed back asking HOW to get the $20 ride fee cuz hubby and i had not yet registered... UGH!
the best you can get from active right now is to use the LAW link and get the ride for $25... which is the late fee minus the $5 group fee.... i assume from what others said... there was actually a "group" fee button... OR they used the LAW link?
that's what i get for waiting til the last minute! lol! BUT... in all fairness to me (and you)... the site does say AFTER 9/18! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
i'll see if i have an email from mj when i get home.... (last night he/she didn't email me til 10 when i was already in bed!)
this incident isn't helping my "monday bad mood" any! lol!

I decided to not to register online.
Since the late fee has already taken effect I'm simply taking my completed registration form with me on the day of the ride and register like they require. I'll simply pay the late fee and they'll deduct the group discount that morning...:)

i'm ticked that i even have to pay the late fee since THEY messed up!
I got my reply back from Bobbi about which route to use around 11pm. I spaced it and didn't get registered until about a quarter after midnight, but it was still the $20+3 fee that active charges.

last night? how did you get that! the ONLY options i had were regular $30 and LAW member $25! and that was around 8 last night!
I did the LA Wheelman/group price link, and then put you guys down, along with a link to the thread.
I fell asleep watching TV, and woke up around a quarter after and was like, oh crap... Anyway it apparently hadn't changed on active.com by then, so I signed up. Debating on doing the lowland instead, first 20 miles of the highland route look brutal.

I am registered for this ride too!
I am doing the Lowland Century...doesn't sound like alot of climbing for this route or
descending for that matter....Decker cyn and Potero both scare me :)
Karen
Ok, anyone up for carpool in the SD area? I'll be leaving Santee around 4-4:30am. If it's not too hot, we can do the lowland century in about 5 hours. So figure being back around 2pm. :) I signed up for the double, and am still trying to convince myself into at least 1 hour of punishment, maybe more like 2.

sep 24th - grand tour lite
And September the 19th be Talk Like A Pirate Day....so let us salty dogs be taking things in the right order lest ye be wanting to walk the plank!
markw, I would carpool with you except I'm expecting to be taking a lot longer out there. I plan to take my time with the highland century. Rather than make people wait, I'll probably just drive myself up there.
You don't know, I'll be climbing on my recumbent. Lowland should be doable in 5 to 5.5 hours, highland will take me a good two hours to get over the stuff in the beginning, then watch out. We should hook up for a weekend ride around here sometime. Here are all of my routes so far. Oh, I've got to pick up my powertap in/around Camarillo after the ride so I wouldn't be waiting too long, and I fear you'd be waiting on me if I did the double metric. Torrey is an average of 8mph on the bent.

Saturday I'll be doing the Cyclo-Vets ride starting from Mission Valley. I'm thinking of joining, they've got a good program or two, and you get access to Arnie Baker. :) Starting in October, he has them doing climbing training out in east county.
For the uninformed, who is Arnie Baker?
If you're planning on the highland century, sure, I guess carpooling sounds good. I'm hoping for about 8 hours total time, so I guess you wouldn't be waiting on me too much if things go well.
I signed up for the double, and would probably be 8 hours or so judging from the topo map. You guys will kill me the first 5-10 miles. But revenge is sweet on the downhill. :) I'm still a bit gravitationally enhanced, but I will probably be below 210 by Sunday. We'd have to leave 4-4:30 figuring 2 hour drive to get there and I don't want to rush starting...
As for your other question...

You should do the Saturday ride. I rode to it, rode it and then rode home, 55 miles total. This Saturday I'll just do the ride itself since I'll be grinding up some stupid mountain on Sunday. :)
You should do the Saturday ride.
Unfortunately, my professor expects his minions (err... make that grad students) to be in the lab on Saturdays.

I could smell smoke in Sherman Oaks last night, but I'm not sure it's from the same fire. They are predicting a cool down of sorts starting tomorrow (but then a reheat on Sunday). With this cool down will come humidity which usually helps with fire fighting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm doing the double metric with a friend (and a group, but many of them arrive late and we are not waiting after 7:45 a.m. to take off) and hope to meet some of you guys. My friend is a tall blonde on an orange trek and I'll be on my powder-blue one. I'm also generally a "permi-grin" type - so look for the tall and short blonde, the later with a big grin even while climbing Latigo. :D
