Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm going to be using Gookinaid, lemon-flavored. That said, I finally got around to picking out something because of my "oops" last Sunday. I've tried the drink, but not outdoor while riding. So at this point, that info isn't worth much. Maybe ask me again in a few weeks what I think of it.
What is that, markw?
What do you use, Jason?
Just gathering info. ;)
Perpetuem is a Maltodextrin mix that you use for when you're going to use for more than 2 hours of exercise.
Check out the Endurance Athletes Guide to Success on the hammer site. It's an excellent guide.
http://www.hammernut.com/za/HNT?PAGE=FREEDOWNLOADS
Malto, which is the main ingredient of GU, Hammergel, Heed, Perpetuem, or any other $$$ sports drink is in itself cheap. I have a little Perpetuem left, maybe enough for the ride, but I'm going to pack about 1800 calories worth of food on the bike in powder form. I try to minimize stopping on rides until the end. Skip the first rest area, hit #2 for water/remix energy drink, and maybe some solids, and see how it goes from here.
Here's the malto guide from Arnie Baker (Floyd's coach)
http://www.arniebakercycling.com/handouts/hn_fa_maltodextrin_nutrition.htm
Enjoy!
edit: Another thing I do/use are endurolytes. I also run my ride time as the second display on my computer so I know when to eat. Ie. 3 endurolytes at the top of the hour, hit the water every 15 minutes, have food on the bottom of the hour. Keeps you from cramping and bonking.

I've got a ton of that stuff that I've won at the Fiesta Island Time Trial if you want it. Not sure if I'll use it or not.

Great ride today! I met SirLanceimnot, OCrider, Fixer, MarkW and jschen. Unfortunately, I did not meet Caligurl! My friend and I didn't get going until 7:45 a.m. but it was a gorgeous day for a ride. Hope the rest of you had a great run of it as well.

I almost missed this ride due to my stupidity. I got to Malibu pretty early and saw no one in the parking lot. So I napped in my vehicle for about an hour and when I woke up at 6:30 I was still the only person in the parking lot. Something obviously didn't seem right....how could there be absolutely no one here? This parking lot was full when I did the Grand Tour back in June! I started to panic so I drove out of that lot and saw some activity down below on another street so I drove toward that end of the street to find out they were just people setting up for an open swap meet of sort so I turned around and drove up and down PCH hoping to find the ride. Then I saw a couple of vehicles with bikes on their racks so I decided to follow them and that's how I ended up at the right place....at the end of that same street where that stupid swap meet was.
By then it was almost 7am so I hurridly got ready, got my route slip, and spotted Sir-Lanceimnot still getting ready. I chatted with him briefly and he told me that caligurl had already taken off by herself about 15 minutes earlier. I asked him about jschen and said he hadn't seen him. I didn't spot any other BF'ers so I decided to roll at 7:05 by myself. Sir-Lance said he was going to take off in a bit and will catch up with me and caligurl a few miles into the ride. He wasn't kidding.....he took off almost half an hour after me and caught me just as I reached the first rest stop, right after the initial major climb up Latigo Canyon. As Sir-Lance and I were about to leave the rest stop caligurl showed up after using the rest room which was about a mile down some road. This rest stop was not equipped with porta potties...go figure...
All three of us took off together from that point on and stayed together for the remainder of the ride which was under clear smoke-free skies. Winds were basically calm for the most part. It actually turned out to be a great day for a ride!
As we were leaving rest stop #2, the lunch stop, we saw a few riders coming in so I decided to yell out at them if anyone belonged to BF? That's how we spotted merider in the bunch as none of us have met her before. Sorry we missed the rest of BF'ers on this ride... Let's exchange cell phone numbers next time so we can all meet up at the start.
We took off for the remaining of the ride with Sir-Lance pulling most of the way...:D Thanks Chris! We also had a pleasant tailwind from Port Hueneme all the way to the finish...:)
We rode 121 miles.

What a great report, Fixer! I realize I didn't expound on my ride, but you pretty much covered it. We (my friend Laura and I) did hit some winds for about 12 miles, but I agree that the weather was gorgeous! I love that area. Lee (OCrider) mentioned to me following the ride that it would be nice to put together a BF group ride over there. I have a route up Stunt, but perhaps it can be modified to include climbing Latigo. I love that climb - so not the beast it's purported to be! Easier than GMR I think.
Anyway, very nice to meet you. I am bummed that I didn't meet Caligurl - but she was way ahead!

