Does anyone know when the South path of the George Washington Bridge is due to reopen?

it can't be soon enough. holy crap are those stairs annoying.

for those of you who don't know what a pain this is, here are the steps to "ride" your bike across the bridge going from NYC to New Jersey:

carry bike up stairs ---> walk or ride about 100 feet --> go down stairs --> walk 15 feet --> go up stairs --> ride to the other end of the bridge --> go up stairs --> walk 25 feet --> walk down stairs --> walk about 30 feet --> go down final stairs to street level.

Let me know when its open. Those stairs are hell on my back. I'll drive my bike across rather than deal with the stairs.

Its not dangerous. Just ride slowly and yeild to pedestrians. It would be dangerous and illegal to ride on the bridge roadway. I hope the south walkway reopens soon.

Not as of yesterday. I'm really getting tired of it!

I saw two jerks hop the barricade and ride across the highway on both NJ and NY sides against traffic before sunrise.

I have heard rumors of a 12 October re-opening. Confirm or deny?

I remember the city spending a million plus for those stupid rails to roll your bike up on. LOL
I feel for ya, I could make a guess at the number of bridge crossings I have done having lived
in Jersey City and commuting to 1285 6th Ave. Has to be in the thousands.

Seems like any time I even think about going to New Jersey they shut down the south walkway!!

Ouch!! Hope you didn't get hurt!

I don't know what it is... I live in a third floor walk-up and carry my bike up and down the stairs every time I ride.... but something about those open grate stairs makes me really acrophobic.

They're really slick! Not too hurt - but did turn the "I'll go to Piermont" trip into "I guess I'll ride a mile along river road and call it a day".

Also for a heads up, memorial ride this Sunday. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=491322)

I drove across the bridge on Monday the 24th and I just happened to notice that the north side was locked. I didn't know that they kept it closed.

I drove across the bridge again on Monday the 1st and I saw people walking on the north side, so I had a hunch that they'd closed the south side. I wasn't paying attention on the way back so I didn't check closely. I guess my hunch was correct.

At least they didn't close it in the spring or summer.

The stairs on the north side of the bridge are really annoying, and I'm glad I my training ride up 9W instead of commuting to work (I live in NJ and work in NY) because going up and down those stairs takes a long time when you're wearing cleats.

please tell me the south side walk way is open again!

i can barely persuade myself to ride to begin with. now i have to freeze in the slow city traffic from brooklyn to the bridge and then i have to do the slippery stairs of the GWB? i'd rather stay home and put on a few pounds.

any time line on this issue?

If that isn't bad enough there's also a Greenway detour in effect (http://www.streetsblog.org/2008/12/05/uptown-hudson-river-greenway-detour-in-effect/) till the end of December due to construction around the east tower of the GWB. Cyclists are asked to exit the Greenway at 158th or via the path that leads to 172nd (if they're adventurous)

i braved the cold today. the south walkway of the GWB was open again. i noticed the sign for the detour but the bike way was open.

no more excuses. well, there is snow in the forecast for tomorrow to go along with 20mph winds and temperatures in the mid 20s.

Well just in case anyone was even thinking of going to New Jersey, according to the New York Cycle Club website -- "GWB South Sidewalk Closed. North Sidewalk open daily from 6 am until 12 midnight. South Sidewalk reopens Sat 20 Dec at 6 am."
