I live in Suncrest on Sunrise Dr. and have been here for about 5 years. Most of my summer riding is road and you have probably seen me out there riding. I ride through Tum Tum at least a few times a week usually in the early AM. We just don't get to many riders out here. In the winter/cold weather months I'll head out on the MB/cross to the state lands (while we still have them) or up to Stoney peak, Dunn's Mt and Saddle Mt above Tum Tum. Used to ride to Riverside from the house but 291 past big sandy is getting a little to harry for me.I probably have seen you (not many roadies out that way unless Baddlands is having a big ride). I'm up Cummings Canyon, in the shadow of both Stoney and Saddle; in fact that is where my son, the neighbor boys and myself all started out riding MTBs. Stoney is one of my favorite mid-winter masochist hike-a-bikes.

My summers are on the DH courses and doing the Wednesday Night trail rides out of Bicycle Butler. If you're ever inclined to get in more MTBing, the Wed Night Rides go most of the year but, of course, are more well-attended (upwards of 25+ riders).

Yep great climb and man what a view. I head up Whitmore Hill Rd and go through the gated community. Do you take the same route? I have ridden most of the dirt roads in the Tum Tum area but have not been up Cummings Canyon. Some times it's hard to tell if it's a dirt road or someones long private driveway. Don't want to tick anyone off. Any good routes out that way? I've also ridden above Red lake and it's also a pretty good long climb.
I work 12 hr shifts nights so it's hard for me to get to any of the group rides. Back in the day when we still had the Wild rockies/WIM series I rode and raced with 4 other guys but they all moved on to other things. So most of my rides are solo. I try to get out with my son once a week who is 19 and is turning into a pretty good rider.

My routes up have mostly been up out of my canyon or off the upper end of Scotts Valley Road in through the DNR access gate.

Cummings Canyon is a private drive really. I used to have it well marked as such until someone stole my blue sign and a logging crew beat up my other one. Oh well. I've been fortunate to have good relationships with my neighboring landowners so our access has been pretty open from our side. The way out of my valley is always a grueling climb but, yeah, the rewards are waiting at the top.

Mt. Godfrey (above Red Lake) is cool. I happen to be friends with the family that has that leased for grazing, so we've ridden there some too. I keep wanting to go on a longer ride all the way over the top to Axtel's some day.

It's great that you're riding with your son. Enjoy it now; all our 'neighborhood' boys grew up and left home and my son just got married a few weeks ago. We'll still ride as much as we can but it will be few and far between I know.

I'll PM you some contact info and maybe we can hook up for a ride sometime.

Speaking of which--are the roads any better than when I was last there about five years ago?

I think I would be SHOCKED actually :p . I remember some truly terrible roads...it's about time to get out there again (got to do some winter bird watching :) ), so I'll have to come take a look for myself.

Originally from the Northeast, I am now in Corvallis Oregon and am a regular bike commuter. I used to commute into Corvallis from Albany, but now that I am in town I realize that this is really the place to be if you like to get around by bike. What a great area.

I'm not sure where I am at, somedays. I live between Tri-Cities and Spokane. I took a new job in Spokane and spend about four days there and then come back to Tri. I am trying to get a second bike so I can ride in Spokane. If I don't hurry the first snow will fly before I get a ride in.

Don't be that bad! But, just remember that riding in the snow can be fun (as long as you're prepared for it :) ).

Just joined very recently and am glad to see a community of bikers thriving here. Am from S King County who took up cycling this summer. Subsequently lost 25 lbs (183 down to 158 at 5'10" and wiped off onset of hypertension). Will never turn my back on biking because of this. Now am superambitioning a one-day STP ride, hope am not biting off more than I can chew. I hope to get some help and guidance or even be part of a training group from among you gracious and lofty members in this community. Cheers!

Anyhow, looking forward to chatting with you all in the future.

The hard part is to figure out where to meet! It does sound as if there is starting to be quite a contingent of Soos Creek and vicinity folks, though.

Please note that I am quite slow, though :p .

Soos Creek would be a good starting point for us East Hillers/Covingtonians/etc.

I'm at the north end, but would be happy to start at the south end if that's more convenient for folks. BSC is not really a long ride, but it's a start :) .

I do have a favourite longer route, which is to start at BSC, down the East Hill into Renton, along Cedar River Trail into Maple Valley, and head back up to the East Hill on SE 240th.

Mornings are always good...if we use the CRT to MV back to East Hill route, starting around 8.00 am on a Sunday would be good. The CRT is a gradual climb along a nice, quiet MUP (not much used, especially towards the MV end), a little bit of mixing it up with fun traffic in MV where the route passes by Highway 18, and then some nice little rolling hills by Tahoma HS. The return trip is on a surface road, but the traffic is used to cyclists, and I've never had any problems riding along there. It generally takes about 2 and a half, three hours including any stops.

I can't make it this Sunday, but perhaps next week?

On the other hand, if anyone would like to simply have me act as a tour guide, send me a PM :) .

I have to agree. There are pockets where it's not great, and there are quite a few apartment complexes along 240th and also along Benson Highway (with the usual problems which crop up in any apartment complex), but the actual neighbourhoods are pretty quiet.

Last summer we had a series of home break-ins by a couple of teens (not our house but here on the island). They eventually caught them. They were hiding out in the forest on the south end.

My kid's bike was stolen right off our front lawn a few years ago. Now we lock everything in the garage...out of sight out of mind.
