You Tuesday night Garden riders, what type paces and distances does this ride have? It is hard for me to make it in time for the Tuesday night worlds due to work but 6 shouldn't be a problem. I usually just ride alone if I can't make the worlds but wouldn't mind a change of pace. TIA!

bbattle, I "may" be doing the Hot 100...

Usually have a small lead group that is a B- world's pace. goes about 25mi. other groups go from 1-2mph slower to those that social ride for ice cream. In recent weeks we've had a handful of riders that I used to see on the Homewood B ride come and join us.

I rode with the B's, as far as I could! :o I will be there tonight!

Well I did the BG ride tonight it was a pretty good time, I only say pretty good cause it is so HOT. I was on my Roubaix with the Greatful Dead KOM jersey. I tried to get in with the lead group but they took off as someone, ride leader?, was asking if there were any first timers, as I raised my hand and he started explaining the groups the first group was taking off. Myself and some others tried catching up but we seemed to get caught by every light till there was some sort of regroup at 78? From there I maintained a good pace and rode in some pacelines with different groups on the way in. I also decided I won't ride down Lakeshore again. There were about 5 of us that took that route in and we got buzzed more times than I care for! Overall it was a GREAT ride, 27 miles at a good pace and it's easy to make a 6 o'clock start. Look forward to more of these and wish I had came out before.

I am new to cycling and live in the bham area (Helena). Where are good places to ride, I pull a baby trailer so I can't ride in traffic. Are there any paved bike trails or bike paths that aren't in traffic?

Good to see you at BamaCross #1. Are you going to Muny Sokol? I should be there to race/ride on the

Welcome to BF, MPR. Haven't seen any Baldwin Co's on here either. Any possibility you've run into my old pal Rick Hudson on the road down there? Not sure if he's had much time to ride as he's been involved in his children's swimming.

Bob, to be honest with you I have not ran into anyone. I've probably seen only a handful of riders down here in years. The funny thing is there is some great riding with huge bike lanes.

Also, I was even thinking that the state park would be a great place for a crit race.

Hold that thought. The AL racing group has broken away from GA (formerly ALGABRA) to form the ACA ( AL Cycling Assoc) and we need to start holding more events. No web site yet, but I do know that one of the head honchos is located in the Mobile area. My man here would know his contact info if you'd like to feed him the idea.

Here are a couple of new links for the Bama peeps. Alabama Cycling Association, which is the new race group for Alabama, http://www.alcycling.org/index.html . Also Alabama Cycling News, which is a overall cycling focused site with a bit of everything, http://www.alabamacyclingnews.com/ . Hope to see you all on the roads this year.

MPR, we are going to be doing a "training camp" down in Baldwin later this month. Think we are staying out on Ft Morgan road somewhere?

I'm not sure if you're talking to me or not so I'm going to address your question as if you were.

There is about 30 miles (each way) of beach road that has a bike lane about the width of a car lane. There is a two lane road with a dedicated bike lane that goes to Ft. Morgan. That is about 24 miles each way. And finally there is a state park, which has a dedicated bike lane and light traffic that's a 6 mile loop.

Bob's Bike Shop in Birmingham. Don't know B-ham but it was right down the street (31?) from Sanford University. I met Mike and a second person (I'm sorry I forgot his name-J?) Both were great people and a pleasure to talk to. I don't get up to B-ham at all and yet they took the time to talk with me. These guys and this shop seemed top rate.

There are actually two Bob's, both on 31. One is in Vestavia and one in Homewood, which is basically on each side of Samford. There is also a Mike at both shops, Miller at the Homewood shop and Hurley the one in Vestavia. Bob's is a good place and they have some good people working for them. There are a couple of other shops that are great as well here in B'ham.

This is a valid concern, not only in AL but several other states in the southeast (FL panhandle is the exception, very good shoulders on many roads). Most roads in Alabama have no paved shoulder at all. Just a white line and a drop off. I lived in Auburn, AL area for several years. I rode side streets around Auburn / Opelika without many problems (errand and commute trips) and went for longer rides out of town on rural county roads with little traffic. A lot of my riding was on unpaved Lee county roads ("red dirt roads") on a heavy duty road bike equipped with 700x38 tires and fenders. I've also ridden thousands of miles of backroads in Talladega Natl Forest east of Anniston and the east central AL area, north of I 85 and south of I 20. Endless backroads through the hills of Randolph and Clayton counties and almost no cars.

Many parts of Alabama outside the few major cities are loaded with rural county roads with very few cars, which can be fairly manageable for bicycles to use. You just need to avoid the main roads between any two populated areas, those can be a real hazard. Get one of those DeLorme road atlas books that have all the detailed back roads and do some exploring. You would be surprised at what is out there, I was.

Hi guys, I'm a new rider from Birmingham. I live near St. Vincent's Hospital. My friends and I just started riding again after years of sitting around playing video games and going to school. If anyone wants to get together and ride, we are always up for it. (You might want to wait a month or two for us to get back into riding so you aren't disappointed :( ) I'm glad to see there are so many riders from around here!

tkeon, be sure to check out the rides on http://www.bhambikeclub.org/.

These are mostly recreational level club rides, with some B/C riders slumming in at times. The A's generally ride other rides that we know about and can steer you to if you get tired of pulling :).

The Tour de Blue was also rolling...Matter of fact several of the TdC riders hit the rest stop I was working for the TdB, at the junction of 25/78. I have never seen such looks of disappointment when some realized they were at the wrong stop. We didn't turn anyone away but did point out they were at the wrong stop. Both were for great causes and could have raised MUCH more for each group if not on the same day...

spoke50 it actually isn't my forum. I either found out about it through d'dog's email list or through the Alabama Cycling News website? I wouldn't think Jamie would have any problem with it being linkied through anything locally though. I agree it could use a LOT more traffic to keep it afloat though...

Hey guys, Eddie Jones from Gardendale AL.....I have modded and Supermodded on mtb sites all over the net and I think I have found a really good site here. Any questions about where to ride in my neck of the woods just ask. If you want to ride, just ask as I am always ready to ride. Mostly mountain but with the addition of a Surly CrossCheck, I guess I am good for some road riding as well. I am a super clyde at about 260lbs and I am a little old so take it easy

I know most of the guys at BUMP from mtbr. I just recently got a CrossCheck so I won't totally be an mtb guy. I am already liking this site alot. It appears to be really cycling oriented in all of it's incarnations so I should fit in fine. I already know some of the names here so that makes me feel at home as well:D
