Sunday, September 24, 7:30 a.m. GRAND TOUR LITE.(Metric double century 125 miles, century 100 miles, metric century 68 miles)
Did you miss the Grand Tour? Or did you ride it and now want to relive some of those moments? Well, here’s a chance to capture some of the Grand Tour flavor in a reduced mileage format.
The Highland Double Metric Century 125-mile route is the same Century Challenge / Double Metric Century route offered in the Grand Tour. It climbs Latigo Cyn., then descends Potrero. A loop to Moorpark (lunch) and Port Hueneme (more food) before returning down the coast completes the day.
The Lowland Century 100-mile route simply travels up the coast to Ventura, making food stops in Port Hueneme going and coming, and returns on Pacific Coast Highway.
The Metric Century 68-mile route stays on the coast on P.C.H., going as far as Port Hueneme for lunch before returning.
All routes start at 7:30 a.m. and are supported with rest stops, sag support and a full lunch.
START: MALIBU CIVIC CENTER. Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu, turn inland on Webb Way (just south of Pepperdine hill), R - Civic Center Drive. Park on street (lot is used for farmer's market) and look for bicycles and check-in/registration table. Please arrive early so as to be prepared to start at 7:30 a.m. IF you are registering on the day of the ride, please come at least 30 minutes early (and call or e-mail in advance so that we know how many to expect for lunch!).
FEES: $25 per rider
DISCOUNTS: $5 for Los Angeles Wheelmen members;
$5 per rider for groups of 5 registering together (To qualify for discount, mail all 5 registrations together or, if registering on line, select group discount option and e-mail m.j.grove@att.net with list of riders to validate group.
LATE FEE: $5 after September 17th. Do not mail registrations after Sept. 17th -- bring them with you to the start. Please also call or e-mail in advance so that we know how many to expect for lunch!
You can register on line at active.com or download a form from the and mail it in. For additional information contact M.J. Grove, event registrar, at (310) 556-7967 or m.j.grove@att.net.

I have my calendar marked for this one but it's a Sunday ride so it's a 50/50 for me right now.
SUPER EDIT 9-18-06: I'm 100% registered & 100% going. Thank you.

I plan on doing the double metric, some other people from Santa Clarita may join me. As soon as I know who is going, I would be up for registering together for the discount.
The double metric is the same as the one on the Grand Tour, it was a great ride. I really enjoyed the climb up Latigo. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the headwind back across the coastal plain to Port Hueneme. Since I was the biggest person, I was the one out front while everyone else sucked my wheel.

$20 for a century, SAG, lunch and stops is a GOOD DEAL!
Oh wait... this is a SUNDAY ride?! Sounds appealing.
Hmm... definitely a Sunday. And pretty cheap. Awesome. I'll have to do this ride!
What routes are you all planning on doing? I'm torn between century and double metric, and I'd probably go with whichever one has some BikeForums SoCal riders willing to ride it as a group.
All the good rides when I can not go :(

Based on the little information they included on their web site
"OTHER OPTIONS: The Lowland Century, up PCH along the shoreline to Port Hueneme, lunch, Ventura, and return along PCH. The Metric Century, PCH to a lunch and turn around in Port Hueneme, PCH to return."
I would say both of these routes are flat. A few rollers on PCH but nothing too steep or long.

Thomson, thanks for the info on the lowland century and metric. Anyone know details about the highland century?

lol! i can tell you about that one.... but since you don't want to do it.... i won't bother! lol!
(it IS a very PRETTY ride, though... well... excect the paradise part... i hate that part of the ride... dull.... boring.... and on the way to the coast... a headwind... ugh!)
caligurl, would you mind an inexperienced double metric rider tagging along? I figure it wouldn't hurt to be riding with someone who knows what he/she is doing on longer rides and who knows the course.

I'll be riding the double metric, I think they call it the "Century Challenge".
Nice ride, cook your legs right off the bat on Latigo and use what's left of them
to cover the last 115 miles. Nice leisurely Sunday. Ha!
Any plan for identifying marks for BF riders. Can't do red stars on number plates since LAW
doesn't issue them for their rides.

no.... it's not that bad.... it's a gorgeous ride! there are a couple of steep areas... but they are short... on one or two of the hairpins... you just "stand up" for those!

Didn't mean to scare anybody. I usually ride Latigo flat out as part of a loop I do fairly often.
It's 11 miles of nice varied terrain. My first time riding the GT Lite, I rode the Latigo part like I usually
do and that's just stupid when you've got over a hundred miles left to do.
For ID purposes I'll be in a plain orange jersey (it'll do until the BF jerseys happen) on a custom steel,
painted green and silver.

Cali,
I'm hurt  I was the third post in and you don't have me listed for the double metric. I will definitely be there. After doing the century for the last 2 years and doing the double metric at The Grand Tour, this route is a favorite. It looks like we have enough people to register for a discount. Have you registered yet?

ok ok ok!!!!!!!!! sorry! also realized it's on page 2 and fixed that! actually.... i didn't go back through this post... was taking the info from the other thread!
Are we thinking of doing a group registration? Or should I just go ahead and register?
We can register as a group online, so I see no reason not to do the group registration seeing as we'll almost certainly have more than 5 riders from BikeForums.

jschen,
I totally agree with Cali, this ride is not that difficult, Latigo is a nice climb, and the views are great. I can only imagine that since when I climbed it in June the lower 2/3 was in the clouds. The lifts to Baldy are much tougher.
This was the first double metric that I had ever done and at the end I felt like I could still ride another 30-40 miles. Maybe I might have to try some double centuries next year. Cali & Lance are you up for some double centuries next year.

Ohhh,... Party!
Ok, this one sounds fun. Is there a route guide anywhere? Anyone up for carpooling from San Diego? I can carry 3 bikes, 7 if I throw the roof rack on, but that's pushing it. :) If you know the route, could you post it on a site like routeslip (http://www.routeslip.com)? Thanks!
Mark, carpooling sounds great, but you sure you wouldn't mind waiting around for someone who might roll in an hour or two after you?
I really need to get around to registering for this ride. I keep putting it off.

I'm registered. Entered as a member of a group of 5. How shall we send the names of the people who are registered to go? I can send them if you guys want.
Looks like I'm gonna be real last minute on this one as we have so many family things coming up. I'm considering the metric but also hatching an idea about meeting up with the group out on PCH someplace and riding with you through the canyons. Then when you drop back to Westlake, I can cruise back to my house without having to burn the entire day.
Now, someone have a route sheet from last time so I can see where this is headed? What time will everyone be leaving the Malibu start point?
Hmmm for me to do this means I've got to CLIMB out of the Conejo, up Rock Store and down something. Sure not going to go over Malibu Canyon...maybe I should sleep in instead!

Route sheets? We don't need no steenkin route sheets. Actually, a profile of this thing would be cool, don't want to show up with the wrong bike. :) Oh, we doing the century, or metric double?

I don't have an official profile or anything but I can't think of any climb greater than 6%. There are two steep descents, but all gradual ascents.