Anyway, it was great meeting you too! :) So how was the post ride beer?

I'm drinking it now. ;) (okay, beer #2 and then I HAVE to go to bed). I met up with my whole group (Laura, Francis, Glo, Patrick, Alex...riders no one here knows) and we couldn't find any beer anywhere in that block (go figure), so Laura and I grabbed a very quick bite at Howdy's before she had to get home to her daughter.
I hope you had a beer waiting on you when you got home. :D
Awesome ride. :) For various reasons, markw and I were running late, so I didn't roll until about 7:50 AM. And then in trying to make good time going down the rollers on PCH, I missed the turn for Latigo and ended up tacking on four modestly hilly miles near the start. :o So basically, this meant I was chasing from the back of the pack.
Climbed Latigo at a hard tempo pace. Beautiful climb. Gorgeous views of the ocean. We should do this climb sometime as part of one of our group rides. The ride got easier after that climb. After a few hours of riding, got to lunch, having rode alone the entire way. scvroadie was there to greet me, which was much appreciated. Met one of big john's friends I've rode with before and another female. (Was that you, merider?) Headed back on the road, markw and I chatted and rode together for a while, which was nice since it was nice to have someone to ride with finally. Then the roads became more flat, and he blew me away. (He's on a recumbent.)
Pleasant Valley was windy, and I worked pretty hard to do 12-14 MPH. I felt better when I ran into markw and found out he was working hard to maintain 16 MPH. Rolled into the final rest stop and shot the breeze for a while before taking off.
The final leg was done with scvroadie and a female named Sandra. (Or was it Shannon? I hope I remembered her name correctly!) We didn't set a blistering pace, but it was really nice having a group ride experience in that final leg.
I had a blast, and I felt great on the bike. At first, it seemed like an off day on the bike, with my butt hurting (something that rarely happens) starting around mile 40. But as the ride progressed, I started feeling better as a whole. Today, I felt as if I could ride forever. Anyway, ended up not riding forever, just for 125 miles. Took about 8:45, though I could have done better if I didn't tack on those extra four miles and if the last leg wasn't done as a social ride. But hey, whatever. It was a lot of fun that way.
All in all, a great day. :)

I would have to agree with Fixed. While Latigo in not difficult, it is a little harder than GMR, but it is still very doable. Now Stunt road, that might be a little to difficult for some. The SoCal BF group has some great riders but there are some newbies that may have a problem.
It was great riding with you for a while on Santa Rosa road until I melted down. I don't know what happened today. At least you got to meet Cali's husband, Sir Lance.

i agree that latigo isn't difficult... but GMR is definitely easier.... plus the descent on the other side is pretty steep.... i know even now a lot of the gals would have issue with that descent!
stunt road.... i can't judge that on it's own... i've only ridden it at the... what? 97 mile????? mark after doing the rest of the mulholland challenge... including decker road.... on it's own it may not be as bad as i thought it was THAT day....

