We're doing our own version of this for a Labor Day vacation. I only started riding on the road this year and it'll be my first little tour -- we're staying a couple of days in Newport Beach. Holy crap I can't wait!

The original goal was to ride from home, but I ended up being the only one willing / ready / sufficiently trained to do it. So we're just starting at Green River. Look for the motley-est of crews and that's probably us. I might even ride with a beer. ( We're pretty far from OCP :) (I finally have a vague understanding of what that is now) ).

What's the route? Maybe I'll ride from here to Riverside & do the return with the group...of course that would make for an early morning.

the majority of it is on the santa ana trail... but if you start in riverside... last year we did some climbing around before getting on the trail...then back through the streets.... to the end/start point

I did this last year too....and caligurl is right, it was HOT!! And the lunch was so damn good that my friend had to call his wife to pick him up because he was too full to ride back! I'd love to finally meet some of you fine folks so maybe I'll sign up!

I belong to the club that is putting on this ride. I don't know all the details, but it will be starting at the Riverside Medical Clinic on Arlington Ave. That's about five miles further than last year. Maybe they'll cut out the climb in Corona to compensate.

The volunteers for the ride usually do a prelude ride a week or two before the event. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Got news tonight that there will be free Starbucks coffee at the start of the 100 mile ride. There will be either a booth set up in the Riverside Medical Clinic or across the street where the new Starbucks just opened.

I don't think the route is on the web site. It's changed a little from last year. The majority of it is on the Santa Ana River Trail (SART) from Green River to Huntington Beach. The start point is the Riverside Medical Clinic at the corner of Arlington and Brockton. Then it takes Victoria to Corona. After that, I'm not sure of the exact twists and turns to get you to the SART.

I did the RTS (Riverside to Surfside) prelude this morning. Well, I didn't do the whole ride. I rode from the Riverside Medical Clinic on Arling & Brockton and rode the route to the beginning of the Sant Ana River Trail at the Green River Golf Course. It's 22 moles to that point. I got a late start, so I did the ride solo.

The century route starts at the Riverside Medical Clinic. From there it turns left on Brockton Ave. Brockton turns into Mary St. Then you turn right on Victoria Ave. Victoria Ave. is one of the prettiest streets in Riverside. One lane (plus a bike lane) separated by palm trees. Only two traffic lights along the route. A few stop signs, though. The City of Riverside is supposed to sweep the bike lanes before the ride on Saturday. Just past La Sierra there's some construction and there are some steel plates that take up over half the right lane.

Then there's a right turn onto Fillmore. That thkes you to Indiana Ave. where you make a left turn. just past Pierce Ave. there's a 1/4 mile strech of rough road. Probably best to take the lane here. Continuing on Indiana, you pass an indian burrial ground on the left. Then you make a right on Mckinley, then a left turn on Magnolia. The good news is that the construction has been completed on the west-bound side of Magnolia. The bad newsis there's still a couple of rough spots on the east-bound side.

Continue on Magnolia (turns into 6th St.) and turn RIGHT on Rimpau. Last year you turned left on Rimpau and climbed up the hill. This year the hill climb has been eliminates. Take Rimpau until it ends and turn left on Quarry. Be careful going onto Quarry since theres som holes. Then you turn right on West Grand. Be careful crossing Main St. There's a couple of troughs where the wheel of cars have worn down the blacktop. It took me by surprise.

Then it's right onto Railroad St. The good news about Railroad St. is that it has been re-paved and is nice and smooth. the bad news is that the bike lane is one of those half blacktop half concrete rain gutter things. I recommend staying on the blacktop side. It's smooth sailing to the first rest stop at the Metrolink station.

After the rest stop you continue on Auto Centre Dr. and cross the 91 freeway. When you get to the 91, the right lane is right turn only and you ceed to get into the left lame. Then the road turns into Serfas Club Drive. Then it's a right onto Palisades. It's pretty much downhill and smooth except for a deep six-inch hole I saw about 1/4 mile from the turn. I just had a glance at it, but I couldn't see the bottom.

Then it's right onto Green River. Don't gee to close to the line, because there's a two-inch drop-off onto gravel. There are also some srorm drains with wide grates as you get closer to the 91. After the freeway, there's a couple of fast-food restaurants and gas stations. Watch for cars exiting the freeway and going into and out of the stores. After that it's smooth sailing (cycling) and very little traffic to the entrance to the SART.

Hope this helps.

Jim

p.s. I hope the weather next weekend is just like today: perfect.

true theres little traffic after the Green River stores and shops but there is a trailer park just at the bottom of a down hill around a semi blind curve. you can easily top 40 down that hill with minimal effort... however...one car coming out of that trailer park can ruin your whole day ! Just before getting to the SART there's another small downhill I almost bought it there one day with a disgruntled golfer who must have missed his tee time. Other than that it is like a very safe ride.

One thing that bothers me though...it could be C...o...l...d at the start. I think I'll hunt the goodwillbag for an old jacket or sweater and just trash it when it warms up a bit

Are you doing the ride Chuckie? I don't have to work Friday night so I should be able to get on the trail a lil earlier.

Wonder what time the riders will get on my usual on the trail? Maybe I'll get lucky and run into a few of the BF riders. Should be fun!:D

But then again, I always say I'm getting up early and never do! How far into the ride do the century riders hit the trail? 20, maybe?

Hey Isits, did the club do the prelude on Saturday? Gina and I rode for a bit with and around the club. I didn't think of it then. An older gentleman in a polka dot jersey, about 5 women and a few other guys? Was prolly your group, maybe you were with them at your turnaround point? The polka dot guy was kicking but for a while. I ran into them right before the Pond stop on the way back. We stopped with them for a bit at the waterstop too.Hmmm just wondering!...I was wearing a Tour de Palmprings t-shirt.:D

Dang! I wish the weather would make up it's mind! The weather report first says lots of rain then says scattered showers. I don't know what bike to mount the Brooks on. (haven't gotten one for the new bike yet.) If I have to carry a lot of stuff to cover all the contingencies (sp?), I'll put on one of my panniers on my touring bike and carry it there. Not doing the ride is not an option. In a way, I'm hoping for rain. I did the TOSRV in May and it rained both days. Had a blast anyway.
