It's not like we need another ride to choose from in the next couple months :p , but I thought I'd mention it. Same group that puts on the famous Solvang Cenutry has a metric century in Solvang on November 4th. I think I'm going to dust off the tandem and get my wife out for this one:D . I mentioned it to her when the flyer came in the mail, and she thought I was crazy, she's barely done any riding since we had kids 5 year ago. I think I sold her on it though, or maybe it's the idea of a weekend without the kids;) ? Ayone else thinking of doing this? Normally I wouldn't make the drive for a 65 mile ride, but a weekend away sounds great:D

This is a great ride with great scenery! I did this ride like 10 years ago, but back then it was only a 50 miler. We got a room in Buellton the night before and rode in to Solvang for the ride. Definitely a great way to spend the weekend...:)

We did the 50 miler (or maybe the metric? it's hard to remember) about 5 or 6 years ago. We usually stay in Lompoc. Foxen canyon is great, and I think it may have been repaved this year:)

Does anyone know if there are any profile maps of the routes? On the website they just rate the routes in difficulty but I'd like to see how much climbing there is for each.

Unfortunately not, still very rough. That is my saturday ride. I will be doing the prelude and hoping this year the weather will be better for the century.
As for maps they don't hav eit yet ready. That's what I was told...
Any local riders, interested in riding on weekends foxen canyon????

Well ... it certainly couldn't get any worse than this year's Solvang century!

My friend just fininshed his first century ride, the Amtrak Century. Now he's got the bug to do more rides. Since the Solvang Prelude flyer was on our windshield after the ride, that's the one he wants to do.

He's a little concerned about doing the metric century, because it is rated as difficult. For those who have ridden these rides, how would you compare the half-century and metric century Solvang Prelude rides with either the Amtrak Century or Rosarito to Ensenada?

I did the 50 mile route 3 years ago. The temperature at the start was literally about 30 degrees and it rained like crazy the night before.

The route was more hilly than I thought it was be. I had just started riding again so I literally signed up with my buddy a week before and rode it. It's probably not as bad as I thought it was because I wasnt in shape. Still, it was a great ride and very scenic!

This was my first organized ride some 15 years ago. We did the "50 miler" which was 58 miles, plus rode 2 miles from an RV park to the start and 2 miles back! Now that I'm riding again, I plan on going up there, maybe with my uncle-in-law. Maybe people on this thread can designate a meeting time/place for the start, maybe even a preferred hotel (Buellton is fine with me).

I usually ride this every year as it's short and sweet and you can wine taste afterwards. If a group assembles, I'll definitely ride it. :D

I did the 50 mile in March. 40 degrees of rain and hail within 5 minutes of setting off. 65-70 and sunny and the end.

I'll be there, I've ridden it the last 4 years straight. This was the first organized ride I did when I started cycling. I thought it was tough, I actually had to walk up a couple of hills. Now it is a piece of cake and great fun.

I'm sooooo jealous...if only I could have afforded the Madone. I'll be glaring at you the first time I meet you - please don't take it personally. It's just the "green eyed monster" poking his head out! :D

Couple hours? I mapquested it, it said it was like 4 hours, is that not true?

4 hours sounds about right. Took my 6 hours to drive to San Jose from San Fernando Valley, and Solvang is about 2.5 for me.

Should I make this a goal since I have been off the bike for almost 2 weeks with an injury? Work back up to 50 mile rides by then? Hoping to get the bike repaired by Tues, and the shoulder is sore but I can still support myself on the handlebars.

You are so funny! As IF I could keep up w/you two monsterettes! (like my new word?) However, it will be really great to see you both!

I still haven't told DH so there is a remote possibility that I'll have to cancel at the last minute, but hopefully not! I've got 5 rides in a row though starting 10/15 so he's gonna be on the grumpy side about then  Guess I'd better be really tolerant of the golf stuff huh? ;)

I can't wait to see your new bike! I'm so happy for you! You know, it was inevitable ... as soon as you got hooked on the road stuff ya know ;)

I'm seriously considering this one now. I met a guy today who was riding his first century (strong rider and very nice). He was talking about it. I also met Scootcore (Bill) and his friend (yippee - I met more BFers!) who expressed some interest (as well as a couple of my biking buddies). Small world, but it turns out Scootcore knows the "first century" guy. It always amazes me - the whole "six degrees of separation" thing!

just an fyi... since the description called the metric challenging, I e-mailed them and asked for elevation info...

3000+/- on the metric with no hills exceeding 800 feet in gain..

just in case you're interested ;)

Yeah, I did that route when I was 12 and at the time had not done any ride over 30 miles. There are some climbs, but they're short and sweet, and the scenery and the crowd keep your mind off the distance.

;) based on what most of the SoCal peeps do on a regular basis, this ride is flat

I'll let DH know that I will be in grave danger if I have to cancel!.... Nah... you can tell him! ;)

Actually, I'm gonna talk to him about the 5 weeks worth of rides I've got lined up  and see if I can offset them somehow (minds outa the gutter please... of course, yes, that'll probably be involved as well! ;) ) with some golf trade off.... I'll be planning my attack while I'm traveling this week!

Oh, and Injured... you'd better be there the night before if you want to actually see me... cause other than the 1/2 second you'll see the back of me as you zoom by, that'll be it! ;)

I just checked that thread. Sorry. I may do the BF ride or Solvang. My thought is that I'm going to be riding with all of you the following weekend - so, if you decide you can't stand me on the 4th, it will be a very lonely campsite on the 10th for me. :p Seriously, (insert whine and sad-sack face) I love the Solvang Prelude. It is such a gorgeous ride! It also cost $$ too...hmmm. Maybe I will crash the BF Riverside ride - Ugh! Decisions, decisions... :D
