It is definetley a problem. I just avoid McGalliard by starting at the parking lot right off of it so I don't have to cross it (I have many times when I went South towards the depot). I go North which is good for a 18 mile round trip. Most of the roads that intersect the Greenway at that point are low traffic.
That's what I do on an afternoon ride after work. I start at Gaston and ride to McGalliard and back. We are lucky to have this trail. Most MUP's are choked with pedestrians and busy intersections like the Monon.

Fortunately I almost never have to cross it. If I'm going north, I just pick up the trail off of Rosewood. If I'm going south, I'm riding on McGalliard to get to the trail. Riding on McGalliard is MUCH better than crossing it.
On a sad note, we lost a fellow cyclist today, where the Cardinal Greenway crosses U.S.35. The story is in the Star Press.

group105 tipped me off on this sad news. I'm still trying to figure out what happened. You have a clear line of sight both ways on Highway 28. What a tragedy.

Where do you ride in Monticello. I frequent that area often. If I had to guess I'd say springburro (sp) rd.

Ha! Angola. I've worked with a lot of Tri-state grads. Nice campus. We used to run a large golf outing every year out at Zoellner (sp). Well they still do, but I no longer work with them. Too bad....we could have hooked up for a ride or two if I was still heading that way.

Native Hoosier here, born in Greene County (currently here) but going to be residing in Bloomington the next 3 years for school. I will be a sophomore at IU and I wasn't into cycling last school year, but I can't wait to hit the hills this year!

There's a nice pathway/trail network up in Indy and Carmel.
Brown County (Bloomington) has some great mountainbiking.
Don't forget about the NITERIDE up in Indy tonight either!:D

Thanks for the tips. I've done Brown County and definitely loved that. Around here, the road riding consists nearly entirely of farm roads in disrepair, so that's been a bit disappointing. How was the Niteride?

I passed a guy on a niiice Raleigh bike this morning on my way to work, I was going to say hey and nice bike but he turned at the intersection I was coming up on before I got to it. If there is a Greene Countian among you guys, reveal yourself ;)
Indy here, near the Pyramids.
I ride an 8-9 mile loop around the neighborhoods and some at Eagle Creek.
I want to try the Monon Trail and fight with the Peds sometime.
Edited: Been riding a 12 mile loop from the house SE to Broad Ripple and catching the Monon Trail north to 86th, thence back home. The Monon is good in the morning, but congested at night. Between the peds walking 3 and 4 abreast and the roadies breaking the speed limit it's a little hectic.

Surely you jest...I live here and train on Putnam Co. roads every day. They are among the WORST I have ever seen, and I've lived in many places! You must've only ridden between Greencastle and Fillmore while you were a student at DePauw...the Putnam Co. Highway Department's approach to road repair is "throw some gravel on it, it'll be OK for the cow trailers!"

I'm in Culver for another two weeks, but after that, I'll be moving to Spencer...
Look for me commuting to White River Valley HS on a white Univega, or beating around on a Uo-8 or Raleigh Professional.

Marion/Gas City in Grant county Indiana here… I live about a mile from the center of the North branch of the Cardinal Greenway. It’s just a rotten shame that some of the local land owners South of Jonesboro got greedy and blocked the Greenway from joining up with the Gaston branch. But, I still like our eight miles and growing trail… :)
