For those of us who have a significant other / stoker, check out this 1955 Good Housekeeping piece and the pic that went with it.

Where did things go wrong?

My wife and excellent stoker brought this home the other day as an example of how silly things used to be – what a hoot!

I checked it over and made the comment that it looked really good to me and that it was a shame that things today are so upside down. I would merely add some bullet points to cover the art of tandem stoking, like:

Be refreshed and ready to ride when the Captain is ready.
Have all riding clothing clean, in good repair, smelling good, and ready to go at all times.
Be sure to provide iced and refreshing drinks in the water bottles.
Provide interesting and delicious sandwiches, snacks, and fruits in the bike bag for proper nourishment during the ride.
Go to the ATM to ensure that we have the proper amount of cash along with our onboard identification.
Always defer to points 16 and 17 above during the ride.
Carefully wash down and wipe the bike upon return – for the Captain’s inspection prior to putting the machine away.

It’s taken me 4 days to put out the flames. Where did things go wrong?
