Hey - I'm new to Southern Cali, and the weather rocks! Mtn biking 4 seasons of the year!!
As much as I love climbing the mountains in the Santa Monicas, the sun and the lack of cover make for an occasionally tough riding experience. Plus, I like greenery! If anyone knows of any good rides in the LA area or nearby 2-3hrs, let's hear the details - how to get there, any permits needed, and how long the ride is!
Ride on!
try the mountains by pasadena. though i've never been there, but i'm gonna go check it out next week. if you send me your email, i'll send you some pix when i do go there.

+1 for the Pasadena mountains, or the entire foothills of the San Gabriel Valley for that matter.
A good trail I usually do since it's close by to where I live is the one right by JPL -
Take the 210 to the Arroyo / Windsor exit
Make a right off the exit
Proceed about 1 mile, parking area to your left
Trail begins directly in front of the road - you won't miss it
Around 1.1 miles of flats before you get climbing - you can go all the way around, or turn around at various points.
Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear for some great single track in the woods.
