Hi all. I posted once a day or two ago to post pictures of my shiny new bike, but spotted the introductions forum and thought I'd add mine to the pile.

My name's Summer ("Hi Summer") and I'm from Alaska. I haven't ridden a bike in quite a while until this last week or so. I forgot how much fun it was! Haven't braved the roads or trails or anything yet; I'm a scaredycat who's kind of waiting to get Effective Cycling and The Art of Urban Cycling on interlibrary loan before I really tackle it.

I don't drive, and live just far enough away from everything to make walking not quite appealing, especially in the crappy weather - uh. I mean, beautiful natural surroundings that Alaska has in abundance. So biking seems like a good possible solution. :) Plus there's a part of me that always secretly wanted to be that girl who was really good at something mechanical, and bicycles seem straightforward enough that I'm not too badly intimidated. Mostly, though, I just want to be able to get to the grocery store, the theater, run errands, things like that, without constantly having to depend on someone for a ride. Viva la independence!

Anyway, hello to all. :) Any other Alaskans around?

And, because I like 'em: My bikes! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/92099034@N00/sets/72157594186894365/)

Effective Cycling is a great book. If you get a chance to take an Effective Cycling (Bike Ed) course (http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/education/), it is well worth the time and money.

I was looking at that before, but it doesn't look as though there are any in Alaska. Bummer, because I'd really like something like that.
