I am new to biking and trying to figure out if I need a better bike or it is just lack of training.

I did two tests:

1. Carmichael's 2 x 3Mile indoors. I have power output from the trainer(CycleOps Electronics).

Time 8:25 7:34
HR 163 162
Power 225 222
Speed 21.4 23.8

2. Same test outdoors (no power)

Time 9:12 9:30
HR 167 164
Power - -
Speed 19.2 19.0

I ride Trek 7.5 FX hybrid. This is the only bike I have so far.

So, basically, 220W of LT power gives me only 19 MP/H.

On a short triathlon I only average 18.7 MP/h and everybody passes me. It seems that the main pack averages 20-22 Mp/h.

I am thinking what would be my speed on an entry level triathlon bike?
I really would like to have a sence of it before starting throwing money into a new bike.

How much power do I need to average 20 mp/h on 40k time trial?

Just to give you an idea when I am on flat land turning doing around 220w I am doing in the area of 21 - 22 mph. I weigh approximately 172 pounds. The difference in efficiency of a road bike and a hybrid are amazing. Oh, my numbers are from a road bike in the drops, not on a tri-bike. That would be even more efficient.

Do you need a new bike? That is up to you and your goals.

Even a change to skinnier tires can make a huge change. Are you riding on cross tires?