Got there a little before 7:00 and immediately checked in. Checked to see who had checked in, none of BF people had checked in. Then went back to the car to get ready, took my time, thinking we were going to start at 7:30. Got back to the reg area didn't see anybody road up & down the street, found out Cali, Sir Lance, and fixer had checked in. No jschen. I didn't know merider1 to look for her. But I recognized her as a person that had taken off about 5 minutes before I did. So I rode solo until I found merider1 at the bridge over the freeway.
Up to this point I was feeling pretty good. We had decent pace going up Santa Rosa Rd., I thought we might catch Cali, Fixer, and Lance at the lunch stop. Then about 2 miles short of the turn on to Moorpark, I hit the wall. It was like a head-on collision. I'm sure the heat was a factor among other things. My speed dropped to 7 miles, my HR was really high, there was no power in the legs. So I trickled into the lunch stop at the park. I had decided that I would call my wife and have her pick me up and SAG me back to my car in Malibu. I called home and she was out for recovery ride, no cell phone. I spent at least 45 minutes at the lunch stop, had a sandwich, a couple of sodas, lots of water and I felt a little better. I also had some Vitamin I (ibuprofin), that seemed to help some.
jschen showed up while I was at the lunch stop, then markw rolled in his recumbent. We all rolled out together, I was dreading the little climb to the chicken ranch on the backside of Balcolm, so I just rode it at an easy pace, so I lost contact with jschen & markw. Actually the headwind helped in keeping me from overheating. Then good old LA Ave and Pleasant Valley, both had about 20 mph headwinds. NO FUN. I was hoping with the Santa Anas, I might have the wind at my back, instead it was just the same old on shore wind. Made to the next stop, jschen & markw were there. I had another soda, popsicle, etc. then took off with jschen. and the gal we met at the last stop. Started out at decent pace, but my problems from early in the day came back to haunt me. HR was a little high had to back off the pace, although were still averaging the low 20s, instead of the mid 20s. Had a nice tailwind most of the way back to the start. When we hit the rollers I just had no power in the legs and crawled up them. My ride time totally sucked. Cool Breeze had more climbing and 5 more miles and I was almost 45 minutes faster at Cool Breeze.
I guess I haven't fully recovered from my respiratory infection that I've had for the past couple of weeks.
jschen, you are a class act. Your are too kind, the social ride pace was to keep me company and I really appreciate it. Sorry about the last leg being a social ride pace, that would not normally be my pace. jschen it appears about the point you started feeling good, I hit the wall. You must have picked up all my lost energy and spirits, because the totally left me.
It was a fun ride. Latigo Canyon went up forever. I left about 15 minutes later than anticipated, and then we ran into the remains of an accident on the way up, got lost since we couldn't exit 405->10, and eventually rolled into the start area a little after 730. I was hoping to be there before 7, but hit the snooze one too many times as my in-laws showed up at my place around 1030 the night before. :(
Sooo, myself and Jschen gave chase all day. He smoked me going up Latigo, I caught up with him at the first stop, he was pulling out and I was pulling in for a water refill. Caught him again at Lunch, when we rode together for awhile, but then the road went slightly downhill and I was feeling better/recovered from Latigo, so I slowly gapped him. I flatted on Pleasant Valley, and as I was ready to roll, he caught back up, so we made the final stop at about the same time. Hung around, ate, met merider and her friend. At that time, my ride time was 6:33 with 30 miles left, so I bailed on those guys since they figured they wouldn't hang on PCH with a tailwind. Rolled into the finish with 8:07 on the clock, averaging 19 and change for the last 30 miles. I figured at that pace, I'd catch merider and her friend, but I didn't see them until after the finish.
Anyway, I'm doing Poway next weekend, and will catch everyone at the start. Climbing won't be as bad for that one, and I know most the roads, so no riding the brakes on descents. :)

Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet any of you. I looked around at the start for anyone I'd recognize from the pics posted on this forum. Finally gave up and started at 7:15. It's nice that the weather cooperated (except for the headwind through un-pleasant valley). Even the Moorpark-Stanton Canyon area was smoke free. I rode basically the whole 121 solo except for hanging with a small group for a while on the return from Port Hueneme. Nice tailwind there!

I've had that type of ride before as well, Lee. It completely sucks, but kudos to you for finishing! I was impressed when I saw you at the end since I knew you had pushed through (not that I suggest riders should do that if seriously ill). That was very nice of Jason to keep you company and what good riders do to help out their fellow cyclists (IMHO).

The century had about 2500 ft of climbing. This was my 3rd century since I started riding in April.
And I had my best time on this ride....ride time was 6 hours 3 minutes AVE speed 16.1.
I look forward to meeting the rest of the BF's sometime soon!

So what are the stats on the Latigo Canyon climb?
1st summit is at 2170 ft. Its over six miles to the first summit from the PCH. There's a false summit halfway up. The lower section is steeper. Wave at Axel Rose on the way up.
The second summit is 2240, and climbs less than 500 ft.
How bad was the motorcycle/car traffic at that hour?

Hi Karen - congrats on finishing you're 3rd! It was nice to talk to you and Tony, and I should have introduced myself. I was just so perplexed at having torn my tube stem while pumping the tire (the cause of the flat - and that was one flat of TWO for the day! ugh!). Glad you had a nice ride.

Cali,
Are we going to get a ride report from you. Your day had to better than mine. As Jason and I were riding back to Malibu along PCH it was starting to get cooler. We were thinking about you. We were wondering since it was getting cooler, if you would put the arm warmers back on or not. We were thinking about your tan lines. We couldn't figure out which would be more important, being warm & comfortable or tan lines.
