Other training
The long ride is half of your weekly training - what do you do for the rest of the time? If you're building your base, increasing your endurance and trying to get comfortable on the bike, then just ride. You need to ride at least four days a week to get fitter, so try hard to fit in the rides. I believe the best way to get in regular rides is commuting. You might take a short route on the way to work so you don't work up a sweat and then take a longer route home.

Pete Penseyres

Pete Penseyres won the Race Across America twice (1984 and 1986), holds the RAAM men's average speed record of 15.40 mph (1986), with Lon Haldeman holds the tandem transcontinental record (1987, 7d 14h 55m), was a member of Team Lightning that won HPV RAAM (1989, 5d 1h 8m), was a member of Team Bicycling which set the 50+ RAAM record (1996, 5d 11h 21m) and is a national champion road racer.

word....

this summer i rode from philly to p-burgh in 3 days (190-100-100).

next summer i hope to do at least 1 (maybe more) 100 mile organized mountainbike rides. http://www.mtntouring.com/mountain/htm/wilderness_101/w101_body.htm

the only training i get (other than the very occasional long weekend ride) is commuting. riding 25-30 miles everyday makes you strong. this winter to up the training i plan to ride fixed-gear this winter as much as possible to get even stronger (and i will run occasionally and do my newest routine involving 50 situps a day)...

Yeah, commuting does amazing things for you. We have fincas in Costa Rica which in some areas are pretty hilly - used to I had to pace myself walking the fincas - now, not an issue - in fact, feel like running to get a workout.

It is the regular thing that does it.

listen...i'm a newbie still on some of this stuff. I bike to/from work 3 days per week (10 miles r/t). I've gotten myself roped into a charity 35-mile ride in 3 weeks. OY VEY! HOW DO I PREPARE???

JerseyBoy, you prepare by making some longer trips. Take a 10-mile ride home from work, or a 15-mile ride this weekend.

35 miles isn't that long if you're already doing 5x2 miles a day. You'll just need to take lots of breaks. :D
